Fed-Up Nottingham Dad Moves Family to Thailand for New Life

What a tiny small minded outlook you have.  My folks moved from the UK in 1975 with us three boys under 10, to the other side of the world and it was the best thing they ever did.

Kids in thailand (well, where I live) still play in the streets, run around smiling and living a super stimulating, interesting life.  Compared to kids in the west that spend all day inside on their phones.  The opportunities in Tahiland are vast for people with a little drive and get up and go.

Glad the world is full of people like my parents and the guy in this article and not Debbie Downers like you.

Well, everybody could see where it was going to with you.

  • Don't knock him, if you lived in Mansfield you would have taken Beirut or Dhaka as better options too.

  • i'm not up to date with the visa rules and regulations. how is it legally possible to simply move to thailand with a young family and decide to live here ?

You are spot on.

People in the west think they have it best because they own 'stuff' and have 'freedom'.  Hahaha....

I live with my family in a poor area of rural north east Thailand and my kids love it here.  Animals all over, kids playing in the streets.... The west is a well run slavery system where people are in debt up to their eyeballs and think they are rich 🙂

Kids love it wherever they have other kids to play with, and eventually will live on their phones, just like all other countries. What they'll do when they get to be teenagers is what matters, and then into adulthood. People here are in debt just as much, and have very little also. In the west you can have much more if you work for it. Here most stay poor all their lives

Thailand has some of the worst schools worldwide. Yes, it does have international schools that are comparable to regular western schools, but the majority go to village schools where very little is taught, and children are passed even if they rare go or fail, something which doesn't happen in the west. The only thing they learn here is how to read and write Thai, along with math, which is enough for them to go into the country to make 200-500 baht a day, or go back to the farms.

Yeah, Lesbian Gender Equality degrees are top quality in the west and only leave you with a debt of $50,000....

Yes, most Thais wouldn't know what the moon is if you asked them, that is true.  But Thai schools teach the basics exceptionally well and they also teach life skills like cleaning, cooking and most of all they teach RESPECT.  Something that is no longer in the west.  It is up to the parents to educate your kids on more worldly things if you want a well rounded education out of Thai schools, but I would rather top up my kids education wise in Thailand then listen to the bull<deleted> kids are indoctrinated with in the west.  IN MY HUMBLE OPINION of course

This article reminds me of the Eurythmic's song  sweet dreams.

"Sweet dreams are made of this

Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody's looking for something"

Dale Smith is just dreaming, no plan, no sought after skills, no real understanding of how the world works. He will be back in broken britain to live off the nanny state in no time flat.

They teach the basics poorly. It's up to the student to go further, and their parents finances. A students future depends on availability of better schools, and the jobs will always pay them a pittance. Cooking should be learned at home, as most of the important things should. Who teaches respect here? Control and hitting your kids teaches violence, which they'll repeat when they have kids. Children that are sent to western schools always do better in their lives than here, especially if they stay in the west.

You live in a poor area your poor life with a poor mind.

You remind me of the fairy tale of the wolf and the sour grapes.

And now you're trying to paint your life most colorful.

However, it's painted black.

Good for them. Definitely a growth experience, both for the parents and the children. Completely changes ones outlook and perception to break free from old patterns and lifestyle and some illusional, ethereal feeling of being a part of something, there, just because you were born there, and got stuck into a national identity (that somehow is worth giving one's life to) that in the end is meaningless.

Good for them. I'm delighted they've seen the light, and can begin this journey, first here to Thailand, and in due course, here or elsewhere.

The journey starts with this one small step (research and deciding) , then actually shedding the material things that don't matter, whittling down to a few suitcases, followed by the big step (getting on that jet plane).

Quake , what do mean it's not fair on the kids man ? The kids man would be their father and it was his idea to move to Thailand.

Thailand is still cheap in comparison to most western countries. I've been here 16 years, gave my Thai partner 20,000 baht a month for housekeeping expenses (for food and utilities) when I first arrived and still giving her the same amount 16 years later.

The comments here are a direct representation of what I see of ferangs here in Thailand.

*The people that move here, build the biggest, tasteless house in the village, then spend all their days complaining about Thai people doing things wrong with their old ferang mates.

*The people that move here for a total change and absorb themselves into the local culture and its people (something the above ferangs complain foreigners dont do in their home countries).

You think they are making claims? If so, they have to tell them they are leaving the country.

I've seen a few people claim they are 'home schooling' - what about friendship etc?

Most folks who say 'we will homechool them' don't realize to do it properly:

- The classes (at home) take 4 to 6 hours per day?

- Must have a specific room and must be away from outside noise with no interference from other family members.

- Mum should teach 2 or 3 specific subjects and dad 2 or 3 specific subjects and not mixed.

- Regular testing is critical but often doesn't happen at all.

- Preparation for 'next day' takes hours. Lots of content on the internet but still needs to be found and 'packaged' ready for the next day, time consuming.

- Critical that the kids (and adults) learn to read and write and convese in Thai - how will that be handled?

This guy does not know what he is letting himself in for.

When you live in Thailand  you will see the dark side .

His kids will never be able to work and neither will they.

His kids will end up mixing with drugs gambling inherent in a lot of Thai families.

Dont get me wrong for elder retires with a good pension it can be the land of dreams but for a young family it will end up as hell.

He's gone for a long holiday.

Wait till he learns it's very expensive to put children into school in Thailand. He claims he is going to home school them which is incredibly selfish in my opinion. Schooling is not just about education.

Wait till he learns his travel insurance will have to be replaced by health insurance in Thailand after a year out of living in the UK, most travel insurances become invalid.

Wait till he learns rental is not that cheap.

Wait till he navigates the visa process.

Thailand is not as cheap as he thinks it is.

He claims he is going to do social media and generate income. Him and the thousands of others.

The UK Needs new laws in this generation that if you leave the country for a year you are no longer a citiizen.

One could say that about all the expats that leave their native countries for a different life.  One should not lose citizenship but maybe some benefits such as health care which is shared by taxation of citizens.  My opinion anyway as I came here to retire and live better than I could in the US - number one is here there is no cold weather/snow!  and living here can be cheaper too depending on what lifestyle one has. IMHO.

Yeah, good luck with that.

International schools very expensive.

The wife will soon be tired of the Thai girls checking him out everytime they go out.

Thailand is definately not cheap anymore.

I think it is more "compliance" without questioning.

I live here fairly well on $500AUD a week. I do have a house already though.  I couldnt get out of bed in Australia for that now.

Having a daughter here, tried local schools for a couple of years and definitely not worth it IMHO.  Then moved to international school of CM - very positive - some students go to the top US universities.  My daughter had scholarships but opted to go to the top Thai University and this third year has been selected to attend a top Korean University for her third year.   She graduated from CMIS speaking, reading, teaching in 4 different languages - Chinese, Korean, Thai and English.  Also a computer whiz and CMIS taught her to WANT to learn all that she could as we never pressured her.  Self schooling totally here in a foreign country would meant that these children might miss a lot of the social interactings which all the world learned about during the COVID pandemic when all were shuttered.

No...he can just wing it and not pay a penny and.rely on gofund me if anything happens but if he wants reasonable health insurance for four people, that is the going rate

when I was living in the UK as a family man with four kids we had  one broken arm in 20 years.

Under 5kbht for setting and cast in a Thai government hospital.

No need to pay for insurance.

Yeah, I agree with that.  Their lack of questioning comes from teachers no wanting to lose face by not knowing an answer.  You need to know that exists and teach ways around that.  But overall, respect IS taught.  When I walk in a room here, all the kids greet me.  When I walk in a room in the west, no kids look up from their phones and no parents give a <deleted>.

Each to their own....Like I said in an above post, there is two very different outlooks on life displayed on this thread.

UPDATE:

After meeting Nok while he and his wife were looking for a furnished rental, Dave and Nok began to spend more time together. What started as casual help with translation and local arrangements soon turned into long walks, shared laughter, and late-night chats over street food.

Sources close to the couple say Nok helped the family navigate everything from finding a school for the children to setting up utilities — but it was Dave she seemed most focused on helping. Within weeks, tensions between Dave and his wife Kim grew apparent, with neighbors in Hua Hin noticing that she was spending more time alone with the kids, while Dave was often seen riding around town with Nok.

Soon Kim and Dave had moved into a separate apartment. In a now-deleted TikTok post Dave wrote that he and Kim had "decided to part ways" and that he was “grateful to have found love and purpose in an unexpected place.”

As for Kim and the kids, they're reportedly planning to return to the UK “once the savings run out.

I have friends who went the home schooling route.  They found that it only works if you have a supportive home schooling network around you providing socializing and enrichment opportunities like group outings.  You just can't keep two kids isolated in a house every day doing sums.

I suspect this dreamer and his family are in for a hard slap from reality.

Selling their home and car, the Smiths plan to land in Thailand with savings and a sense of adventure. “We’re taking nothing but clothes. What else do we need?” Smith remarked.

Dale Smith and family will be deported within a year.  I'd love to know how he plans to live here.  Support his family on 30K a month teaching English?

And Mr. Smith and family are entering Thailand on "what" kind of visa and plans to earn a living doing "what" kind of job.

Mr. Smith and family are in for a rude awakening.   Just checked.  His first name isn't "bob."

I like his attitude. A very bold decision when you have school age children but I wish him and his family all the best.

I like his attitude too, but Thailand IS NOT the place to come to.  It sounds to me as though he hasn't done his homework to understand the visa (financial) requirements and the lack of legal job opportunity market.

Just what Thailand needs more middle class anglos (an entire family no less) running away looking to live on the cheap. Thailand is already over the middle class coming here to retire on the cheap. Expect to see that change soon with stiffer financial requirements, but I digress. I'll say the over/under on the disallusion of the dream is 2 years... by then they will either love it or leave it. Good luck.
