  • The video is described as "depicted the attackers forcibly restraining the man, identified as 27-year-old Cameron James Wilkins, preventing any retaliation while they searched him for valuables".

20,000 baht ?

But I  just had a few drinks , I don't want to buy the bar ?

Maybe he proposed marriage, and they put the sinsod on the checkbin.

That scam used to be common in Soho, London. Even back in the '80's and '90's.

Taxi drivers got commission for dropping tourists off to a bar or strip joint. When they were confronted with an exorbitant bill for a few drinks, they were often forcibly taken to an ATM by the bouncers to pay for said bill if they didn't have enough cash.

Sometimes given a good beating as well. These weren't skinny Thais doling out the goods, but proper heavies.

Karaoke Business as usual

The best way to avoid being scammed by bars in Thailand is to give up alcohol. Every glass of alcohol damages the body because it is a Group 1 carcinogen (the worst of the worst, along with processed meats). There is sufficient evidence linking it to cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, and liver. I gave up alcohol on 5th November 1982 on the island of St. Vincent and I've not been to a bar since.

Welcome to Thailand guaranteed friendly and well price holiday destination.

Go to a bar for few hours 20000bht, I could get 35 cartons of beer delivered to place for that money.

Agree and if he just drank water his bill would have only been 19000bht 😂

From what I've heard over the years here, you're pretty well spot on. That's how karaoke bars operate and how they can afford so many staff whose job it is to beat up anyone who complains.

Yeah, good luck in your crusade to get people to stop drinking.

I think the brit got real nervous when they took off his pants??

That's when he starts pleading to pay...

Normally your clothes don't get removed in a beatdown.

Pay as you go mate, pay as you go.

That does not work if it's a scam. A bill can be inflated at any time.

I wouldn't be too hard on him , most tourists are a bit gullible and naive, especially the first time they visit somewhere, They are not all seasoned mongers or expats,   9 onto 1 ??    nobody would expect to find themselves in that situation,

Lock them all up for a long time

One thing more boring than a drunk is an ex drinker telling people how long ago it was they last had a drink and listing the so called dangers of drinking.

In Chiang Mai, tensions escalated yesterday as nine karaoke bar workers were arrested for assaulting a British tourist following a dispute over alleged overcharging.

The Mueang Chiang Mai Police responded after a viral video showed several individuals attacking a foreign man outside an entertainment venue. The video, widely circulated on Thai social media, depicted the attackers forcibly restraining the man, identified as 27-year-old Cameron James Wilkins, preventing any retaliation while they searched him for valuables.

The incident began at a karaoke bar on Sri Don Chai Road in the bustling Chang Khlan area. Police confirmed that Wilkins had filed a complaint alleging excessive charges for services rendered at the venue. Reports indicate he received a bill of approximately 20,000 Thai Baht but refused to pay, claiming overcharging. This led to a heated argument with the staff that spiralled into violence as he left the premises.

Upon arrest, the suspects claimed that Wilkins' refusal to settle the bill triggered the altercation. The group, comprising eight men and one woman, were identified as:

  • Teerasak, 24
  • Siladon, 20
  • Narong, 28
  • Apichart, 22
  • Adisarn, 22
  • Sakda, 22
  • Sakda, 18
  • Worrapoj, 23
  • Somsri, 28

The venue appeared closed when reporters visited later in the day. Attempts to reach management were futile as the bar provided no public contact information.

Local residents disclosed that the karaoke bar recently changed ownership and attracted a primarily foreign clientele, often brought in by taxi or baht bus drivers. Neighbours suspected the bar had arrangements with drivers, providing commissions for delivering customers.

Allegations emerged suggesting frequent police visits due to conflicts over pricing, a recurring issue between staff and patrons. Despite multiple complaints of inflated prices, officials have yet to confirm whether they will investigate these claims further.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns over pricing practices and customer safety in entertainment venues catering to tourists. The police have pledged to review the case thoroughly, ensuring justice for those affected and potentially addressing systemic issues in tourism-centric areas.

True enough, but it was never 9 onto one, and a couple of Uk heavies would not usually work themselves into such a frenzy

I'm all for moderation. I've really really cut back on alcohol intake but not about to tell others to do so or stop.

I don't trust people that entirely don't drink. I'm proven right time and again

maybe  but the bill for a single drink can only be inflated so much if paid immediately , a bill for 10 drinks paid at the end of the night is far more likely to be loaded up,   Hardly rocket science

sorry guy, it's not the alcohol, it's the lack of control!

if you have a couple drinks and then stop, then nothing will happen and you've enjoyed yr drinks!

when it's an overload of booze, no wonder problems march in!

same with many other things!

control is da best!

I have never heard of any other country where tourists get their heads stomped in by 9-10 locals. This is purely a Thai thing. Never happens in Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Philippines...not even in China, where they openly hate foreigners...why is that? This is something special to Thailand, and it's a damn good indication that just barely under the surface, Thais utterly hate farangs.

9-10 locals vs. 1 western tourist is something that only happens in Thailand. It's a Thai thing. Never even happens in Cambodia, China, Vietnam...it's only in Thailand. Just below the surface, Thais absolutely hate farangs. Take your money elsewhere.

Well that should take some of the tint off those rose colored glasses some expats wear.

Sadly not.  These mentally ill Thai apologist types actually get off on seeing other foreigners being attacked.  In their broken minds, the foreigners being attacked are "bad foreigners" and the Thais doing the attacking are good and smart, as they figured out that the foreigners are bad.  The deluded foreigner thinks they won't get attacked, because they are one of the rare "good foreigners" and Thais know this and wouldn't attack them.

Its a little unfair to describe the victim as stupid simply for availing himself of an entertainment venue, I doubt there was a warning sign outside explaining what would probably happen,, Not all people wish to drink in their room when on holiday

Definitely can and does happen Philippines often for no reason other than pent up jealousy

Stay out of local beer bars with local men. Don't drink with them, don't buy them drinks, don't fraternize
