153k to 167k

My pension has risen by 20% in that 3 years, exchange rate same.

So my 153k + 20% = 184k Vs 167k

Essentially I'm 17kbht better off now, just on food.

 

Why don't people just stop buying products which increase in price?

 

So much of what people buy is not necessary.

 

So much of what people buy is downright unhealthy, too.

 

So, stop buying and live longer, so that you can spend more money shopping in your added years.

Anchor butter B 135 specials frequently drop down to B129 seen it as low as B125

Can't say I've noticed food inflation in Thailand exceeding my foreign income inflation though. I'm guessing they can't afford to push up Thai prices, as they'd force, loan defaults, starvation and maybe even civil unrest.

I buy Khao Chong Cappucino , formally at Big C. Prices were gradually creeping up from around 125 baht to 175 baht. I thought that was bad enough then overnight they put the price up to 200 !!  Too big a jump....just plain greed.

 

Result.....stopped buying that and several other items at Big C and now shop at the old town market where the same Khao Chong coffee is still only 160 baht.  If you don't mind going without the air con and a bit of eye candy you can cut your grocery bill significantly by shopping at the old style markets. This is especially true for vegetables... The only thing I can't get at the market is fine minced chicken carcass for the dogs.

Pork prices wayyyy down off of their highs.
Op gai (roast chicken) still 105 THB for whole chicken.
A bowl of noodles in pork broth with "red pork" still 25 THB in the village.
Vegetable - dirt cheap.  Plus what I grow myself is essentially free outside of the minimal cost of some 10/10/10 fertilizer.

Things like coffee and chocolate:  global prices dictate a lot of that cost.  Don't like the prices?  Stop buying the product.

who sets the price increase on items ....  is it CP  ?   the factory  ?   or the farmer  ?

 

have you noticed a sharp increase in stuff you buy  ?     I realize Makro & Tesco and others have increased slightly, which is indicative of inflation,   but I'm wondering why some prices have really escalated. 

Have you not noticed  that there is a major war on in the Ukraine which pushes up fuel and fertilizer, eggs hitting 14 dollars per dozen in NZ and fertilizer doubling in price pushing up vegetables globally, it's not just Thailand but is world wide. have a look at Macro and market village imported foods they are dearer than in the country they came from, not counting that the Thai govt is Taxing them to death as comfort foods as well.

 

The situation in NZ is so bad for pensioners that they are selling their homes , taking out reverse mortgages and moving into rest home villages as they can not afford food and petrol, rates, power and internet charges.

So, in 7 years your costs have gone about 16%.  That does not seem bad at all.

 

the food I buy at supermarkets is  expensive suddenly. many things have risen in price significantly. Coffee is just one example.  my hometown back home is looking very attractive right now. see you,

Exactly - if they push the prices too high too fast, they actually would risk "social unrest" that would make the Red and Yellow Shirt protests a decade or so back look like a walk in the park.  The average Thai can't absorb high inflation on top of their overleveraged debt loads.  The system would break.  In the US, on the other-hand, they just shuffle people onto the streets and claim they are all drug addicts as social assistance is reserved for "migrants."  I think that's eventually going to break as the Boomers die off, Millennials struggle, and Gen-Z can't find jobs no less live in the overpriced economy of today and their struggling Millennial parents don't have a basement for them to live it. 

Thailand though is already on the cusp of throwing society into a inflation induced death-spiral. Eventually s**t breaks.

All imported goods that I buy have gone up steeply (chocolate, waffles and other sweets, all kinds of cheese, air dried salami and other cold cuts). Lindt dark chocolate 84 in 2011, 160 yesterday.

For coffee I changed from imported Casino stuff to local whole beans.

No instant coffee for me.

Bakery products, cake, ...

6 simple croissants at BigC should cost 89, was some 36 to 40 years ago.

And also local meat (pork, beef, chicken) went up significantly.

Today the roast chicken was 150. Started at 100 some years ago.

 

Coffee and chocolate rising is not Thailand specific.

I live on a budget of 2,500 Baht a day even though my daily income is at least triple that. Many days I spend no more than 500 Baht in a day. Short time days are the only ones when I might exceed my daily budget. Usually I have lots of money left over at the end of the month. So much money, too much money. Always moneying, but not enough short timing.

I'm still buying Thai grown Sole for basically the same price as I bought it 6 months ago. (It has gone up 100 baht in increments since April of last year).  What does "basically" mean?  I typically purchase from "When Aroy", but sometimes they are out of stock. At those times, I look for the best price of the "Sole" brand 'mixed bean' coffee. It's near failed me in price and/or quality.

I just come back from shopping. My Loacker chocolate discs just went up from 88 to 108 Baht. Twenty Baht increase!

 

The Thai snap chocolate bar, up from 10 to 12 Baht.

 

I'm outraged.

 

Is it the Chinese? Are the Chinese behind this? 

In my case I think it has to do with anxiety.    I check my bank account, investments, real estate on Zillow, and get a round number.  Figure out some quick math, times it by 12, times that by whatever......look in the mirror, wonder if that will cover me until I die.  Then I have a budget.  for the last 10 years in Thailand, it's been fine....

 

When prices go up, this could be the beginning of much more.  That takes away from the number.  The big number.   Of course, down the road maybe social security is still a thing and all this anxiety means nothing because the extra SS money should easily be enough to cover a few percentages here and there.  It's not really a blip since I've seen the crazy inflation worldwide and Thailand is still renting out hotel rooms at pretty cheap prices save some big cities (not important to me at this time).   

 

it's not a top-5 concern, however.   not now.   talk to me when a small cup of rice and some pork costs 300 baht instead of 50-60.   I don't see that happening soon because it will destroy the masses......I don't know if minimum wage is still 300 baht a day, but I guess that needs to go way higher first...or not.  who knows.  

 

if my budget gets tighter, the number of sick buffalos I can help will go down, surely.
