When was the last time that you spoke with a foreigner?

Asking those who live in Thailand....

 

The last time that I spoke with a 'farang' was about 4 weeks ago when I said 'thank-you' to a young Russian guy who held the lift for me in my Jomtien condo building.  I don't go out of my way to socialise with foreigners in Thailand because most seem to be pot-heads, 'hidden' nutters (who seem quite sociable at first, but then reveal themselves as totally mad), or those many grumpy old men who seem to be suffering from dementia.

 

Otherwise, I seem only to interact with Thais 🙂on a daily basis.  None seem to be pot-heads, the nutters are quite vocal and easily avoided, and I always get a smile from the old folk when I give them a cheery 'sawadee kap'.

 

How about you.  Do you live in a farang bubble?  Or a Thai bubble for that matter?

I don't live in any bubble. I have lots of Thai family and friends. I speak with them on a daily basis. I occasionally go out to a small place where I know there might be expats having a beer. If there are some there, I'll speak to them. If not, no problem. I don't go out of my way to either speak to or avoid expats.

I've been living in the same house over 20 years, back in the day it was RARE to find a nutter, these days most foreigners are aggressive, hostile fruitcakes. 

 

I've got a few very good close foreigner friends, I don't need or want any more. 

 

The trick is, if you find a normal one hang on to him.

Why are they "totally mad"? Are they all murderers?

I have to admit, teaching in Chanthaburi, I am about the only foreigner out here. I occasionally see a fellow farang at Big C, but we don't offer any kind of recognition.

 

During school breaks, I travel to Jomtien/Pattaya and get together with my farang friends. I never feel lonely, I'm too damned busy for that. It works for me for now, and when it doesn't, I will change my situiation.

First I give them the disrespectful glare!!!!  Shame on you for not working, lazy farangs!!!!!  Then I take their picture and give them the sex pat look of disgust!!!!   I'll speak Thai and flash my 5 baht gold chain!!!!     Eye contact only for 0.000004 seconds, then shake your head as if you have just seen the worst human on Earth.  Stare at their tattoos, shake head again!!!!   Elephant pants, laugh!!  Dirty hippy hair, laugh!!!   This is a great way to make friends and influence people.  We are social creatures, so it's nice to see the great evolution of the insecure farang.  

 

I stopped worrying about all this rubbish in my 30's.  Yea, shame of me it took that long.   I'll comment because it cracks me up.

 

Another massive time waster is worrying about America when you grew up in (name any place outside of America).   You won't get an American passport just because America lives in your head 24/7.   

 

Again, Buddhism.  Relax....and remember, they are likely mocking you as well.   Hey, remember that bitter falang???!!?!?!

What does a pothead seem to be like? All those I've ever known were amicable, happy people who like to be sociable. Many locals are potheads also, and most I've seen are drinkers. Hard to tell who are nutters until they go off, and many of the most dangerous types aren't drug or alcohol users but unstable already.

Last spoke with a farang yesterday - a short 2-3 minute chat.

 

I prefer to chat with some Thais, they seem more interesting than the constantly complaining expats I frequently encounter.

This may be off topic but the most English I have spoken lately was with a Thai person who refused to wear a swimsuit but insisted on getting into our nice mooban pool in street clothes.

And continued to do this as before 8 AM there is no staff to tell them otherwise. Just this farang. And wasn't going to do ANYTHING because some farang said so. I finally got to the point of "What part of that 'swimwear required in the pool' sign is troubling you?" -- to which I let out a series of crude invectives that I haven't used in decades.

Problem was eventually solved when someone from staff informed them swimwear no street clothes in the pool or stay out.

I mean, as soon as I point out ne that has done something stupid or behaved bad, then I get called out for that, and some members here jump on my posts and replies. As we can see, most are pot-heads, nutters or grumpy people with dementia. This is just childish!  None of the people you are talking about have done anything wrong that you can point out. You just have a weird opinion about foreigners as a whole.

To answer you question in the topic. I don´t live in any kind of bubble. On a daily basis, I interact with several Thais as well as foreigners. None of them seem to be any nutters or suffer from dementia. Neither are they grumpy. I don´t get it, but you must live in one of the worst locations in Thailand, to get such weird understanding about people in general.

I find a lot of farangs ignore me but I am very popular with the bar girls. Maybe because they are all half nutters and on stuff as well and I tip well?

Have a few farang friends in cm, all polite folks, the last time I seen any of them was about four or five weeks ago, run into them while in the city where most live. On average maybe six to eight times a year and always turn into long conversations, like two-three hours. Most English speaking strangers are polite though I avoid smokers and drunks.

Yeah, that is one of the places that are know for attracting all kinds of people. That will say both Thais and foreigners of all kind and shapes. I live like more out in the sticks. The whole province has a population of about 500 000 people. Actually quite a lot of foreigners around. Most seem to be sensible, have something to talk about, having fun, sitting down taking a beer now and then in different places and sometimes we go out eat together. But, on the other hand, that goes for a lot of Thais I know too, and we also socialize foreigners and Thais sometimes. It´s like a regular and normal nice and calm life.

As you say, I would not make it in Pattaya either. Can be fun to now and then just visit for a couple of days up to a week. After that, I am overloaded with too much of everything. Just want to go back home to the sticks and have the regular nice and friendly people around.

many of us are not isolated - we live in Thailand with Thai people and families... we speak Thai - and have conversations with real and thoughtful and caring people... and we don't discriminate against or dislike people because they may have a disease that we don't... I have a diabetic neighbor who is 45 kilos - - you want to make fun of her too?
