China Halts Critical Exports as Trade War Intensifies

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

China has suspended exports of a wide range of critical minerals and magnets, threatening to choke off supplies of components central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world.

Shipments of the magnets, essential for assembling everything from cars and drones to robots and missiles, have been halted at many Chinese ports while the Chinese government drafts a new regulatory system. Once in place, the new system could permanently prevent supplies from reaching certain companies, including American military contractors.

No. The fault is Trump's. If so many of us here on aseannow.com could see the threat posed by this dearth, what excuse has he got?

Well will the village idiots in the White House and the MAGA morons realise that we live in an age of economic globalisation and planetary inter-connectivity?

All the countries which produce and/or have large reserves of rare earths have been hit with massive USA tariffs, even Australia which has a large trade DEFICIT with the USA!!!

In the words of the immortal Forrest Gump "Stupid is, stupid does".

That likely means Trump will really start applying pressure on Ukraine to sign his one sided minerals and oil deal.

The fault is ours.

We chose to allow China to monopolize manufacture of....EVERYTHING.

This began in the early 80s.

Was having China in the WTO actually such a great idea?

I can clearly recall, in the early 80s, just how idiotic were many of the decisions being made, at the time.

The decisions were based on wishful thinking, and not reality.

And, the decisions were motivated by American Corporate Greed....for sure.

The West just got lazy; like the Greeks, like the Romans.

It is/has been too easy for big companies to make huge profits by letting China do most of the Engineering work.

Probably if you also look at the education system you may find more in the West graduate with these fluffy Buisness Degrees than graduate with Engineering Degrees.

In the West, how many people work from home?

You can't be working on a production line or in a factory making things if you're working from home.

We are just lazy.

Given current conditions in Ukraine, even if a deal was signed, I doubt there are going to be too many miners interested in exploiting these resources. But let's say there were. Doesn't this actually give Ukraine leverage?

That said, Ukraine isn't the only place where rare earths can be found. But even expedited, it would take at least a couple of years to get the mine into production. Then there's the matter of processing the ore into the various rare earth products.

Keep going Mr Trump; never weaken against the vile, expansionist, murderous, plagiaristic, repressive CCP. Put Winnie-the-Pooh back in his box.

2 comments making the issue about me. That's because both of you have got no good defense for Trump's rash actions. But if you do want to keep on talking about me, maybe you should go the the gossip forum.

Maybe the tariffs on China should be much higher!

One trick pony much? How would that mitigate the severity of the rare earths issue?

It does and easily accessed.

You buy an illegal satellite dish and stick it on your building wall, then an illegal (copied) receiver with changeable cards, so everytime the authorities block a signal, you change the card.

The one year I was working there, non of these dishes I knew about were raided.

I'm sure you think your comment is relevant. I can recall similar comments directed at critics of the George W. Bush's Iraq War.

An interesting tactic, but let's not forget that China desperately needs to sell these products to the US, so it's really just a game of chicken.

It will be interesting to see how this affects things.  Can the US find another source, will it force them to innovate, or will China cave after a short period of time?

Does China desperately need to sell them as much as the USA desperately needs them. China is preparing steps to export them while keeping those rare earths from getting to the USA.

You obviously don’t realise that the majority of these products is already used domestically in China. China doesn’t need to sell any to the US (lots of other countries would happily buy them) but the US desperately needs them.

Guess who will cave? Rhetorical question, no need to answer.

Let's not get carried away. China has been trying to export its way out of its serious economic difficulties. One thing its policies haven't seriously encouraged is domestic consumption. Its economic policy is geared towards promoting manufacturing. And China produces way more than it can consume.

Seems to me that it’s those countries that aren’t doing business with the communists that are “going wrong”. Meanwhile, the Global Majority is coming along nicely.

I would imagine China needs to sell them more than the US needs to buy them.

When you offshore production of a product, you rely on another country for a product.  When you are the the country being offshored to, then you rely on that product being bought in order to generate income.

They might still be exporting them, but they obviously won't be exporting them in anywhere near the same numbers, which means a much lower income.  This is all while the current tariffs are still affecting them.  And we haven't even seen how Trump will respond.

Obviously, for most things, the US can likely find another source, whilst China cannot find a buyer to replace the US.

It's all really a question of how long the Chinese can afford to hold out.

I’m referring specifically to the rare earth minerals and products.

Having said that, it won’t be difficult for China to expand domestic consumption if it really wants to.
