Woman Dies After Rice Field Blaze in Udon Thani

An incident unfolded in the village of Kut Kha, Thung Fon District, Udon Thani Province, where a 59-year-old woman, known locally as “Pa Joy”, died after being engulfed in flames while attempting to extinguish a fire that broke out in a rice field. The blaze occurred around midday on 13 April, at the rear of the village near Nong Borm. The victim, Mrs. Saiyon, sustained fatal burns despite efforts from her husband and family to save her. She was rushed to Thung Fon Hospital but succumbed to her injuries before arrival. A visit to the site of the fire revealed scorched land spanning approximately one rai, along with charred remains of the victim’s clothing, a hat with burnt strands of hair, and a pair of boots left in the ashes. The cause of the fire remains unknown. Ms. Buanoi, a 49-year-old farmer who discovered the aftermath, explained she had been out feeding her cattle when she heard cries from the field owned by the victim’s husband. Upon arrival, she saw the husband, Mr. Luechai, and relatives desperately lifting the burnt body of his wife into a vehicle. According to Ms. Buanoi, the fire may have started naturally or from human negligence. She believed Pa Joy was attempting to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby rubber plantations when strong winds caused the flames to overwhelm her. Mr. Luechai recalled that on the day of the fire, his wife had woken early to boil corn for sale. He had gone to plough the fields and later received a call from her asking for help extinguishing a fire. When he arrived, he and other family members attempted to contain the blaze but found her collapsed amidst the flames. Choking back tears, he said they had been married for 32 years and shared a deep bond. He emphasised his belief that the fire was a tragic accident. Mr. Luechai also urged villagers to adhere to provincial regulations banning the burning of rice stubble. “Unauthorised burning can cause serious danger and loss,” he said. “Let my wife’s death be a reminder of the risks.” Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, with early indications pointing towards accidental causes, though the precise origin of the fire remains unclear. -- 2025-04-15 -

Two Women Severely Injured After Violent Dispute in Samut Prakan

Two women, one with a mental illness and the other physically disabled, were left seriously injured after a violent altercation involving a kitchen cleaver, broke out between them at a housing estate in Samut Prakan. The incident occurred around 20:00 on 13 April, at a residence within the Fuangfah 15 Phase 1 housing estate in Phraeksa Mai, Mueang District. Local police and rescue workers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation rushed to the scene following reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found two injured women. One of the victims, 54-year-old Ms. Nuyuang Santhalunai, was lying face down in front of a local grocery shop, suffering from approximately ten severe slash wounds to her head. Nearby, another woman, identified only as “Noi”, aged around 45 and reportedly suffering from a mental condition, was seated beneath a tree with a deep facial wound. Rescue workers provided immediate first aid before transferring both women to Paolo Samut Prakan Hospital. Due to congestion in the narrow alleyways, they were moved to a nearby location for ambulance pickup. CCTV footage from the grocery store showed Ms. Nuyuang staggering into the shop, covered in blood, seeking help. The shopkeeper promptly called the authorities. Shortly after, the victim’s distressed relatives arrived at the scene, visibly shaken, with some reportedly on the verge of fainting. Inside the shared home where the altercation took place, police discovered a trail of blood and recovered two blood-stained weapons—a fruit paring knife and a meat cleaver, the latter with strands of hair attached. Both items were collected as evidence. The victim’s daughter, tearfully recounting the incident, stated that her mother and the other woman usually bickered but had never fought to this extreme. “They live together and often joke or push each other, but nothing like this has ever happened before,” she said. A volunteer from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation described the scene as particularly disturbing. “When we arrived, the older woman was unresponsive, lying in a pool of blood. Her head had multiple gaping wounds, she was in a critical state,” he reported. Mr. Wichian, 62, owner of the grocery shop, said he had earlier seen the two women playing with water, presumably part of Songkran celebrations. Moments later, one came running for help claiming she had been attacked. “They’re relatives, living in the same house. One was drunk, the other is mentally unstable. It’s the first time something like this has happened,” he added. Neighbour Ms. Joy, 56, told reporters she often heard the pair argue but never imagined it would escalate to violence. “They always bicker, especially because the mentally unstable woman often steals things. But today something triggered them and it turned serious. The older woman was also drunk at the time,” she said. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are expected to assess whether charges can be filed, given the mental health status of the alleged attacker. Resort Found Illegally Built on Protected Land in Kaeng Krachan National Park

Authorities have launched legal proceedings after uncovering a large-scale illegal development involving a hotel and several resort-style buildings on state land and within the boundaries of Kaeng Krachan National Park, Phetchaburi. Mr. Mongkhon Chaiphakdee, chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park, revealed that on 13 April, a joint task force including national park officials, representatives from the Royal Irrigation Department, and local administrative officers from Kaeng Krachan District conducted an inspection at Moo 8, Ban Tha Ruea, in Kaeng Krachan subdistrict. The inspection followed a public complaint received on 10 April regarding unlawful construction activities in the area. The team found that over five rai of land, including state-owned property and designated national park territory, had been encroached upon. The area lies within the protected irrigation zone of the Kaeng Krachan Dam. The development, allegedly spearheaded by a woman identified only as Mrs. Kanyapa, consists of a hotel, office buildings, swimming pool, rowhouses, and several villas. Some structures were already operational, while others were still under construction. “This is a clear and serious violation of multiple laws,” said Mr. Mongkhon. “The case involves illegal encroachment on state and national park land, as well as the unauthorised operation of a hotel business. Legal action is being taken under the Royal Irrigation Act of 1942, the National Parks Act of 2019, and the Hotel Act of 2004, all of which carry penalties including imprisonment and substantial fines.” Authorities have compiled evidence and forwarded the case to police investigators at Kaeng Krachan Provincial Police Station. As of now, Mrs. Kanyapa has not presented herself for questioning. The investigation is ongoing, and park officials have stressed that enforcement will proceed in full accordance with the law. -- 2025-04-15
