And why are there people here still defending it? I understand most of you have your own corner stores which will sell you some or you stock up in advance. But i like to go on trips around the country and it would be alot better if every 7-11 would allow me to buy a beer when i wanted it. It also seems like lose lose for everyone involved. They will legalize weed and casinos and try everything to get more tourists BUT no we are not degenerate enough to sell alcohol 24 7 even though everybody drinks and drives during all hours of the day regardless

Its stems from the need to have the labor force semi coherent and going to work rather than sitting around pissed all day. Its not effective but gives the Thai appearance of doing something which is normal

I wish they would bring back the old rider on the sales hours which said you could buy "wholesale quantities" outside hours.

 

IIRC it was buy 10 litres or more at any time, so 2 slabs of 24 x 320ml cans (15.36 litres) was just fine. I did have to educate some Tesco-Lotus checkout girls on the finer points of the law.

The same law applied to bars and off-licences (liquor stores) in UK from the First World War to avoid munitions workers getting pissed at lunchtime I believe. Unfortunately nobody worked out the war was over until more than 70 years later when the entire country switched from pubs to French style bistros overnight. 

This is all excessively silly in Thailand where the tourists can't buy a drink but all the locals ignore these silly restrictions. Don't ask me I don't give a damn next stop is Vietman - I can't remember who said that, of course I'm far too young.

Yes the UK used to have similar laws - not sure about shops/supermarkets - but pubs and restaurants had similar daily afternoon closures or  laws banning alcohol during certain hours. The stated reason for the introduction of them around WWI was to ensure the workers returned to their jobs after lunch (munitions factories or whatever). UK abandoned the afternoon closures around 25 years ago. I think Thailand has them for similar reasons and to inhibit all day drinking. But, yeah, it's a nuisance if you go to the supermarket in the afternoon and can't buy beer or wine.
