Crime Motorbike Taxi Driver Arrested for Egg Attack on Tourist in Hua Hin

A local motorbike taxi driver has been arrested after hurling eggs at foreign tourists in Hua Hin, in an incident that has sparked widespread criticism online. 

 

The attack, apparently triggered by frustration over ride-hailing apps affecting traditional drivers’ income, ended with the tourists offering forgiveness and reaffirming their love for Thailand.

 

 

The incident occurred on the evening of 17 April outside Hua Hin Railway Station. Ms Banita Gopal Periah, a tourist from Mauritius, had just arrived in Hua Hin by train with her husband and used a ride-hailing app to book transport to their accommodation. While approaching the vehicle, an unidentified individual threw fresh eggs at the car, splattering both the vehicle and the passengers.

 

Shocked by the experience, Ms Periah posted the ordeal in the popular Facebook group Life in Hua Hin, a social space frequented by international visitors to the seaside town. “I’ve just arrived from Mauritius, and I can’t believe something like this happened,” she wrote. “I’m still in shock.”

 

The post quickly went viral, drawing strong condemnation from both Thai locals and fellow tourists. Many expressed concern over the negative impact such incidents could have on Hua Hin’s image as a tourist-friendly destination.

 

Police Colonel Kampanat Na Wichai, Superintendent of Hua Hin Police Station, confirmed that officers had identified and arrested two individuals involved in the attack, a female motorbike taxi driver and a 16-year-old girl. Both confessed to the crime.

 

According to police, the suspects cited growing frustration and financial stress as their motive. The rise of app-based transport services had significantly reduced their income over the past few months, leading to mounting resentment. However, they insisted they did not intend to harm tourists or damage the reputation of Hua Hin.

 

Investigations also revealed that similar incidents had occurred three times in the week leading up to this attack.

 

Despite the shocking nature of the incident, Ms Periah responded with compassion. In a follow-up Facebook post, she thanked Thai police and locals for their support and praised the professionalism of the officers involved.

 

“I want to thank the people of Hua Hin and the police for taking this seriously. The officers conducted themselves professionally, and I was touched by the kindness of those who assisted me throughout,” she wrote.

 

“As a teacher who works with underprivileged youth, I understand the stress and pressure people face. I asked the police to issue only a warning to prevent this from happening again. I still believe Thailand is the Land of Smiles, and I love Hua Hin even more today.”

Not too many tourists arriving with a suitcase would be keen to call a taxi which turned out to be a motor-bike.   (btw, a few respondents here seem not to have noticed that the egg-throwers were both female.)

problem is they pay less than what motorcycle taxi drivers used to make a few years ago before they became so popular. It's probably about the same now, if you drive for Grab or drive a proper "win" motorcycle taxi, you'll maybe make 300-400 per day, which is peanuts. Before Grab et al, they could make more like 600-800 a day (though it varies based on the location). I know because my girlfriend used to ride one and she's friends with lots of drivers. 

 

So it all boils down to the fact there's no recourse. Grab is taking a hefty cut and you can't beat them or join them without accepting the same lower wage.

ride-hailing apps affecting traditional drivers because traditional drivers will sit on their rank for hours eating and drinking with no customers while the ride hail app drivers are working their asses off non stop cleaning up. These traditional drivers are greedy often charging double what the ride hail app charges. I remember wanting to go from one location to my home and you could not get anyone interested for less than 500 baht on a motorcycle.  That was over 5 years ago,  but now I can get a bolt (car) to take me for 166 baht for a 25 minute trip and Bolt took out of that a 20 baht booking fee. Another example Ride hail Soi arunotai to terminal 21 38 baht but win soi arunothai to Pattaya nua bus, probably shorter trip 100 baht.  The traditional drivers who refuses to use ride hail app are dinosaurs.

I think it is a combination of being able to communicate your destination effectively (language barrier), knowing the fare or fare price range, having an estimated time the driver will arrive, convenience of someone picking you up at a certain location, the driver and car information being available along with rating provides some comfort.  Additionally if you have special requirements (a lot of people or luggage) you can select the appropriate size vehicle.

Of course they could - but then they couldn't 'double charge'... 

 

Grab / Bolt works very well in Hua Hun - because the drivers are honest and add an element of confidence, also there is no confusion regarding the destination etc.... Taxi drivers in Thailand have a reputation for attempting scams (of course not all are)... 

 

Those drivers who are honest have already joined in with Grab and Bolt - the one's who do not wish to, are the ones which wish to pull a fast one on the tourists and try to charge extra after sitting around doing nothing for most of the day.

It's noticed [that the 'egg throwers were female']...   Had it been males, they would have been physically attacking the driver, which is the normal story we read when such 'turf conflicts' exist.

I travel allot I pay a little more for the ride app's like Uber. But, I have the price upfront and know I will not be taken for a ride or over charged by a lot.  I avoid the taxies when ever possible. Never had a problem with Uber and other app's. With the Taxies it is pot luck at best.
