How do I get rid of boredom?

Featured Replies

Last year I sold my condo in Pattaya (Jomtien) and came back to the US. I have enough savings (around 500K USD) and I applied for SS to start from September. I will get around $3,000 per month. I am bored in the USA, though I live in a FL beach town. I like beaches. My US daughter lives in IL and she is a health care provider. I am buying a ticket in October to Thailand. I have lived on and off in Thailand for almost twenty years. Initially it was all fun. Alcohol. drugs, and ladies. Now at the age of 65, I lost interest so much so that I don't like drinking even. Only weed keeps me high which is not legal in FL. I feel married people are lucky. I have a daughter in Thailand who will go to the university next year and I am ready to take care of her expenses still she graduates. Her mom is OK and we are good friends and she has her own income but she plans to move to Issan next year when my daughter goes to the university. I simply cannot live in Issan. I am planning to relocate to Koh Samui that has better air quality than anywhere else in Thailand. I also need to buy a health insurance in Thailand. In the last twenty years I have visited more than fifty countries . So, there is no desire to travel anymore also except a trip to China in the next couple of years.

Any suggestions to kill time (not going to bars everyday) to get rid of boredom? Is Koh Samui a nice place to live? I have been to Koh Samui once ten years ago. I don't like Phuket. I like beaches.

You will probably quickly get bored in Samui.

You say really nothing about any hobbies.  Golf? Watching sports?

On the big picture if you are past partying, ladies and travel, life can get a little boring anywhere.  Normal for many once you hit a certain age the excitement of life has mostly passed.

Just try to stay healthy and keep contact with your daughter.

You live in Florida, which has great beaches, insurance, seafood, fishing, people your age to talk to, and ladies that are younger that would surely love to find a decent man to marry. You could move your daughter here to Florida for a better life. Married people, especially if they have a good partner, are lucky. Moving here, not near family in Illinois, language barrier, no freedom like the US, women if you want one will cost you, If you're bored there, you will be more bored here.

Attraction has people creating children. Choosing the wrong partner has most divorcing or staying in marriages that are not good for either party. As long as you support and have a relationship with your children they'll do okay. The only people who need therapy are those that use others, take advantage of others, abuse others and neglect people they should be caring for.

If you're bored in FL, making a 'lateral', beach area to beach area, to Samui, isn't going to make much difference.  If anything, you may be more bored, as Samui is really small.  Sort of isolated, along with TH being really small also.

I'm a Yank, and been around the whole country more that a few times, and it's hard finding things that are interesting.  Only takes a year or 2, and you've seen the whole country, a few times.

Where you are, is simply a location, which won't kill your boredom.  You have to do that, with hobbies, exercise routine, socializing if into that.

Shopping for whole foods, home cooking, leaning to, is a good hobby.  Can take up some time, and healthy.

Could always do some incognito volunteering (avoid work permit issues) at someplace that interests you.

Having 100k baht month would be a dream for many—big bikes & local travel etc. I get the ‘no more fun in bars and chasing women’ thing, but reckon you’ll quickly be bored with alternatives in Samui if you don’t like getting about. If in the States, I’d get over to Montana, saddle up a horse and cruise on up into the mountains. You guys are so lucky.
Did you consider South America and doing an ayahuasca retreat?

Yea ... what he said.

Think long & hard about leaving the states, as it has so much to offer.   I did most of my traveling in the states, Mexico & Caribbean.  North America alone gives you so many more options, diversity than TH or neighboring countries.   Same same, not much difference. @Knight Rider

… or lack thereof. Do more things in the moment, read lots, join clubs etc. You smoke so at least it’ll still be legal to get weed here if that is a main criteria. Get on the top side of Phangan in a nice beach hut and do a big doobies.

Why not?

Why do people ever get bored of travel if they can afford it?

If you're lazy, take cruises.

It transplants you to a completely different environment. If that doesn't alleviate boredom, I don't know what does.

Staying in the same place every day with the same environment can quickly lead to boredom.

And this includes anywhere in the world.

Take up golf, learn a musical instrument.

Read books.

Sometimes....not often.....I have two cups of coffee on a morning......I'm in Isan....so that is pushing the boundaries.

Take up some ind of sport. it takes up some time, gets you fitter, and would likely improve your state of mind.

In Samui there is Golf, Muay Thai, Yoga, Tennis, Padel, many waterports such as Paddle Boarding, hiking. swimming,

But remember, Samui is an island. Some get fed up with island life. Although travel to other islands and the mainland is fairly easy.

maybe learn a new language and then you can talk to Thai people too... they appreciate your efforts and love to chat - - and they can be very light hearted and funny. You might even find a companion that you enjoy talking to - - not just looking at... good luck - I would imagine there is an unexplored world of Thai culture just outside your proverbial door.

I live in Chiang Mai and stay busy enough with duplicate bridge a couple times a week and playing in two pool leagues. Mind you this is NOT competitive level stuff. In a motorcycle group that goes on regular outings. I also teach math eight hours a week to Myanmar high school refugee students. That led to being asked to join Rotary to assist in a scholarship program they run.  I did zero of those things before I retired.

Whatever you like to do, or think you want to try, there is a Facebook group for it, no matter where you live. I actually think there's more opportunity here to stay busy than in the US, but to each his own.

I hear you brother.

You might want to read up on existential boredom.....potentially more concerning than what you might think of as simply boredom!

Like the Royal Marines commando. Maybe AN could adopt this mantra related to boredom?

Boredom It's a state of mind. Maybe you already have it.

Can’t imagine how anyone could be bored, or have a boring moment in life.

no freedom like the US,what do you mean by that?

A club of a sport in which you are competent would seem a solution.

Freedom of speech, freedom to vote in officials that actually stay in. Freedom to stay in the country without taking any measures that could someday change for the worse. Freedom to oust officials that aren't doing their jobs or holding those accountable who break the laws, at least most of the time.

You will be more bored in thailand unless you speak thai. Not being able to interact fully is isolating which will increase your boredom significantly.

You're probably better off in florida and I would guess your daughter and wife may not mind living there part of the year. Send some postcards of the clean beach and water.

I have a sneaky suspicion you might be right.

I keep toying with the idea of going it alone over here.......but I imagine the novelty would wear off quickly.

I would see myself spending, say, nine months in the UK and only three months over here.

Freedom to riot, burn down civilization, throw rocks at cops and set up homeless encampments in blue cities

Bit left field, but have you come across or considered housesitting?

I use Trustedhousesitters.com..........not done any in the US, but the ones I see advertised are absolutely amazing......and there are lots to choose from.

This will get you out and about, meeting people, travelling, sense of purpose and apart from travel costs....... virtually free.

Married for 19 years, wife is close to perfect, but we live in Isan......living 'free'.....her house, farm, restaurant, bar......being pulled this way and that way at the moment.....driving me mad.
