I've taken Alprazolam (aka Xanax) in past. It gave me some weird dreams 75% of the times that I used it. That stopped me off from asking for more.

In Thailand, they sell the benadryl as a 50 mg pill.  That's Very strong. They usually recommend 25-50 mg for sleeping But I would recommend that you first try a lower dosage of 10-15 mg.  You can easily break the 50 mg tablets in half giving you 25 mg and then take a knife or scissors and cut off a piece to get a lower dosage.  Less is better especially if you want to avoid the next morning hangover effects.

@NoshowJones Lorazepam is a narcotic, no different that diazepam / Valiums, and may be illegal to carry through international airports without permission.

Tell me about it.  I used Zolpidem (Ambien) for about 6 weeks, because I was on some medication that made it impossible for me to sleep.  Well, the rebound insomnia was worse than the original insomnia.  Took me almost 3 months to wean off even only 5mg a night pills.  Never again.

Melatonin: there would be no point counterfeiting it as does not really work. The time you tried it and you thought it worked that was just psychosomatic. Try 1/2 grams = one or two grammes of Ativan. They come in two gram pills which you can cut in half.  You can even get them legally from the hospital or pharmacy with a prescription to carry with you.

It works for many people (me included)

 

It does not "knock you out", it just helps produce a natural sleepiness. People whose insomnia is tied to anxiety often find it does help, because they are looking for something that overcomes the anxiety.

 

Melatonin is particularly helpful for sleep problems related to melatonin levels e.g. jet lag and middle of the night/ early morning wakefulness in the elderly

 

Ativan is lorazepam, a benzo and a tranquilizer.  Already discussed in this thread. There are many brands here besides Ativan (which I think is going off market). Like all benzos, addictive if taken regularly, and a controlled substance here.

I was given, by a doctor,  Hydroxyzine for itchiness.

Just take IT ONCE for the journey then you need not worry about addiction! Have a glass of brandy with it- live a little- turn your journey into a party!

You can buy it here at many pharmacys.  You don't need a doctors' Rx.  Most antihistamines will work for itching.

I'm struck by how many people rely on sleeping tablets.

 

And I say that without judgement - I count myself among them.

 

I’ve tried melatonin, but it doesn’t do much when I’m truly struggling to sleep. Some nights, no matter what I do, rest just refuses to come.

 

Two nights ago, I managed a solid, unaided sleep - rare and wonderful. But then last night, I lay awake until 7am. I finally drifted off and slept to midday, only to wake with tired, heavy eyes that have stayed with me all day.

 

I used to take Xanax, Valium or other benzodiazepines when flying. I swear by them. I remember one flight a few years back - a 2am departure on a flatbed seat. I had a drink, took a benzo, and told the flight attendant to skip breakfast and just wake me with coffee at the last possible moment - the best way to fly !

 

These medications don’t knock me out cold. If I need to get up - say for the loo - I can do so without issue. But they do reliably bring on a proper, uninterrupted night’s rest.

 

I haven’t taken anything for a couple of months now. I’m very  cautious of the risk of dependency or habitual use.

 

That said, tonight I’ll be taking a Clonazepam. I’ve had enough of tossing and turning for weeks on end.

 

I don't experience the so-called 'morning brain fog' that some report. I've also experimented with marijuana, which does help - but I can’t use it regularly due to THC lingering in fat cells and showing up in drug screenings, which I occasionally have to do for work.

 

 

One concern that stays with me is the mental health aspect of long-term sleep medication use. I suspect these drugs suppress REM sleep - the stage where we dream. And without dreams, without that nightly psychological reset, I wonder what toll is quietly taken on the mind over time.

My Thai family Thai son and his Thai wife both very well educated (and 4 kids) are very careful about using any medications.

 

Son's old school buddy is a doctor at one of the bigger hospitals here in Chiang Mai. Son called him 20 minutes ago and asked 'is Melatonin banned or restricted, does patient need a document to buy it?' Dr. said 'let me check and I'll call you back'.

 

Then the return call:

- Yes it was restricted about 3 years back but after perhaps 3 months the restriction was withdrawn.

- He also shared, the Health ministry website re medicines is vague and confusing on this item and it seems that the restriction was never justified.

- Dr. called a friend (a qualified / experienced pharmacist, snr. professional staff member at a big serious Pharma chain in Thailand, he confirmed the restriction was imposed then quickly removed several years back.

 

I've bought Melatonin several times on LINE shopping sites in the last 2 or 3 years. No mention of restrictions.

I use Imovane 7,5 mg if needed.If i go on a holiday ex 3 months i get 100 pills from my doctor.

I also bring the papers i need for the bordercontrol if i get checked.So far they never checked me.

Since my first trip to Thailand in 2001 i never been stopped after passport control.
