Do You Avoid Other Foreigners You Meet in Thailand?

Featured Replies

Lot of long-termers tend to be misfits/odd and Thais are a bit blind to it, and put it down to "ting-tong foreigner ways"

I find the older ones are the worst, with their predictable chat, how long you been here, know everything, done everything, alcoholics, best avoided

  • Like the plague.

When COVID19 came in and I told friends back in US that we are told to practice social distancing in Thailand, they said: You should be good at social distancing. You've been practicing that for years.

  • Popular Post

Don't avoid them, just rarely meet them.

I don't drink, so don't frequent bars to meet many of the ones that live here full time. Most in the gym are transient tourists, much younger than me, nothing in common and usually gone in a week or two.

Depends their accent. Brit/UK or Aussie accents - head down, pray to Buddha they don't try to start a conversation.

You mean the bar girls?🙃🙃

I must have resting grump face, I seldom get approached by falangs.

When staying for a couple of months in a hotel a few years ago I talked to a some farangs in the restaurant.

One was a Scottish guy who was interesting, he was a tourist so only here for a month or so, mostly they were ok but not really interesting people.

But I am seldom just hanging out for long periods of time and putting myself at risk for meetings with weirdos.

I talk to some of the guys who live in my building.

This is a fairly expensive condo so no desperados are trying to stay here.

The neighbor hood is upscale, the little faux cul de sac (road goes around a little lake with ingress/egress at both sides so not really a cul de sac) is all single family homes, mansions to me. So no layabouts hanging around on the street.

There are farangs at work but everyone is busy and no time and also seems like no desire to chat or socialize. Maybe 10 falangs at work, I only know the name of 1 guy.

There are many social occasions where  wonderful talks can  and do happen.

The British Club of Bangkok is a gathering point for English speakers . The membership fees keep the riff raff away.

The Royal Sports Club of Bangkok attracts some of the  hisos of   the region. No yobs are allowed in.

The various trade and cultural associations such as Japan/Thailand, and German/Thailand put on some nice social events. There are several charity fundraisers and associated events that allow for interesting socializing.

I am this locales token, and beloved, white honky. If I see others it makes me mad.

Bad jokes aside, I'm two for two, both were loons, who after 20 minutes were dissing their partners, their partners family and habits, their acquaintances and Siam in general.

They were not good humans.

Looks like you’re carrying a boomer-sized chip on your shoulder there, fella...

I know plenty of solid, decent blokes - ranging from their mid-20s to late 60s - and not a single one fits into the narrow, self-serving stereotype you’ve conjured up.

The sweeping generalisation you’re so eager to shoehorn in is tired, lazy, and frankly, a bit ridiculous.

There are plenty of idiots across all age groups. No generation has a monopoly on stupidity. The one-size-fits-all generalisation you’re trying to peddle just doesn’t hold up. It’s lazy thinking dressed up as insight.

Quite the post… and yes, it perfectly illustrates the point: no generalisation or stereotype truly holds water - despite the efforts of some to dress up their lack of thoughtful insight, like claiming there are more young troublemakers than old fools, as some sort of wisdom.

Since you are name dropping in an attempt to be superior, my favourite event is the Oxford University and Cambridge University annual Christmas dinner each December in Bangkok.

Most attendees are high ranking Thais.

No riff-raff there.

Are you feeling OK, chap......?

I usually politely greet guys I meet in Makro or Tops. I don't seek them out but I will say good morning etc. I don't engage with them but I don't avoid them.

If the guy happens to be India, extremely rare, I say "Sorry about the cricket" and continue an my way.
