Golf is quite an entrepreneur, no standing her feet into her stomach on beach road for her. "Don't run after money, go where money is" is a lesson she took to heart, I wouldn't mind betting that she has an IQ of 140, the monks not so much.

Bet she's  a star performer at apple bobbing.

If only serving for their beliefs, they should not have these huge PRIVATE loads of cash. All money should go to the temple but not any person. Financial transactions should be supervised.

Her rich husband left her because she was cheating.

So she wanted to maintain her luxury lifestyle and decided to blackmail politicians and monks. Unbelievable.

This woman will have given Thai woman a bad reputation all over the Western world. Any man with a Thai woman will be looked on with pity in the West now.

Here, if you want to see the face of evil, here is the ugly biatch and the full story.

The scandal underscores a significant problem within the religious sector: the accumulation of wealth by temples and senior monks, often without oversight.

Presumably the popularity/acceptance of sex for money in Thai culture plays a part also.

Always some bad apples, the problem is kicking them out.

The problem is having people left to run the place after they do!

One day in a distant future humans will realise that there’s nothing special about religion as it’s all man made and therefore those representing the higher orders are just like everybody else.

More probably know than don't.  Some ignore it because they see the value and relevance to their lives, while others ignore it because it's such an ingrained part of culture and society.

Even if you don't like it, you cannot ignore how intertwined our histories and cultures are with our respective religions.

I pray to God everyday that that day comes soon.

This the same golf that got 385 million bht over 3 years from monks 😳

Someone seriously needs to start investigating temples and who is running and living in them . The amounts of money some of these places seem to have is insane.

Our small village, approx 1,000 population, has a abbot who must be 150 k's plus. Gets driven around in a Merc with black windows while the monks cram into a mini-bus. Just had something built that resembles a jumbo volleyball court with 50 foot roof & no walls. Enuff concrete to re-surface an airports runways. Money.....no object.🙃🙃

The religion’s governing body in Thailand, the Supreme Sangha Council, can crack down on monk wrongdoing.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/15/thailand-buddhist-monks-bad-behaviour-crackdown

What is it doing now and how well?

From https://www.ibcworld.org/home/diaspora/Thailand :

  • "In Thailand, the Buddhist government (represented by a Buddhist Head of State) recognizes the Sangha Supreme Council (Mahathera Samakhom) as the highest governing body for Buddhism. The Sangha Supreme Council is responsible for overseeing the administration and regulation of the Buddhist monastic community (Sangha) in Thailand. It consists of senior monks from the Theravada tradition and plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and standards of Buddhist monastic life in the country. (my italics)
  • Additionally, the Department of Religious Affairs within the Ministry of Culture oversees Buddhist affairs and works in collaboration with various Buddhist organizations and institutions to promote and support Buddhism in Thailand."

By government recognition and oversight, the SSC appears to be essentially an extension of the government. So presumably where does authority ultimately rest?

In a bid to tred carefully and not bring the image of Buddhism into the limelight they are sadly lacking in oversight.

Ask the  farangs who purchase the large ostentatious gold amulets and parade about with them on.

What a pathetic and shameful attempt to turn this into a "farang man bad" story.

Absolute madness......even the poorest of the poor will still pour what little money they have into temples.

We have a new temple, just finished. Stainless steel, smoked glass, polished marble....... close by the entrance there's a family of six, living in a single roomed, wooden shack, cooking on wood....kids dressed in rags.....madness..

I hope you'll support this family.

Yep, some monks have sex with women, some priests are pedophiles, etc. And the alleged "God" is doing nothing. It's pathetic.

To be fair, most religions conveniently state that the punishment doesn't happen until you die.

Not at all. The question was asked as to where the wats obtain their funds. As most  of the forum whingers  are not conversant in the Thai language, they will find it easier to speak with another foreigner. They can ask the ones who give money to the wats, by way of purchases of the loud amulets about the circumstances of their purchases.  I cannot answer on this one because I do not  give money to any wats. There  is a reason why some farangs will spend 10,000-50,000-100,000 on an amulet. Once they share their motive with you, you will be enlightened and can go back to complaining.

My Thai in-laws were born and raised in a village near Ayutthaya.  I've been there for tamboon for the mother and remembrance for the father, who emigrated from China before WW2.

In the last 18 years a new temple has not been completed.  The abbot is said to have at least two common law wives which he provides with housing, food, and more.  I've asked his monks when the temple will be finished.  One even rolled his eyes.  Family living there say they donate less and less to this abbot.  My Chinese sister-in-law has a stepson who takes drugs, does not work, and will join the monk hood for a few months as a breather.  Then go back to drug use and goofing off.  He set his stepmother's house on fire and is in jail now.

The Chinese father had two wives, one he brought from China and one in Thailand.  He had 15 children with them.  My wife is the baby at age 79.  She has one surviving brother and two surviving sisters.

There are about 300,000 monks in Thailand and up to 85,000 novices and those numbers fluctuate.  That 410 Billion baht owned by abbots, monks, and the support structure is one scandal.  We'll say a conservative $12 Billion U.S. dollars.

I've been married 53 years.  We have five adult children, all married, and 12 grandchildren aged 13 to 30.

Buddhism does some good in Thailand overall but the corruption is intense.

and stick around after a ceremony where the locals bring food and "envelopes" donations ..

see how a certain few get to take the extra's and divy them up ..  and the people that want to donate to the temple for a building project..    see what happens if you offer to buy the material directly for them ...   ha !  Nope.. you need to give them the cash so they can buy it and skim..

yes I know first hand !
