And I thought Thailand road fatalities were bad.

Featured Replies

Every morning, India's newspapers are filled with reports of road accidents - passenger buses plunging into mountain gorges, drunk drivers mowing down pedestrians, cars crashing into stationary trucks and two-wheelers being knocked down by larger vehicles.

These daily tragedies underscore a silent crisis: in 2023 alone, more than 172,000 people lost their lives on Indian roads, averaging 474 deaths each day or nearly one every three minutes.

The more people a country has the more deaths there will be, goes without saying

Zimbabwe. 41.2 / 100,000

In Asia Thailand takes the #1 spot with the highest rate of road deaths on the entire continent!  🏆

Only if they can afford to ply the roads.

There are a few tipping points in there.  Like Thailand, where so many can afford scooters but not cars.  And other countries where millions can't even afford to sit inside their public transport.

You have to look at deaths per km driven, not per capita.  Since that data's hard to find, a distant second place would be deaths per registered vehicle.

Because some populous countries have very few cars (or more to the point, few scooters).  But their roads are a horror show for the few who do drive.

Could be that India includes deaths in hospital as a result of a road accident. Thailand does not. If they did the figure for Thailand would be greatly increased. Also, you have to remember the populations of India and Thailand. There is a serious difference in the populations.

You can only drive 1 vehicle at a time, and most accidents happen close to home I believe.  So less miles might be more dangerous.

per capita is ball park enough for me :coffee1:

You're missing this statistic.  Thailand has 8.4 times as many vehicles per capita as Thailand.  (277/33)

So if they have the same death rate per capita, India's 8.4 times as dangerous per vehicle.  Which is a better comparison of the relative danger of getting out on the road.

Oops.  Here's my link:  Who Owns the Most Vehicles per Capita, by Country?

Unless a true accident, one you have no control over, or impossible to foresee, then it seems most die from stupidity, and or lack of defensive driving skills.  IMHO

Hong Kong 189th.  A lot to do with good police enforcement, but it doesn't mean I think the standard of driving is very high.  There are lot of small accidents here (fender benders), nearly always because of a complete inability to look before moving or changing lanes.

Roughly India has a population 20 times that of Thailand

Considering some of those high ranking countries have high crime rates as well just wondering how many of those road fatalities were deliberate. (Hit and run). On a related matter do fatalities include cows in India?

India's population is huge. Consider per capita. Every other time I do a long journey down a highway I see the remnants of an accident: pick up truck on its side or some other sort of accident, on a straight stretch in dry weather with no intersection which is confusing.. They tailgate often not allowing braking distances and the general standard of driving cars is not that good. Better on motorbikes, but many men ride crazy and drunk.
