How often do you hear song lyrics you consider profound?

Well if you all insist on doing old stuff, here is Amsterdam. By Bowie as the original is in French and not allowed to post.

In the port of Amsterdam, there's a sailor who dies
Full of beer, full of cries in a drunken town fight
In the port of Amsterdam, there's a sailor who's born
On a hot muggy morn by the dawn's early light

In the port of Amsterdam, where the sailors all meet
There's a sailor who eats only fish heads and tails
And he'll show you his teeth that have rotted too soon
That can haul up the sails, that can swallow the moon

And he yells to the cook with his arms open wide
"Hey! Bring me more fish, throw it down by my side"
And he wants so to belch but he's too full to try
So he stands up and laughs and he zips up his fly

In the port of Amsterdam, you can see sailors dance
Paunches bursting their pants, grinding women to porch
They've forgotten the tune that their whiskey voice croaked
Splitting the night with the roar of their jokes
And they turn and they dance and they laugh and they lust
Till the rancid sound of the accordion bursts
And then out of the night with their pride in their pants
And the sluts that they tow underneath the street lamps

In the port of Amsterdam, there's a sailor who drinks
And he drinks and he drinks and he drinks once again
He'll drink to the health of the whores of Amsterdam
Who've given their bodies to a thousand other men
Yeah, they've bargained their virtue, their goodness all gone
For a few dirty coins, well, he just can't go on
Throws his nose to the sky and he aims it up above
And he pisses like I cry on the unfaithful love
In the port of Amsterdam
In the port of Amsterdam

Indeed but as an in depended artist  he sure makes waves. First in the charts and right now at silver with the albumSick Boy. Notice that the OP starts complaining about no new good liricks and when you give it, it's ignored. Others like Maga Yagoda need to show his inability of reading (and others) by flooding 50 years old songs.

It is true theres sparse quality around these days thats original compared to the past 50 years or more good lyricists, when the music factory industry didnt churn out pure  dross with plastic pretty boy n girls to peddle it... but theres  still some around it just takes a bit more effort than turning on the MSM radio,  a lot of it on smaller modern  & tech platforms but it take time and interest to find it. I guess some old farts are incapable or stuck in a bubble of their own making .. . Oh well their loss not ours

Push & Pull by Nikki Costa is the one that last moved me.

Mr. Nothing's got a lot
He's got a lot to say
He's good at being what he's not
Gives nothing away
Another day goes on by
And he never speaks his heart
He takes his chance with what he's got
It's too late now to stop

You push and you pull and struggle with the knot
It's tying you up while you're fadin'
You give and you take and take what you got
'Round and 'round 'till it breaks and
You push and you pull and struggle with the knot
It's tying you up while you're fadin' into your lie

Mr. Nothing is late
He's running out of time
He questions whether chance or fate will ever show a sign
Looks to the sky above
For a glimpse of what it means
And now or never, never made
Made more sense to him

You push and you pull and struggle with the knot
It's tying you up while you're fadin'
You give and you take and take what you got
'Round and 'round 'till it breaks and
You push and you pull and struggle with the knot
It's tying you up while you're fadin' into your lie
You push and you pull it

Again. You must hate this forum to endanger it multiple times a day with your stealing of other peoples work.

Probably the best lyric writer & original Artist  currently around from the UK .. & a lovely bloke but very much a victim of life & the streets. Dare anyone to listen to these songs and the lyrics and not be utterly blown away at the rawness & honesty  in then..

Ren wont ever be massive though, wont  bow to the big boys demands nor play their games .. Much respect

Extreme talent but your right he will never be massive.  I would rarely listen to his music alone but would love to see him perform live with a group of friends.  His acting is next level.

Some 35 years ago i called in on a friend and his wife and while sitting in the lounge room talking, they had a famous operatic pieces playing in the background.  I was not taking any notice of the music until a particular piece started playing and i was transfixed with the beauty of the music and the voices.   The piece was the famous Male Duet from the "Pearl Fishers".    I had never heard it before but by the end of the duet i unashamedly had tears running down my cheeks from the sheer beauty of that piece.   I went out the next day and bought it and still love it to this day.

Strangely enough although i don't dislike opera, i have never been an operatic fan.

You are young and life is long

And there is time to kill today

And then one day you find

Ten years have got behind you

No one told you when To run

You missed the starting gun

Breath I believe Floyd.

Was an early morning yesterday

I was up before the Dawn

but I realy have enjoyed my stay

but I must be moving on.

like a king without a Castle

or a queen without her Thrown

I'm an early morning lover

and i must  be moving on

With you.

Any time I want. And so can anyone else. Everything that's ever been written is a few clicks away online. personally, I have over 30,000 music files collected over my 68 years and it's not hard to pick just the right song list.

For some of us older guys we would make an argument that music used to be a lot more profound than it is these days, but the cream always seems to rise to the top and even now there's some very good songwriters out there. How often do you hear a song where the lyrics blow your mind and really stick with you?

I was just listening to "I will survive" by Cake. Gorgeous lyrics and an amazing song.

At first I was afraid
I was petrified
I kept thinking I could never live without you by my side

But then I spent so many nights
Just thinking how you've done me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to get along

And so you're back
From outer space
I just walked in to find you
Here with that look upon your face

I should have changed my f©©king lock
I would have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second you'd be back to bother me

Oh now go
Walk out the door
Just turn around now, you're not welcome anymore

Weren't you the one
Who tried to break me with desire?
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?

Oh not I, I will survive
Yeah
As Long as I know how to love
I know I'll be alive

I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
I will survive, I will survive
Yeah, yeah

It took all the strength I had
Just not to fall apart
I'm trying hard to mend the pieces
Of my broken heart

And I spent oh so many nights
Just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high

And you see me
With somebody new
I'm not that stupid little person
Still in love with you

And so you thought you'd just drop by
And you expect me to be free
But now I'm saving all my lovin'
For someone who's lovin' me

Oh now go
Walk out the door
Just turn around now

you're not welcome anymore

Weren't you the one
Who tried to break me with desire?
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?

Oh not I will survive
Yeah
As long as I know how to love
I know I'll be alive

I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
I will survive, I will survive

Marmalade. Reflections of my life.

Like a Virgin

I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you
I was beat, incomplete
I've been had, I was sad and blue
But you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new
Oh, like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats next to mine
Gonna give you all my love, boy
My fear is fading fast
Been saving it all for you
'Cause only love can last
You're so fine, and you're mine
Make me strong, yeah, you make me bold
Oh, your love thawed out
Yeah, your love thawed out
What was scared and cold
Like a virgin, hey
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
With your heartbeat next to mine
Whoa
Whoa, ah
Whoa
You're so fine and you're mine
I'll be yours 'til the end of time
'Cause you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
I've nothing to hide
Like a virgin, hey
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
With your heartbeat next to mine
Like a virgin, oh
Like a virgin
Feels so good inside
When you hold me
And your heart beats
And you love me
Oh-oh, oh, oh
Oh-oh, oh, oh

Look up Mark Knopfler's work, both in Dire Straits and solo, unless you already have. Not much better, especially if you're talking about the UK.

"I Will Survive" was written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris. The song was recorded by Gloria Gaynor and released in 1978

Remade by a hack.

The bass line is good

remembering lyrics makes no sense.  This song reminds me of...... This song motivates me this way... This song gets me ready to crush.... This song makes me sad...... Lyrics?  I don't care about that.  This is MUSIC, not words.  The lyrics are important on a subliminal scale.   This song was special for a few years, but not now.   Profound?  From dope smokers?  lol.   Not the lyrics.  Probably written high as a kite.  But the MUSIC is amazing.
