Phuket Airport is ramping up security following the discovery of a bomb in an abandoned motorcycle. Passengers should now arrive at least two hours early for their flights due to these increased measures.

The device was found on Wednesday night, June 25, by airport security and successfully defused by bomb experts. The motorcycle that concealed the explosive was left abandoned, triggering a swift response from authorities. This incident is part of a worrying pattern, as two additional bombs were also safely disabled at Promthep Cape and Patong Beach.

To ensure safety, all abandoned motorcycles at the airport have been relocated to the Sakhu Police Station. Owners need to present their vehicle registration and ID to retrieve their bikes. Passengers are urged to comply with all security directives while moving through the airport.

The security overhaul follows the arrest of two suspects, Sulaiman Kacha and Muhama Wadeng, in Phang Nga province’s Mueang district on Tuesday. Both are residents of Pattani province and are suspected of being involved with the explosives found at the airport and nearby areas.

On June 26, security forces conducted raids at four different locations in Mae Lan district, Pattani. This action was prompted by evidence found on Sulaiman’s mobile phone, which allegedly contained a video of him practicing shooting in an orchard owned by a man named Ismael and his son Muhammad. The raid resulted in the apprehension of Muhammad and two other suspects, but Ismael remains on the run.

Authorities are continuing to question the suspects to understand the full scope of their plans. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the discovery of the bombs has raised concerns in the community. Officials are urging everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.

Travelers to Phuket should remain cautious and allow for extended time to go through security checks. With ongoing investigations and a heightened state of alert, planning for additional time at the airport is essential.
