"Another xxxxxxx person smuggling cannabis out of Thailand?"

Whats with ANYONES mind lately. It doesn't look like it is dumb "kids" on a free holiday trip, "If you do this little favor for me", especially with the weight transported.

I really don't get it.

Why hazard smuggling weed by the kilo from Thailand to UK, when they could simply truck a ton of it over (or under) from Holland?  The Dutch know how to grow high THC weed as well.

Not that there aren't grow houses well established in the UK.

Can someone please explain why ?  Seriously.

While that seems like the most likely scenario, if I was a bent baggage handler, I may be tempted to load some weed into some random bags and let my baggage handler buddy on the other end know which bag it's in.

4 times in the past 2 years, I've had a sticker on my checked bag indicating that BKK opened it for a security inspection.

I don't understand how these bags can pass the X-ray security checks before being loaded onto the plane in Thailand.

Trying to take kilos of weed in your bags risks you getting caught on departure and arrival. So this clown decides to have two stopovers in Australia and Germany providing two more potential bags scans.

I suppose getting caught in Vienna has some benefits. An Austrian prison would be considered a far more humane and preferable environment compared to a Thai prison.

Stopover with drugs in your suitcase....I read this all the time....how dumb can you be.

Why don't you spend more money on a ticket if you want to bring drugs over.

100 SEEDS is all these idiots need. Drop ship from Amsterdam. Doesn't anyone work anymore?

What a plonker...

This is out of control now. The absolute garbage reputation Thailand is taking with international headlines like this is out of control. This was once a proud country that the world respected for it's hard stance on drugs. It's honestly becoming the gutter with all the headlines.

Surely they need to be better detection at their home airports. Second, they really need to seriously look again at the marijuana laws bought in. Already i know many chinese tourists, families, decent folk looking to other places like Vietnam as they don't like whats going in Thailand.

More like the "absolute garbage reputation of British travelers" to me. They've been nailed in Georgia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and now Austria.

Unfortunately, for the moment, cannabis can legally be bought in Thailand for consumption in Thailand. Where does that suggest that it is OK to take masses of it back home? Would this guy have ever considered bringing some hashish from Amsterdam, where the local purchase and consumption is legal?

The low IQ of a certain British traveling demographic has absolutely nothing to do with Thailand.

Not clear as to why this is unfortunate

I am sure that is done put the prices in Holland are just a tad more than in Thailand.

Maybe people get talked into it over here? They may have overspent and decide to take the gamble.

I talked to a UK citizen last week and he said he was planning to take Cannabis back to the UK but he did not say how much.

He made it sound like it was not a big deal.

So weed is a very dangerous thing in Newcastle but not in Thailand?

With respect, not dangerous but ILLEGAL in Newcastle!

The suspect was caught with the cannabis cleverly concealed in 13 vacuum-sealed packs, hidden beneath layers of clothing in his suitcase

Criminal mastermind. Absolute genius. I bet nobody else has ever thought of that. How on earth did they ever find it?.....

You might well find that the sentences for smuggling this amount of cannabis can potentially be very light in the UK and mainland Europe. The risk vs reward equation may mean people will continue to do it.

A suspended sentence was given out recently for a suitcase full of weed from Thailand. Money equivalent to grafting on a building site for 2 years vs a suspended sentence may well be an attractive proposition.

That sentence sent a really awful example. Floodgates would have opened after that.

Only loss would be the money from the cannabis. But i am assuming most of these people are just mules.

No idea how these are getting past thai x-rays.

However, they are going third party routes as Europe is targetting flights from Thailand. I was told by an agent in both Amsterdam and London, that extra checks are placed on Thailand flights due to the volume of marijuana being smuggled.

Oh nonsense. The bad reputation is the customs and police who arrest the smugglers and users in the UK and USA etc. It's time cannabis was decriminalised in ALL nations. Stop wasting police time.

No prison is more appropriate for cannabis. I'm not sure if they imprison people anymore in Thailand for mere Cannabis; they have seen sense & so should other CIVILISED nations.

Seeds require 3 months of attention, grow equipment, electricity costs and the worry of getting your front door kicked in.

Dutch weed is not cheap and takes a lot of organisation i should imagine.

Thai weed is cheap, simple to put in a bag and the return is big, around £3,500 a kg i'm led to believe.

Thailand getting a bad rep? (read headline again). I think most of us intelligent people are thinking what an idiot for smuggeling this <deleted>!   You can't blame Thailand for someone being stupid and greedy!

If guilty don't you think he should sit in jail?  Or just blame thailand for making it legal and not asking him at the departure lounge if he stuffed his suitcase with weed.

So do you think this improves Thailand's reputation? A country that previously had some of the toughest drug laws is now a magnet for pot heads, and is becoming THE place to smuggle weed from.

If you think that's good for a country's global image you must be smoking something.

The traveller's bags get flagged by Thai security for interception at the next airport. Happened to me in 2022 when I checked an acquaintance into my case from Bangkok to Heathrow. E-gate wouldn't work on arrival. Went to desk and within seconds, customs officers were there. Escorted to retrieve baggage and full inspection for 1 hour. Intensely and repetitively questioned. They were interested in my dead friend's ashes. I saw the x-ray. Showed as orange organic matter. They never opened the package - I did say "he won't complain" and I had all the papers such as death certificate, cremation papers, his passport etc. They then told me I was free to go. I asked the officer if they were tipped off by Bangkok (they clearly were), but she replied "I couldn't say".
