Thailand to Boost US Imports Amid Tariff Turmoil

Hey Donald' look at why the Baht' hasn't tanked please! and slap another 50% on🤔

Mostly because Thai is still in black, unlike US of A.

That's one of the biggest reason why THB remains high.

Now days, THB is often bought as the Refugee Currency.

Used to be JPY, but changed.

  • How does the government import more without a higher budget? American products are expensive. Which agricultural goods does Thailand need from America? Sounds like coals to Newcastle.

  • Smarter countries are just dropping their tariffs against the US. Thailand will negotiate their way into a worse position

  • Anyone with half a brain can work out the obvious action to take: (1) reduce Thai tariffs on US imports down to a sensible level (eg 10%), then (2) negotiate with Uncle Donald to reduce the US tariffs

It's not just about the tariffs countries slap on US goods, it's the VAT too, which compounds the issue, especially in countries that have VAT at 10% or more... a big barrier to trade for imports.

The US doesn't do retail tax in the same way, it leaves it up to the individual states to decide the retail tax level, and some states don't have any at all. If you look at the levels of import taxes countries put on US goods compared to the old US tariffs for exports from other countries, then there is a huge imbalance... then add the VAT, and it is grime reading.

For example, the EU puts 39% tariffs on US goods, then you add the VAT, and they are whinging about 20% in return... a little delusional really, and same goes for everyone else with huge trade imbalances. Thailand and others can hardly complain with their aversion to imports, to protect their home-grown monopolies etc... can't have it both ways.

I'm not saying tariffs are good, but I'm not suprised a businessman who is elected president is pissed-off about the imbalance... the answer is FTAs, but that scares many smaller local economies that like protectionism. Can't have your cake and eat it though... you have to choose.

It will be interesting to know how they are going to do this with the current tariff debacle

i) Do the Thai exporters take the hit and reduce prices to cover the Tariffs for the importer, probably difficult for most companies to do that or

ii) Do the government step in and cover the cost of the US Import duties for the Thai exporter not really very clear in her statement all well and good getting people to talk to people but Orange Face has said this morning the Tariffs are staying in place so anyone with stocks and shares or private pensions expect another hit today when the markets open

Isn't it possible that Thailand could reduce its own tariffs on U.S. goods to zero, as several other countries have done? I'm sure that the U.S. would gladly reciprocate with zero tariffs on Thai goods. Problem solved, eh? Cheers!

There are some very good cheeses made in the US.

I hope they choose the top quality, craft cheeses for zero import duty.

I never pay for imported goods when there is an import duty.

(Against my principles...)

Avoid import duties on cheese at Foodland. They have local cheddar and mozzarella. The Euros might not like it, but it's good enough for me. I do wish I could get some great US made Velveeta tariff free.

Well, there you go, President Trump is winning again. Its seems that many countries are now willing to drop their excessive anti-competitive tariffs against the United States now that a U.S. President has the guts to stand up to these countries. President Trump is making American great again.

I really feel sorry for Americans.

Either they are trapped in a country where living costs are going up, higher unemployment, a broken health system and heading for recession/depression.

Or they have lost all rational faculties, and think a felon and sexual predator in the White House will actually make America great again.

One of the things I enjoy here in South America is the Cheese. So cheap and pretty good.

I think this is part of the arm twisting negotiations.

Arm twisting negotiations? The US has an $11.9 billion trade surplus with the UK and the UK got hit with 10% tariff. The only negotiation is what the punitive tariff that the UK puts on the US is. It could be worse, the Netherlands has a negative trade balance with the US and a EU member has been hit with 40%. Trump really doesn't get this international trade thing does he.

Untrue since the US still applies a tariff even if there is a trade surplus in their favour. And of course applies a tariff on uninhabited islands.

reminds me of the Aus/Thai fee trade agreement.

Aus exported to car to Thailand .. no import tarriffs... Great !

Internal taxes had those cars on the local Thai market at 3X the same car price in Aus!!!

THAI was banned from flying to the US in 2015 due to its failure to comply with US safety standards.

Interesting that the US applies safety standards but the US expects other countries to ignore safety standards. So the US is expecting the UK to import Chlorinated chicken from the US.

Argentina and New Zealand.

USA has like 3% market share.

Never seen beef from Argentina or NZ in Thailand .milk powder from NZ yes.

Thailand dose produce beef of its own ,look at Thai Angus beef from Macro not bad ,they is the Thai/ French beef company in Issan , they use a Charolais X Brahman breed plus a couple more outlets ,using the same breed.

Chlorinated chicken is the poster-boy product for all that is wrong with US food... but even if they allowed it in, pretty much no-one would buy it because of its infamous rep. As long as food stuffs are clearly labeled, then who cares?

It's a little bit nanny state BS to say that people are too stupid to make decisions for themselves on what to buy if clearly labelled... if you buy the likes of chlorinated chicken, then you deserve the consequences for being a complete moron.

Boycott EVERYTHING American!!! Then tarriffs won't matter

Better make sure the airplane isn't a Boeing next time you fly in/out of Thailand!

The last time you went swimming in a public pool, you immersed yourself in chlorinated water.

Just, PLEASE, slide me the STILTON....!!!

I would die for STILTON, just about now.

But, I would rather die than pay any import duty on cheese, of any kind.

And, if not Stilton, than I will turn up my nose....

Probably it would be used in processed/pre-prepared foods, catering etc.  Not always so easy for the customer to establish origin.

The problem is not just tariffs. It's IP, and the trade deficit. Thailand is taking the $30+ billion they get from the US and they send that money straight to China. Thailand has a trade surplus with the US, but a deficit with China. This is what Trump is addressing. Countries are going to need to pick a side, either China or the US. AI is going to rapidly expand the military industrial complex and the winner of the AI race potentially secures a 1000 year reign.

The last time I was in a swimming pool must have been 50 years ago.

AI is usually wrong.  I never use it.

The Einsteins working for Trump used AI to get their list of countries with a trade deficit to the US.  The AI list mistakenly included the uninhabited Heard and McDonald islands.  Thats how Trump ended up taxing penguins.

tsk tsk ..      it sops china from labeling their product as shipping from those 2 islands ( a loophole ) thus avoiding the tariffs

Trump has outsmarted them ..    Again !

That was just a lie.  The list is missing dozens of other territories that could be used as loopholes.  There is no logical reason the particular uninhabited islands were included.

The particular uninhabited islands that were included are mistakenly in a database of territories with a trade deficit to the US, thats the only reason.

Of course it was just a lie.  Their explanation was manufactured after the fact.

How did the penguins manage to export $1.4 million worth of goods to the USA in 2022?  (World Bank numbers, reported by The Guardian and others)

We trained the penguins to crap guano in one spot, which was then exported as nitrogen fertilizer, so the US could grow soybeans.

Yes, it is ridiculous.  Trump is not terribly bright and doesn't understand economics and the people around him, except for those like Navarro who are as unhinged as he is, are playing an Emperor's New Clothes pantomime just to hold on to power and make money from using their inside knowledge of the next mad announcement to short markets.  Goods are imported from countries that can produce them at the low prices that American consumers are willing to pay.  It is not the producing countries fault that they are able to satisfy US commercial demands.

You are not fair.

The Don has a good heart.

He told us all  (I suppose, you are on his social network like everybody else): "now is the time to buy"

A couple of hours later he raised the S&P500 by 10%.

That's quite the opposite of insider trading.

Now, if you didn't seize this opportunity to make a couple of millions because you were busy posting on TV instead of following The Don...
