British Embassy Alerts Pattaya Expats to Growing Risks

Featured Replies

Every morning i read online stories from 5 or 6 different usa towns and cities where i used to live.  Everyday there are accidents and more shootings that you can imagine...EVERY day.  At least once a week I read where someone was killed in a motorcycle or moped accident along with many more car accidents. Once a month or more i see where a pit bull has mauled or killed yet another person. I see where online predators are arrested for trying to lure kids into their web.

I suspect that most cities /towns around the world are not so different from what i see.  Does Pattaya have crime and accidents and stupid people?  For sure.  But also lots of all those most anywhere you go.

I guess an embassy feels they need to warn people that yes if you go to pattaya and do a lot of really stupid things riding /driving drunk ,smoking strong weed, being so brain dead as to think you can bring pot back to your home country ,refusing to educate yourself with a tiny bit of research as to lady boys on beach road , wandering around snockerd drunk at 4 am, etc etc that gee you just might have some problems.

Correct.   Thailand has very strict immigration rules and no tolerance for Sub-saharans or South Asians overstaying their short welcome.   Seems to be working very well for them.

  • Oh I dunno, soi 6/1 Pattaya at 5am might get into the list!

Surprised, not; but I shall be surprised if some other Embassies do not issue similar warnings.

As we know, Pattaya has been getting some bad international press in recent times; and nothing effective has been done by the local authorities or Bangkok to remedy the "problems".

With an increasing number of foreigners behaving badly or the target of crimes, of course the consular sections of various Embassies will be forced to become involved.

When I go out at night in Pattaya, and I don't mean the early hours of the morning, I always carry an old wallet stuffed with paper in my pocket, and a few notes down my sock, never more than 2000Bt.

There is a solution to this problem: simply end visa-free entry for British citizens. The embassy will be pleased, fights in Pattaya will significantly decrease, and the reputation of foreigners among Thai people will improve to some extent. Where is that guy with the large banner? It needs to be updated!

Obviously, you haven't been down south.

In April of this year there were 57 insurgent attacks, resulting in 18 deaths and 50 injuries from the Buddhist Thai and Malay Muslim populations in Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Songkhla provinces.

The April 24 attack was typical of the violence; Ethnic Malay Muslim insurgents in southern Thailand shot dead Pongkorn Chumapan, 16, and wounded Pokanit Morasin, 12, on Tuesday when they attacked a pickup truck taking Buddhist monks and novices from Wat Kura temple to collect alms in Songkhla province’s Sabayoi district.

We just avoided a massive slaughter in Phuket  and krabi a  couple weeks ago when Thai security forces defused bombs at 11 sites in Phuket and Krabi. Thai authorities allege Malay-Muslim militants planted improvised explosives at 11 sites in popular tourist destinations Phuket and Krabi.    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-01/australia-issues-thailand-travel-warning-over-risk-of-terrorism/105480898

I have not heard anything from the embassy which as far as I know ceased to exist years ago and NEVER HELP British people. They never help at all. So they can eff off as far as I'm concerned.

Obviously you don't know much.

They have never "ceased to exist". The British Embassy and the British Consulate are 2 separate entities. It would be very unusual for the embassy to have any involvement with expats, that would be the role of the consulate.

Some years ago the consular section was reduced in size with some functions being moved to India. The OP is to do with current consular services in Thailand.

The old embassy building in Wireless Road was sold off and the embassy just relocated to Sathorn Tower.

The consulate was very helpful when I asked.

Are there any other kind of Consuls?

I think the Brits still dream of Empire and the bureaucracy that it creates.

How dumb are these people.

They figure that since it is legal in Thailand, only the  European customs to worry about, and a suitcase full will yield a good price in the pub!

Might be illegally parked though...

Spelling correction in my post - 'stationery' = paper goods.  I meant 'stationary' = not moving.  I was not moving when two helmetless tearaways ploughed into me at a U-turn doing 90kph.  The police adjudged it was my fault for crossing a major road even though I had completed the manoeuvre.

The embassy continues to urge all Brits in Thailand to register for travel advice and remain informed about local laws and risks.

Does this refer to the UK FCO link or a local consular link?
