Health Insurance Suggestions ?

Featured Replies

I would like recommendations for Health Insurance companies.

Looking for proper insurance at the most reasonable cost. How do the Thai companies compare with foreign insurance?

Do any provide real cover or is it full of more holes than Swiss cheese?

Thanks to all for your comments.

It is certainly something to consider when taking out health insurance, because I'm now 77 and when I reached that age, the premium shot up quite markedly, so I had to have a look at my cover which was only for 1 million baht, and I weighed up the odds.

I got hold of my agent and suggested that I would pay the annual fee if they would drop it to consider me paying a 50,000 baht deductible of the costs incurred, and they agreed, so my annual premium stayed at 150,000 baht, which is just about on the tipping point as far as I'm concerned, and after that I may well consider scrapping it!

It's the exclusions as well so you pay a high premium not including conditions you will most likely need to claim on

Give AA Insurance Brokers a call, they will find you a suitable insurer as they did me back in the days.

The above said, personally I would steer clear of Thai health insurers as the laws from my understanding are flimsy, that said, I self insure now because when I started out, I was paying 70k baht and within 3 years it went to 140k + with me having not make a single claim.

AA Insurance found me an insurer who took on my pre-exiting condition for extra baht (optional), then one day they changed their underwriters and it went up, but not before going up every year, from 70k baht to 90k baht, then 110k baht, then 140k + baht and of course the insurance was for inpatient only, e.g. emergency treatment.

In the years that I have not been insured, I have saved about 1 million baht in premiums with the cancellation of my families cover as well, so in the event of hospitalizes, I have a mil, then the balance is on me.

Personally, I've been happy with them, although I signed up via a broker.  Of course, I haven't had to make a claim yet!  They were very responsive when I asked them to clearly show the medication I take for mild hypertension and slightly raised cholesterol, and their assurance that I would be covered for related illnesses.

How long have you been with them and how has the premium progressed during that time?

Point taken but.... Have you seen what Thai hospitals are charging now? Not to mention some charging Farangs double.

I was quoted 40000baht plus a month Plus any existing pre-conditions would be looked at cost wise

Looking at the cost per year I was 74 years old at the time

I decided  to pay cash

My first  kidney stone  operation was 165000 baht 3 day stay in a International hospital

Plus follow up was 60000baht

Still cheaper than having insurance cover

"""...Have you seen what Thai hospitals are charging now? Not to mention some charging Farangs double..."""

Here is a hint: REGISTER at a THAI MILITARY HOSPITAL.  You will pay the same as Thai civilians, at least in the KORAT ARMY HOSPITAL.

Registration is no cost to get a hospital ID Card. Many doctors are US or UK trained and speak English.

( 6 days, ER service, 4 days x-rays, 6 days meds, 6 days labs, 2 Doctor visits daily in 6 person ward, 3 months meds on discharge was  under $1000USD. )

Yes, and the rates are not rising ! (Unless you'll have claim. And even then a surplus is to be paid only for a short time!)

I have excess of 40,000 baht, and I am 62 years old.

Yes but you can shop around plus have the choice to go to cheaper countries for treatment, Vietnam, Malaysia, India etc

This will be year 3.  No, one of their selling points is that premiums are fixed unless you make a claim.

Thanks, that's good to know 🤗

I have Allianz Ayudhya which was Aetna before that and I think it was BUPA when I first signed up with them 24 years ago. They do not cover pre existing but they are a very good Thai insurance that has always paid my hospital bill and unfortunately I have had to use them quite often. I would receive a 10% discount for any year I didn’t have to use them and if I had claims over 1,000,000 baht for the year they would increase it by 10%. Definitely worth looking into when comparing others. Thai insurance is always cheaper than international coverage but just do the homework you’re doing. Best of luck

But do they know what they are doing? I have often thought that the Thais should not be let loose on something as complex as medicine and the other countries you mention are likely worse. I hear Singapore General Hospital is good.... but the cost?

Do some research, I'd expect Malaysia to be good, English far better than here, India full of English speaking doctors, countries like UK often take them on

Am finding that cover is full of holes like Swiss cheese.

Specific diseases are not covered.
There is a 1 year moratorium on some conditions before cover commences. So you have to pay for your first year and these items are not covered.

Last December I had an accident where a car ran over me. The driver's insurance company representative came to Bumrungrad Hospital and told me the driver's insurance covered me. Now, months later, comes a bill from Bumrungrad, whose cashier originally accepted the insurance.

I am also with Allianz Ayudhya and when I originally signed up it was Aetna/Bupa and because I took out the policy prior to the age of 60, I am covered up until the age of 100, believe it or not!

Of course by the time I get anywhere close to that, the premiums will have gone up so much that it won't be worth having, especially as I'm only covered for 1 million baht and inpatient only. As I mentioned in a previous post, I will reconsider my position in a couple of years or so, depending upon the premium cost.

I have to say that the service from them has been excellent to date, so I'm reluctant to change providers, but then again I have probably got too many pre-existing conditions to even be considered!

The premium is fixed.

In case you got a claim it's going up for a certain time only
