I think the brit got real nervous when they took off his pants??

That's when he starts pleading to pay...

Normally your clothes don't get removed in a beatdown.

what did that guy say the other day ,,,, ?

Of course, now that Chiang Mai is officially the world's best city, no doubt we'll be inundated with tourists. How could it be otherwise.

  • Got to laugh Nine on to one. Sounds about right.    Over charging, nah. never in Thailand.

  • The video is described as "depicted the attackers forcibly restraining the man, identified as 27-year-old Cameron James Wilkins, preventing any retaliation while they searched him for valuables".

If there have been multiple complaints then why the hell is the place still running. Shut it down. And charge the staff for robbery, not just excessive charging.

It was closed to the public last night although there were people inside.

They all look like girly boys trying to act tough, and the fact they managed to get that British guy’s pants off really makes me wonder what’s going on.

What bothered me in particular was the girl who was just watching coming up kicking him once (then a guy shoos her away) and the guys removing the clothing.  It suggested there was something sexual going on with the assualt.

Because anonymity is their privilege.

A privilege that is seldom afforded to  victims for some reason, which seems wrong to me

Definitely can and does happen Philippines often for no reason other than pent up jealousy

Stay out of local beer bars with local men. Don't drink with them, don't buy them drinks, don't fraternize

Quite.  Filipinos are probably the worst of the bunch when it comes to jealousy and hatred of foreigners.

Tourists often wear money belts under their clothing.  They were probably looking for that, since they appeared to be robbing him.

It will open again soon. Same staff. It's the Thai way. Probably all own a bit of the business. Sleep in the karaoke joint. Smells like 100% bad news.

Maybe, but in this case it appears that the bar in question is well known for over-charging.

A tacky one opened up near us last year in the depths of Samut Prakan, was thinking of going. But twoThai neighbours went and had 2 drinks and a small amount of food- 6k baht, so it's not just Johny farang who gets done

20.000 Baht ??? image.gif.91cbe57f2fa6bd6719fa348924cdcbe3.gif

According to a friend, with this amount in Bangkok, you can drink 10 beers, offer 5 lady drinks, pay 1 bar fine and pay the intimate service of a sexy bar-girl in a "short-time" hotel room before taking a taxi to come back to your home and have a good diner with your wife . . .

On Cowboy maybe, unlikely in a Patong karaoke bar though ....

but in reality and after having had a few too many ,

Exactly, the scam occurs because idiots run up a tab all night and by the end of the night they're pissed.

Remember, when you're pissed you can't even defend yourself in a fight anymore. That's when they know they can attack easily.

Where did you get that info from?

It has only been open under this name for less than a month!

The classic spot to be scammed in KTV bars... owned by police as well.

Its caused by bars padding bills . and charging extortionate amounts

Yes, but how does it play out exactly?

Do they try to charge you 20,000 Baht after you've had only 1 drink and are still sober?

Or do they wait for you to order 15 drinks and get pissed?

You don't think there's a difference?

In 2009........That's 16 SIXTEEN years ago, we all knew this scam.   But tourists have no time to check every scam before they travel, and why search for something negative?   I remember around 2019 a Thai friend told me Karaoke is fine if you are in the right province.  I said, I don't care.....it's a scam in Chiang Mai and that's enough.  It's probably the same 'ol scam.  you walk in, buy ONE drink and they charge for music and drinks for all.  if you don't pay, they beat you up.   I have a feeling they really want to beat you up.  lol.

Nobody under 80 is reading this.....but maybe you have to Google your intention with "scam" in it.  example:  you want to jet ski in Pattaya.   Google "Pattaya Jet Ski Scam"

it was interesting (not really) how the best looking girls were in front of the karaoke shops back in the day.   Red Flag number 9208742930847308942743842374.    I'm not a Brit, I don't fall for this garbage.  lol

I think scams are really rare. That's why on those RARE occasions that they do happen they make the news and we read about them but how many people can honestly say that they have been scammed?

It is closed for good under it's old name as the name sign above the door has been removed!

I won't be surprised if the venue gets closed for only a week maximum and then re-opens, and then similar incidents happen again in the future. Actually, I am pretty sure that in most of the overcharging incidents, the guy just pays up (especially if the overcharging amount is not too excessive) and chalks it up to experience, and the stuff never makes it to the media/social media.

Very nearly right!

It appears to be reopening tonight under a new name but the same staff!

They are not obligated to stop you from being stupid and over drinking. Ppl in these situations almost always lose track of how much they've had and then cry when they see the bill
