Just curious if there are and new haunts that guys from 70's era in Bangkok frequent today.  Same time and era of Washington square... some fond memories.

As I said, maybe on a different thread, I went back to old haunts, but took my bike- for the purpose of cycling- and it was disastrous.  I am not the man that I was when I went to those places before.  The cycling was grand, though.

Never went to Grace before it got taken over by the ME demographic, had a look at Washington Square- too boring. Patpong was too commercial and the night market was a mood killer trying to get around.

Cowboy was my first haunt, Tilac to be precise, before it went trendy, violet and not worth visiting. My first GF was from there, till she got too grumpy.

Nana was the cheese though, paradise on earth. It died long ago though, when they put the bars in the square and Hollywood Royale closed.

After that I just went to Pattaya, which was great till the city council went mad and imagined it as some sort of Riviera.

Seems that all the old haunts are not very good anymore.

You cycled in Bkk? You must like living dangerously!

If you got a takeaway did she sit on the crossbar?

Washington Square was cool. I started going to Thermae the year it moved to the Ruamchitt. Do you remember Woodstock up in the corner of Nana? Before the roof was put on?

Never stayed in Woodstock. Had a look in the door once.

My time in Bangkok only goes back to the early 80s, so I guess I missed out on the 70s scene.

But yeah, back in the day Super Star, Grand Prix, Safari, Crown Royal, Washington Square and early Nana Plaza.

Haven't been out much in recent decades. Getting old, perhaps.

I think most of the new haunts frequented by those still here from the 70s are likely to be doctors' offices instead of bars.

The Grace used to be our terminus after spilling out of the original Thermae at 0500. The demographic you mention was already well established there (by late 1970's I think). We used to make a point of calling in for a bacon and something breakfast! Happy days.

Who remembers The Three Roses, and Rosemary 1 & Rosemary 2 bars on Suk? They were the best.

I still have the memories though even those are fading nowadays I would struggle to even climb the stairs.

Holy Buddha ... NO

Grace was the first hotel I ever stayed in TH, (1999) and the worst ever, worldwide.  Thankfully only one night, and off to Phuket the next day.   Patpong, again, one of the worst, if not, areas of Krung Thep, if not TH.   Scam central.

When I did finally hear about Thermae ... took the advice and avoided.  All 3 visited by lowest scrapings of the barrel. :w00t:

might make me sound weird, i was never into the bar or sex industry scene (tbh i never had trouble finding a gf), but back in the day i did like to wander the red light area just watching what was going on. the therme was an interesting place to sit, have a drink and just watch, i witnessed the slow change as the japanese guys took over, after that it ceased to be interesting.

Legendary yes. Best? Hmmm..

Thermae 1 was especially seedy ,the clap guarenteed ,women under the table giving head for a 100 bath ,back door entrance was very squalid ,guys banging women at the back door in the dark up against the wall .

I went out cycling in the day time.

It's probably safer when the traffic is moving slower.

I went up and down Sukhumvit Road, and round about. It surprisingly felt quite safe, so long as you kept your wits about you; I was probably lucky I was on my folding bike, so I wasn't going too fast.

A couple of songs on the juke box in Thermaes will always bring back memories. ' Last train to London ' and ' Midnight rider ' by Paul Davidson.

On weekends used to go to the weekend market which was then all around Sanam Luang. On weekday evenings I sometimes rode my small motorcycle there as there was a lively freelancer scene . Picked up some nice company who got a buzz going with a ' farang ' on the back of his bike.

On Sundays there used to be very little traffic and I would just ride and ride with no destination  in mind. The Thonburi side was almost totally undeveloped and very rural.

Happy memories

Thank god for an escalator at Nana.

I cant even go past the first floor in a German Rotehaus any more.

Ah the Grace. The days of Russian girls. Wasnt there a hotel filled with Russian girls across from Ladyboy Corner on Soi Nana?

Anyone remember the receptionist at the Nana Hotel the hot one with all the bracelets? How about when folks actually ate at the Chinese place on the corner of Suk Soi 15? There was an Asia books near there too.

That's entirely subjective. To me Hollywood Royale was the cheese. Two stages ( one of naked beauties the other for the shy ones ), porn on the screen, excellent shows, great music, and as interesting a crowd as one could wish for till well after dawn- but that was before the 98 crash and all the expats lost their jobs. It was a sad day when Purachai destroyed the scene. The H R has long gone, of course- nothing good lasts.

Phuket ( Patong I assume ) in 99 was well ruined. I was long gone to Phangan by then, but of course I had to bring my own from Pattaya or Bkk.

Sometimes it was so interesting just watching what was going on that I missed out on a good one and went to bed alone. That was back before the gogo girls went freelancing after the bars closed. Back then no girl would freelance as if caught not getting a barfine would be sacked. Different times as after the bars closed Sukhumvit was deserted. The freelance scene and the pavement bars only came about after early closing started- that scumbag Purachai again- but he only succeeded in transferring the business from inside Nana to Sukhumvit Road.
