In an unexpected turn of events, former Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat fired back at Thailand’s Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa today. Criticising Maris for advocating actions "outside the rules," Pita called for utilising the Asean Regional Forum to address the Thai-Cambodian tensions.

His remarks come on the heels of controversial statements made by Maris to diplomats, urging them to prioritise national interests even if it meant bending international principles.

Pita took to his social media platform to voice concerns over the current geopolitical climate, insisting that non-superpowers should remain steadfast in their adherence to international norms.

In a decisive move, Pita announced he would disconnect his internet following his statement, heightening the drama. His concern revolves around avoiding further confrontation on the Thai-Cambodian border and initiating talks through a peaceful and diplomatic approach.

Notably proactive, Pita has been in touch with various diplomatic experts across the Asean region. He advocates for de-escalation and a temporary resolution that allows both nations to step back without losing face.

The upcoming Asean Regional Forum (ARF) meeting in Malaysia, set to happen next month, is seen by Pita as a crucial opportunity for discussion.

The ARF, established in 1994, serves as a crucial space for "preventive diplomacy" to avert potential conflicts.

It operates under the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), promoting peaceful resolutions and the prohibition of force. Pita’s call highlights the importance of utilising such platforms, even as some question Asean's overall effectiveness.

In a poignant point, Pita expressed disbelief over the timing of Maris's comments, notably occurring just a month before the ARF meeting. He emphasises the need for a strong international narrative from Thailand akin to Cambodia's focus on the International Court of Justice. Pita believes that through legitimate and universal principles, peaceful solutions can be achieved without compromising on national integrity.
