Pattaya is for wallowing in perversion once and then telling your friends all about the real Thailand on message boards

Why would anyone retire there.

I have told many people -- like you -- that found their new and exciting retirement in Thailand quickly boring and depressing: you stay in your own head, in the end, it is you who comes with you.

I don't know why he keeps going there. Always unhappy.

I went to Bangkok, Korat, Khon Kaen, Udon, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, That Phanom. Had a great time.

If I was an Academic which I am to a degree ,I would do a thesis on how many single farangs GO BACK to their home country , disillusioned at retiring in Pattaya

Really I should be called Dr George because I study this ...

But let's paint a rosy colour

"Oh I wake up every morning, go for my walk on the nice beach

Then have my $2 big breakfast of bacon eggs and sausages

Then I head to get a $2 foot massage

And then have a afternoon nap

Then I go to a lovely bar and talk to Roger the dodger  blah blah blah

And wake up....and do it again

I hate to break it to you GG, but that's life.

Next time you visit spend maybe a week at other beach locations. having a Thai DL  and a car here in Thailand would give you the freedom to not live in a condo. I agree Pattaya would get old after awhile which is why I suggest trying some of the beach destinations in the surrounding area like Rayong.

Dusit Grande Park in the back streets? It cannot be Dusit Grand Condo, as Copacabana is opposite.

Why do you always 'choose' such places?

It seems to me you spend all your time on this forum. You're ladyboy friend must be missed.

No I don't miss you at all.

Dusit Grande Park...

I don't understand why someone would go on holiday to a beach location and decide to stay in the jungle.

The sea air and atmosphere makes all the difference.

78 provinces to choose from.

Ever thought of that?

I spend lots of time in Udon, Khon Kaen, Nong Khai.

never been to those places, but I assume you are mostly restricted to thai restaurants and KFC?

Nong Khai has good Vietnamese food. Udon has good farang food. Khon Kaen has good Japanese food.

Udon has the best choice of hotels.

25 baht to travel between Udon and Khon Kaen via train.

If you cannot find something that motivates you, fills your time and makes living worthwhile, then even a place like Thailand will not help you overcome your internal issues. But, I am saddened to say, there is a big likelihood that you also will not be happy in most other places on the planet.

Find a way to be happy, then choose the proper surrounding to live it out. Not the other way round. Just my 2c.

Great advice for normal thinking people considering retirement in  a country other than their own.

Completely wasted on idiots who can't even remember the name of their hotel and think their workplace and other people should be their personal entertainment venues and directors.

Amazing how he goes to Thailand and has a lousy time. How is that possible?

In all honesty I dont think GG even knows the name of the condo he is staying in. Poor old fart simply does not have a clue about anything, let alone a holiday in Pattaya.

When you finally get back to Aus, please tell Albo and anyone else how you feel.

No doubt he will be impressed with your tale of being bitch slapped by a monkey

You might think that this is 'just 2c worth', but I think it is excellent advice.

Yes it is. Find who you are, then find the location. George doesn't know if he wants to be up or down.

I feel sorry for you OP,

If you still have family and a place to live back in Oz then go there and start a new life.

Thailand is not for you......many of us find it is, I've been here 21 years now, sold my biz, married a gal, very very content, but it's not for everyone.

I wish you all the luck in the world back home

Does a retirement of relaxation and exercise really sound that bad?  Throw in some reading or some other hobby, and it sounds pretty good.  Some nice coffee whilst reading/watching the news, breakfast, a couple of hours in the gym, a gentle swim, some reading/researching something, a more creative hobby as well, why is that so bad?  Is that not a routine?

What do you want to be doing?

I will be heading back to that woke highly taxed  country Australia this weekend,

I have decided on this trip to Thailand particularly Pattaya that again I won't be retiring this year , particularly after I was assaulted in Lopburi and no action was taken

I woke up this morning early in my Jomtien Airbnb which I must say is the size of a motel room but had good faculties, very very long swimming pool and good gym

Grand Dusit or whatever it's silly name is ,it's about 10 minutes walk to Rompho markets

How the hell could someone live in a room this size 21sqm , so I laid on the bed here this morning thinking , " George if you retired this is your life "

Waking up everyday in a room , maybe go to the gym , swimming pool , then what .......

Oh they make it so good don't they the rosy rose coloured glass crowd

They start off " oh I woke up went to the gym and then swimming then went for a lovely breakfast then went to the beach then had a beautiful massage blah blah blah

Boring day after day and depressing .

I really feel sorry for you single old men who have to get through each day waking up by yourself in Pattaya thinking what the hell would I be doing today because you gave up your job and life in the west to sit in a box of a room and NO ROUTINE

Life just drifts on , some of you may even turn to bars , alcohol etc to get company, others may just withdraw

It's great for 5 months and yes I used 5 instead of 6 months just to be different

And you know you can't spend as much being an expat as a tourist so you end up staying in that box most nights of the week

You realise the ladies of the night are now expensive your living here ,2000 baht etc plus bar fines ,drinks

You have no real friends in Pattaya only others you see in a bar or bookshop cafe ,they wouldn't do anything for you without payment

So eventually your rose coloured glasses come off

Pattaya is not so good for retirement now is it you think

All you ever do is whine and moan. I can imagine you're a real joy to be around in person. I bet the locals down there will be greatly missing you when you leave.

Just walk around Central mall in the afternoon you will see all the 60/70 year old men with cute 25 yearolds in their tight shorts walking around together.  That is why men retire in Pattaya because they are sick of stinky old, fat, bad attitude western females who walk around in their fat clothes with their hair in a bun and no make-up.

Well perhaps you could consider areas other than Pattaya, there are a lot of great spots in Thailand that many of us have found and I know friends who rent three bedroom, two bath homes in nice areas for 10,000 baht per month. So you don't have to be cooped up in one of those ridiculously tiny studios, living like a monk.

My presumption is that you must own a home in Australia free and clear, because otherwise how on earth could you afford to go back there?

To me there are two main reasons for staying in LOS for years:

1) It is cheap.  Sometimes it feels like for every $1 I have $2

2) Obtaining and extending retirement visa/ext of stay is not difficult. That is so far it has not been difficult but in the future things could change.

I will put up with some boredom and lack of connection with Thai  people (they do not seem to want that and are only interested in transactional contacts like buying a service or a product).  So I stay in my space and do my best to get along with them.  I have estaablished a daily routine and so far it has been accpetable. I do travel to real countries like Singapore, S. Korea and Malaysia from time to time bu realize I do not have or make enough money for long term stay in these countries. Based upon my research and experience countries like these want the truly wealthy for as long term stayers.  Maybe in the next life?

If reasons 1 or 2 change then I would leave and only return as a short term tourist.
