The last day for Foodpanda is 23 May.  I use either Foodpanda or Grab every day.  Sucks that the most English/foreigner friendly one is closing.  I hope Grab can up their game.

Foodpanda was problematic when an error happened and they got rid of human help a while ago, but it usually worked just fine.

Not sure I've ever user any of these,I use Grab market to get stuff from supermarkets without parking there LOL

The apps do have a lot of competing pressures of course.

Attracting drivers with enough pay to make such a rough job worth it.

Attracting restaurants while forcing them to cut their margins to pay them.

Attracting customers with good enough service, and attractive enough incentives to encourage frequent usage.

It's definitely not an instant minting money concept.

I do know in the US now paying for delivery is more of a luxury item than an everyday thing.

In Thailand it's much more of everyday thing, with people of all classes using it frequently even for very small orders.

I hope it can remain that way.

I think it's okay value for foreign food.

I ain't paying 80 baht for a regular Thai fried rice on Grab/Food Panda app (it's normally 40 baht in the shop), when I could order a Japanese curry for 120.

The markup on apps for normal Thai food just ain't worth it. I get that you have to pay for delivery, but it ain't worth double.

It really depends on the specific restaurant.  One of my favorite nearby Thai restaurants has the exact same prices for eat in and Grab so with free delivery and 20 percent off delivery is cheaper.

who would be so lazy to use it every day when there are thousands of restaurants out there?

unless you live in a remote area?

I wondered how they made money. I've had Pro since 2022 for maybe 200 baht/year and got free/discounted delivery and many 25% or more discounts + vouchers.

It was good while it lasted...like other things in the LOS

LOS was a cute catchphrase that was good while it lasted.  Not sure why people don't just call it Thailand these days, unless you mean the land of scams, land of scowls, etc.

Buy a laptop.

I'm not sure how that would help.

Grab Food is available on Chromebook, Phone and Tablet.

Same for Line Man.

It's a shame, compared to Grab, Food Panda is far superior in terms of quality! I switched to FP a few months ago because of Grab's more than questionable behavior; constant problems with navigation. Apparently, anyone who can operate a motorcycle can drive there, but has no idea about customer service!

Very disappointing. I've used Food Panda for many years and like it's web-based ordering, Now I'll have to download the Grab Food app on my phone and learn how to. use it!

PM sent, as don't think we're allowed to quote the source I found (BkkPost)

Apparently ROI aren't worth the hassle.

Total bummer. The service was totally fine, and I thought it was even expanding, especially when compared to similar businesses in other countries that are quite successful..
I wonder what the reasons are behind this decision. Maybe somebody on the forum can give an educated guess

i think this article will answer your questions

Thanks for that.  Though BKK Post is blocked here (I think on the BKKPost side), I was able to Bing search a snippet and found the Delivery Hero public announcement.  Which left me wondering if this is just going to end up being a name change...

Berlin, April 23, 2025 – Delivery Hero SE (“Delivery Hero,” the “Company,” or the “Group”), the world’s leading local delivery platform, today announced that foodpanda, its Asia-based business, will stop operating its platform, food and grocery delivery services in Thailand on 23 May 2025.

This decision is in line with Delivery Hero’s focus on optimizing its geostrategy – as shown by the previous discontinuation of operations in countries such as Denmark, Ghana, Slovakia and Slovenia. Delivery Hero will continue concentrating efforts in other parts of APAC where the Group sees greater return.

The Company’s regional team which provides services such as marketing and people operations for the Asia-Pacific region, and is based in Thailand, will continue to operate as usual.

Delivery Hero continues geostrategy optimization and exits Thailand - Delivery Hero

Fortunately for me, I've never used these services. I really don't see the point.

I prefer to cook at home, eat out or pick something up whilst I'm out.

I really can't comprehend those that claim to use food delivery services everyday, unless there is a disability or mobility issue.

The wife and GF cook the same crap day in day out.

I need to break up the routine with a Pizza Co pizza or a Hungry Jacks burger now and then.

Correction! I think I was too optimistic about Food Panda: I just had an order canceled two hours after placing it...unprofessional and amateurish!🤬🤢

That's what microwaves are for.  We even bought a small one to take with us when O&A :cheesy:

I don't order food unless it's freshly cooked, and I don't eat warm food if it's delivered.  That's a recipe for intestinal issues, I don't want.

I have a good "recipe for intestinal issues" passed down from my great grandma. Oh, wait, that was chitlins.

nature abhors a vacuum, something will fill in the gaps. I do my own cooking except when I travel, and get food delivered from Tops. They're pretty good but they don't keep a very big inventory in their online location, many items are out of stock and still listed. For 99 baht/month you get free express delivery within an hour. I'm also fortunate in that there is a cheap Thail/Burmese restaurant on the 1st floor of my building along with a mini mart

From an article on LinkedIn:-

After 13 years operating in Thailand, Foodpanda has announced its exit by May 23, 2025. Despite being the first food delivery app available across all 77 provinces, the company consistently struggled financially, accumulating losses of around 13.36 billion baht (approximately $399 million) between 2019 and 2023. Failing to ever make an annual profit.

Market dominance remained elusive, with Foodpanda capturing just under 15% of market share, trailing behind strong competitors like Lineman Wongnai (44%) and GrabFood (39.4%). Attempts to find a buyer, including discussions with major players such as Grab and Meituan, ultimately fell through, perhaps sealing their decision to withdraw. Beyond financial struggles, Foodpanda faced significant political and social backlash. A major incident in July 2021, where the company controversially labeled a protesting rider a "terrorist," sparked a widespread boycott under the hashtag hashtag#แบนfoodpanda (hashtag#BanFoodpanda), resulting in around 2 million app deletions and numerous restaurant partnerships dissolving overnight. Additionally, Foodpanda faced labour disputes, notably in Chiang Mai in August 2021, where riders protested sudden pay cuts, further deteriorating public relations and workforce morale.

Their aggressive approach, charging high fees to restaurants while heavily discounting to attract consumers, also strained key relationships and drew criticism.

Anecdotally, the user base seemed to be pretty much exclusively expats, a tiny fraction of the market in Thailand, with most Thais preferring Lineman or Grab. This was mainly down to Foodpanda having English menus from day one, something Grab didn’t achieve until many years later and still hasn’t fully adopted. However, once their rivals started offering English-language options, a lot of Foodpanda’s loyal customer base moved over.

Foodpanda’s exit highlights crucial lessons about navigating a competitive market, appealing to the local demographic, being culturally and politically in tune, and the importance of balancing aggressive growth with long-term sustainability.

Good info.  Thanks for that.  I'm wondering if any of them are profitable yet.  Or are they all spending out the wazoo to get market share and hoping their competitors will run out of investor funds and drop out before they have to?  (Then they can finally jack up prices)

That seems to be a common story in online startups.  I watched it happen to dozens of rental bicycle startups here in China.  One by one, they ran out of investor cash and dropped out.  Now there's only a few left.

Grab is profitable https://www.nationthailand.com/business/corporate/40039232  But Lineman isn't, posting a loss of 253 million baht last year.'   https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/general/2877297/line-man-wongnai-unveils-marketing-push
