A neighbourhood dispute over a pet bird has ended in a horrific shooting on Koh Lanta, Krabi province, leaving a father and his one-year-old daughter dead and the mother injured.

 

The incident occurred at around 11:30 on 1 july, in the Koh Lanta Noi subdistrict. Police Lieutenant Pimol Promcharoen, deputy investigator at Koh Lanta Police Station, responded to reports of a shooting at a private residence. Officers arrived at the scene with forensic investigators and a crowd of distressed neighbours already gathered.

 

At the scene, the body of Mr. Apiwat 37, was found by the front door of his home. He had been shot through the left arm, with the bullet exiting into his chest and piercing his heart. Apiwat worked as a taxi driver, transporting tourists around Koh Lanta.

 

Two others were rushed to Koh Lanta Hospital. Ms. Sudarat 28, the victim’s wife, sustained a gunshot wound to her right arm. Their young daughter, aged just over one year, identified only as ‘Gai’, died shortly after arrival at hospital from a gunshot wound to the head.

 

Police recovered eight spent 9mm bullet casings from the road outside the house, along with several intact rounds.

 

The suspect, identified as Mr. Wiwat 41, lived directly opposite the victims. After the shooting, he reportedly fled the scene on a black-and-blue Yamaha R15 motorcycle. A manhunt is currently underway.

 

According to local residents, the deadly dispute stemmed from a pet Mynah bird owned by the alleged shooter. A few days prior, the bird escaped its cage and was unknowingly captured by another villager, who later sold it to Mr. Apiwat. When Mr. Wiwat discovered that his pet had been sold, he confronted Apiwat and demanded its return. An argument ensued, reportedly escalating with threats and heated words exchanged.

 

On the morning of the shooting, it is believed the two men had another confrontation. In a fit of rage, Mr. Wiwat allegedly retrieved a firearm and opened fire, striking Apiwat, his wife and their baby daughter.

 

Police continue to search for the suspect, urging anyone with information to come forward.
