when you are fluent in Thai and go to school here, then i'll take the question seriously.   I just saw a Russian screaming about something in Pattaya a 2 a.m.   Time for a new thread?

  • No different than the immature adults in the country that you’re from.

Being the great sports and fitness and travel expert you would have thought that a regular visitor/semi resident of Chiang Mai would have known about the very famous 700 year old stadium!

I do not disagree with the above but my question was "why do you have to use a Gym"?

You don't, as you can use body weight in many exercises to stay in shape. A gym is good because of three things. You pay and you'll usually go, and when you go you'll see others working out and are motivated by that. Otherwise it's self motivation in another setting without others. Some will pay and never go but we're talking about those who want gains. two, a gym has everything you need to work al muscle groups, and safely if you use just machines. Three, it's air conditioned(usually) and it's easier to work out in that environment, especially with weights.

If you ever go to Chiang Mai try GoGym 60 baht and large. Chiang Mai is the best walking city in Thailand too. Stay in hotel, walk to gym, workout, walk to Old City, have shake, walk back to hotel.

Missing from what? My children in the US are adults, with families and careers. Thailand is also a land of almost daily mass shootings.

When was the last one Fred?

If I ever go to Chiang Mai before I move it will be to see the tribe people outside the city, along with the old city. Not much else here I'd like to see as i did a few beaches, parks, temples, Kanchanaburi and Bangkok.

May 30. I'll expect another one within a month, if not more.

Chiang Dao and Chiang Rai are fairly good.

I went for a massage  half way through the session  a Thai guy comes in to the next massage stall , he gets a phone call!

You be the judge!

Did he proceed to have his phone conversation on speaker phone?

Did that upset you?

It all is the same to me. Once you've seen many villages and cities, you've seen what most look like, what they have, temples, food, mountains, woods. The only thing I'd like to see is more wildlife, but it's mostly in provincial parks and hard to locate.

Do you understand the difference between daily and monthly?

Well at the gym it seems like many do the following:

1) Look at themselves in the mirror  at least once every 5 minutes

2) Take a selfie and then more selfies

3)  After walking on the threadmill like a grandma for 10 minutes  they act like they had just run a marathon

4)  Not wipe down gym equipment after use. But actually why would they need to wipe it down because they do not sweat.  It takes some level of intensity to perspire while working out.

5) Sit on gym equipment while looking at their phones while others are politely waiting. I thought going to the gym was to get a workout and not working out their phones.

6) Obviously this type of behavior does not apply to all Thai men but I have witnessed it many times during the years.

Or I am the weird one because I leave my phone in the locker.  The gyms I belonged to in the  US prohibited phones on the gym floor. Oh heck in the eyes of most Thai people I am weird one.

I doubt this kind of behavior would be tolerated at a Muay Thai dojo but the mid to high level gyms I have worked out at this is rather common amongst Thai men.

What's a threadmill?

Go to Sri Lanka.

Do you understand the difference between exaggerating a little to make a point? I'd be willing to bet there are more than is reported also, as the news here leaves a lot to be desired.

Malaysia, Europe, Australia and Africa are still on my bucket list, and I'll do Malaysia before I move home.

Then why did you say that people had to use a gym?

The ones I know certainly do; but I can't say the same for many farang especially Americans, British, Australians, Russians etc. What a childish question to ask!

Why limit you childish response to just the above countries or include them in the first place?

Go to Khao Sok NP too.

Or are they all just a bunch of petulant adult man-children? Serious question...

it's not politically correct to say so, but I've always found all people in SE Asia, with few exceptions, to be somewhat naive, child-like and innocent. A bit like children. Especially the women actually.

I find it endearing.

I didn't. A gym makes things easier but it isn't mandatory to work out.

From the US are we.

You voted in a president that many outside the US are wondering about his emotional maturity?

Twice.

it is not just Thais who think you are weird.

We don’t care what lame Euros think.

Serious answer:  grow up, your comment is totally infantile. Plenty of Thai men in my own extended family and students in my uni classes over many years (bachelor age group and masters age group and those I have coached to gain heir Ph.D.) who are emotionally very balanced and full of mature respect.

What's your next beef - too much chily...

GoGym is not near the old city but is out on the Super Highway and is not in normal walking distance of the old city!

GOGYM Chiangmai | Chiang Mai | Facebook

And visit the 700 Year old Stadium while you are in CM, it is well signposted for those that visit CM.

The thing you can walk or run on with less knee pain. Sorry for the spelling error.

If only that were true. I've had to contend with a pool of sweat left by Thai men more than once over the years. Some of them train in sweat suits to induce sweating, even with low-intensity exercise.

My best solution has been my home gym for the last 12 years. None of the above problems, with lots of other advantages.

You know I wish I could have such a place but I am looking at the end of the LOS road for me and maybe I am suffering from Thai fatigue?  8 years and some good times but some bad experiences.  Lately all of my contacts with the Thai people have been brief.  I realize everyones Thai experience will be different but for me the first 2 to 3 years were good but the last few have not been so great.

I have never seen anyone at my current gym wear a sweat suit.  We have a sauna for that. Most mornings I am about the only one who uses it.  It's almost like paraise for me in the sauna. Most of the Thai members do not grab a rag and wipe down machines because most fo the them do not sweat.
