My Wise came thro in seconds this week.

And your point is? My Wise normally also come through in seconds, today they are not.

One of the senders was also not able to use debit or credit card, and had to make the payment by bank transfer.

Both payments the tracking shows Wise received the money yesterday

I was due to receive 2 small payment through Wise, and although they were initiated yesterday, the tracking said they would be in my account by 9.30am today.

At 10am this morning that message had disappeared from the tracking, and it was now said 12.00pm

Since there was still no payment i checked again, and both trackings now show.

We're a bit delayed — here are some possible reasons:

  • It's taking us longer to convert your money
  • Our banking partner might be experiencing downtime

Time to look for another company I assume, as there are too many similar reports recently.

You can contact Wise, either by chat or email, or phone and ask, on the app.

Same here.  Send THB yesterday, said it would be paid today, 09.55.  Came and went, now said 12:00.  Now no time given, nor any reason.  Yesterday there was some message/excuse on there blaming the earthquake.  They just BS whatever suits them.  Awful, but normally useful, people.

I only transfer money internationally to Thailand once a year. Do you think it's worth using Wise? The rate I got from my sending bank last year seemed quite good and no big extra charges there or here.  I also don't like the idea of giving money to Wise to sit on...

Is Wise only worthwhile if you need to make multiple transfers (e.g. like monthly or more frequently)?

The only time I looked at Wise for an annual international transfer a few years ago, I actually got more in to my Thai account just using my offshore bank than I was quoted from Wise. Never looked at them since

Use WISE for any transfer......beats conventional bank transfers hands down

Compared to how swift used to work it's a godsend. Last time I used swift the bank here held onto the money until the rate dropped, lost 40k baht. With swift you know what you will be getting

I've used swift for monthly transfers for years and never an issue. Swift wasn't the problem the receiving bank you used was. Positive tracking and always coded correctly. Wise is ok until it isn't and its not a bank so not under any of the normal banking rules and protections.  It seems to be in the not ok category lately on a regular basis.

Weekend transfers have never been an issue, even midnight during weekends would arrive in seconds.

Neither of the transfers was initiated from a Muslim country or Muslim bank either

My transfer just arrived. From the UK, they do have Eid there I think.

Not in my case on the one occasion I looked at Wise, but each to their own 🍻

Yes. In most cases, Wise already has the money “in the country” and pays it out locally.
If Wise doesn't have a direct connection to the recipient bank, they use another bank or a partner in the destination country.

Swift from europe: About 2-3 days.

Wire transfer from USA (Wells Fargo): One day.

Wise from Singapore: Kasikorn Bank 10 sec to 5 min, to Krungsri Bank: 1 day.

But we do not know how Wise route cash if they utilise any Arabic banks

We just know its usually instant from USA to my wise account
converted to whatever wallets i have
and then using said balance for each country
longest i waited was 1 hour it was a Friday usually my thai balance to any account in thailand has been instant within minutes

but i do notice some of you doing it in a straight transfer including curency exchange which seems to create a delay.

if you are transferring from your account to your wise it should be instant
at least has been for me

if your getting it from another third party perhaps not so quick to cover money laundering laws

Seeing this topic reminded me I needed to transfer some money. I just made two transfers with Wise from GBP to THB into mine and my GF's Thai accounts (Bangkok Bank and Kbank). One took 14 seconds, the other took 15 seconds.

Presumably you meant to say "With Wise you know what you will be getting". With Swift, anything but - unless you have succeeded in acquiring a crystal ball which will accurately predict the TT rate levied by your Thai bank at the time your transfer finally shows up with them. And, in my experience, while you may well be able to work out the charges levied by your originating home country bank and destination Thai bank, the big mystery is how much extra the intermediary Thai partner bank used by your home country bank will add for their services on top.

Large Swift transfers usually end up being more cost effective than Wise due to the charges involved (+ you usually get a better exchange rate on larger transfers).

No idea where the “swing” point is but would guess that somebody doing a one off transfer of 780K (using the suggested amount for retirees) for their annual living costs would find it more cost effective to do it via Swift.

Edit: Just did a test on Wise & the fees for sending £17,500 are £103.98… Swift is typically £9.99

But normally the exchange rate with Kbank is 0.4% less with swift

Whilst I agree with your assessment of larger transactions it is likely that the much better exchange rate (usually) with WISE will always outweigh the higher fees.

Your final statement is misleading as the fees are irrelevant without also quoting the respective rates of exchange.

As a retired bank manager any SWIFT transfers I do are free................it is still noticeably more cost effective to use WISE. .....and, of course, nobody should ever convert local currency to THB onshore.

There’s a comparison tool on the Wise site that suggests your right for transfers up to 2Million (Wise doesn’t have an option to send more than this)…https://wise.com/gb/compare/barclays-gbp-to-thb

You’ll note that the Barclays rate changes depending on how much you’re sending… (big difference in rate between sending £1,000 & £17,500).

Interesting perk of being Ex-Bank staff, I can remember when I worked for Barclays we used to be able to buy our holiday currency at the Bank’s Buy rate rather than the Sell rate 😊

That was similar to my experience. As I only do it once a year or so, and as the traditional method worked well before and was actually less than Wise, I'll stick to traditional I guess. If I need to start doing regular transfers, Wise might be more convenient/logical. But I also see their reputation is starting to suffer. Might be just a few odd snafus, dunno, but anyway.. (edited to correct the name)
