In a way a sad photo of a family that might struggle to get financial ends to meet.

Could be,   but knowing Thais they probably could have walked to where they went.  but they'd rather risk the lives of their kids than ever walk somewhere.

According to the Thai news they got arrested this is the best bit they were on the way to the garage to pick up their car, now it makes even less sense to have 7 on the bike, here's all of us feeling sorry for them only having a bike

buying a Television would have been cheaper in the long run

( was always a standard answer back in the day ..   why do they have so many children ?   No televison to watch at night )

Why is this even written as 'shocking'?

It is  generally a daily sight, give or take a kid or so, all over Thailand.

The sheer lack of an effective police force, rather than a money collecting agency, doesn't help.

The problem is the sheer lack of a reasonable & rational distribution of incomes.

Also a sheer lack of concern for life and the lives of others, especially in your own family.

They aren’t a danger to anyone but themselves.  What people should be complaining about are the drivers who speed and weave and tailgate and cut through traffic.  They are a danger and must be punished severely.

They are also a danger to other drivers. If someone hits them, they might get the blame, especially if there are no witnesses or CCTV and they have those on the bike saying they weren't at fault.

That is why I have a dash cam in my car, front and back.
