Children at Ban Kham Pha-Ung School in Roi Et had an unforgettable day when a Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) helicopter made an unexpected landing on their school field.

The chopper, travelling from Lopburi to Udon Thani, was forced to land due to severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds. The event unfolded on Thursday afternoon, July 3, causing excitement and awe among students and staff.

Footage of the helicopter’s descent, accompanied by the children’s thrilled screams, quickly spread online. The landing, executed with precision, became a local spectacle as villagers and parents rushed to the scene, braving the rain to capture photos of the rare occurrence.

The pilots were met with the community's signature warmth and were honoured with a bai sri su kwan ceremony to bless and thank them for their safe handling of the situation.

Teachers seized the opportunity as a teachable moment, allowing the children to interact with the crew and learn about aviation.

The pilots engaged with the students, taking pictures and answering their questions, ensuring everyone felt safe and informed about the unexpected event.

Remarkably, there were no injuries, and the helicopter was unharmed, allowing the crew to eventually continue their journey once the weather improved.

This abrupt yet thrilling event provided the schoolchildren with a memorable experience.

The episode was summed up perfectly by a young student’s comment: “I never thought I’d see a real helicopter land in front of me!” With smiles all around, it’s a day the school won’t soon forget.

I'm glad the helicopter was unharmed and the crew undamaged. Seems like the old Mil Mi-17 (I think this is what it is) couldn't handle the weather.

If the drivers took off their sun glasses it might help

They were kneeling because they were taller than the boys …

Thanks. My mistake. I guess the Mi 17 is not equipped for instrument flying.

Hey.

Wearing sunglasses is cool.

But totally unnecessary.

Off the topic of helicopters landing in Thailand...

When I was in the Texas National Guard, I hopped a ride between Houston and San Antonio, Texas.   During the flight the helicopter landed in a cow pasture and the pilot got out then walked off to the left of the helicopter.   I'm sitting inside thinking, why the heck did we land here?   I leaned over to see where the pilot went to and there he was, watering (pissing on) the grass in the pasture (would pissing make it past the censure?)

I could see the ranch house off about 1/4 mile out the right side door as the pilot reentered the helicopter and curious if the occupants had seen the helicopter landing and taking off.

Russian equipment.

The  Mi-17V-5 helicopters were delived;

3 in  March 2011,

2 in December  2017

2 in December 2018

3 in March 2021

for a total of 10 used for general transport and  relief efforts.

The helicopters should be able to handle rough weather. Perhaps there is now a standing order to land when the climate is fierce so that there are not repeat  tragedies.

No, definitely a Mi-17V-5 of the Royal Thai Army

Yeah a great day with the helicopter!

Just wait until they have to draw lots for conscription
