Chiang Mai Crowned Asia's Best City, Bangkok Shines in Third

A city without good baguette is not worth a damn.

This is where Chiang Mai really leaves them all in the shade, due to the fortunate coincidence of one of France's greatest bakers having opened L'Opera bakery in Chiang Mai. The baguette produced there is the best in Asia, and possibly the best in the world, certainly better than anything you get in France.

Thankfully the national treasure that is this French baker has taught staff, and even though he now sold L'Opera the sale with the same staff retained ensures continuity.

Enjoy your Hawaiian bread in Singapore.

Chouquette isn't too shabby either. Blessed with good bakeries in Chiang Mai.

Very, very important to get good bread - man cannot live by rice alone.

Very true.

It goes without saying that a cosmopolitan city has to be able to offer a variety of international staples, and Baguette is so high on the list that even the Japanese and Chinese try to copy it, albeit not alltogether successfully.

Fortunately in Chiang Mai we get the real deal from a real French baker.

I've not seen a good bakery in Singapore, but then I don't spend much time there due to the oppressive heat. Another advantage of being in Chiang Mai.

I can afford that and a hell of a lot more. However, I am not stupid or a pussy and waste my money on sub standard accommodation or services but am too scared to complain.

Think that still makes you the fool?

Remember you started it. I have never directed any comments at you. I have never  called you "stupid or a pussy" because i do not know who or what you are.  Also, I do not care to ever know.

I don't understand how a city with such an air pollution problem for a good chunk of every year can legitimately win such a prize.

I think you will find that you were the first to comment on affordability and the size of your wallet. Also, was your comment not alluding to me being a fool?

I do not give a flying as to who you are or what you are. I have already formed my opinion from your earlier posts and will leave it at that.

It's not a problem at all. Air quality is superb for most of the  year.

Besides, most cities in Asia have air quality issues.

It's obviously about the quality offerings a city can provide .And here clearly Chiang Mai has the advantage over other cities.

The Guardian's food critic rated Chiang Mai  as the city with the best food in the world. There's elephant sanctuaries, Japanese Onsen's in the mountains, gorgeous mountain scenery, ATV camps, shooting ranges, Tiger Kingdom, Cobra shows, by far the best cafes not just in Thailand but the entire world, no place in the world has the cafe selection Chiang Mai has, there's almost no traffic issues, there's night clubs, restaurants, the best massages in the world...you even get baguette better than in France.

Of course Chiang Mai is the best city in the world. What other city comes close? None really. It's not even close.

Love your attitude.  Headed back in November.

Any city can boost its ratings by buying hundreds of subscriptions and voting for itself

How else could India have 3 highly-rated cities on list?

Who cares? T&L is rubbish.

It’s a travel magazine gimmick.

Anyway, those who are focused on everything mueang cm are missing out on the most wonderful aspect of the region.

I never asked for you opinion. Those comments were in response to someone eles and not you.  If you do not give a flying xxx then why even direct a comment at me?

When were you made a Mod? I will quote what I like, when I like, responding to whichever comment I choose.

If any of the Mods have a problem with anything I post I'm sure they will take appropriate action.

This ok with you boss?

Absolutely right, one of the big advantages of Chiang Mai is the endless option for day trips to places close by. The Mon Jam flower experience, the charming Mae Kampong and much else besides.

You can basically never get tired of Chiang Mai. Always new things to discover.

The world's largest revolving sushi restaurant company from Japan just opened a branch in Chiang Mai.

Best food in the world?

That's insane.

True. But you totally missed the point that was being eluded to due to your romantic tourism perspective. When you have a chance, take a look under the hood.

Not according to this Guardian food critic:

Chiang Mai food paradise: 'The best I've ever eaten'

I’ve lived in India all my life, eaten everywhere from Leh to Cochin, tasted extraordinary dishes by the humblest chaat-wala and the fanciest chef, but nowhere in my land, not in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Hyderabad or Kolkata, have I eaten so well, so cheaply, so grandly and with so much joy as in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai.

Even without the food, it’s a kind of paradise: close to the Myanmar border, modern yet resolutely traditional, spotlessly clean while never sterile; easily navigable but filled with a thousand hidden treasures, urban and chic (in part thanks to the large student population from the university) but surrounded by hills and jungle.

I saw it but chose to ignore it. It's ludicrous to suggest Chiang Mai "bought" votes. India may well have operated that way. But the votes Chiang Mai got would have been from enchanted visitors who love Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai doesn't need to buy votes. it's the best city in the world.

1) Not a mod. 2) Just stating facts. 3) Never directed any comments at you 4) You did not call me "smug, stupid or a pussy"??  If this is off base then so be it.

I just invited a super hot 23 year old from Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai, I met her via Bumble and was messaging her on Insta.

She said "Too much dust".

Wtf???

I had a 5 day trip to Lampang late last year and to be honest, that was about 4 days and 23 hours too long. The only saving grace was that the Space Hotel wasn't too bad. It ticked a box as in:-  place on the list, never to return.

It looks that way. Ah well.

I will order some superb Indian food in honour of the Guardian's knowledgeable food critic to get over this painful episode.

Did I mention that there are not one but TWO South Indian restaurants in Chiang Mai? That' s the creme de la creme. In London they make a big deal about Dosas. Here it's just another dinner.

Yes, I have to go to Dishoom in Shoreditch when in London if I fancy a decent Dosa. Have to pay through the nose for it aswell.

You have me fancying Indian now. Might have to pop to the Rajdabar on Loy Kroh for a takeaway.

Lampang is an awesome place, quite, no traffic, go hang out at large well maintained natural settings where often you and your companions are the only visitors and of course the locals in the rural north are wonderful. Lots to do and never bored.

Agreed. It is a dump. Lamphun is better.

Not to mention the queues in front of Dishoom and how packed it is. It is fantastic mind you, foodwise.

I got their recipe book in digital format.

There's also another nice south Indian place in London, when it opened the critics made a fuss about it. Funny we have two here in Chiang Mai.

My bad, that was the point of the guy you were quoting.

So your point was not that the outskirts of CM are worth a visit? So what point were you making, pray tell?

Old Crumudgeon incarnate perhaps?

As stated earlier, get out there and take a look under the hood.  Otherwise continue with the tourism.

Errr, I was in Monjam a few days ago. In Mae Kampong a week before that.

And I live here. I'm not a tourist. In fact I was at the NBT TV station on the 12th, supporting my girl's quest to become the Thai Face Topmodel.

I'm basically a local.
