Having "fun" is generally unhealthy.

Featured Replies

Amazing: Everything that is associated with "fun/increased happyness" is "unhealthy".

Alcohol= unhealthy. Smoking= unhealthy. Eating foods that taste good= unhealthy. Drugs (to temporary escape a crude and unforgiving world)= unhealthy. Too much sex= unhealthy (VD plus increased "personel problems)".

Within this context, I am wondering how much longer people live, staying away from those unhealthy "feel good" temptations during their lifetime?

Any studies concerning this matter? Preferrably from reputable universities, not "Facebook Findings" if possible.

I think assuming they live longer would be incorrect. I think the people you describe would tend to die earlier due to depression.

During your "walking meditations" do you occasionally think of what you possibly have missed?

Famous last words of dying people: "I should have lived more intensively while I had the chance".

More sex usually means more "partners". Those "left behind" and those that promess a bright new future. "Personal Problems" guaranteed.

Children etc etc.......

Findings in Thai monasteries aren't really conclusive, though plenty of anecdotal evidence of head monks living into their 90's etc. However Japan tracked the stats during the last century and definitely found evidence:

"Okuda points to longevity statistics broken down by occupation from 1926 to 1979 and noted that the longest-lived people were in professions related to religion. For instance, among 149 head priests at Buddhist temples aged 75, the average remaining lifespan was 4.2 years. Dr Okuda attributes this to their diet."

I think “ having fun “ means different things to different people.

As for instance an earlier poster referred to the life of Monks.

For me it used to be the activities you listed : alcohol ; smoking ; unhealthy foods etc etc.

However upon retirement I decided to embark on a different lifestyle, based on the premise that I wanted to enjoy a better quality of life as I aged.

I was aware of the complications that can be caused by my previous lifestyle.

I was also always aware that we were conditioned into believing that “ having

fun” meant doing those things!  We also inherited from our Ancestors such behaviours. After all alcohol and tobacco has been around in some form or another for thousands of years!

I also saw that the lifespan of Thais were much lower than in other countries.

Many Thais in villages because of hard work, play hard and drink the stronger stuff and die ‘ young’.

So I investigated into “ fun” and happiness and decided I didn’t have to follow the flock. Did an online course which helped me and I changed my social life and drastically reduced time with friends who had “ fun” in a different way.

Personally I feel happy with my current lifestyle now and I don’t have to convince anyone. The main thing is that I enjoy my lifestyle with plant- based food, no alcohol , and had stopped tobacco several years ago!

I don’t need research to convince me, during my working career I had seen more than enough.

Change is a huge challenge, our brain is often triggered into indulgence of previous behaviours. I get fun in meeting that challenge love every moment and day that I enjoy without substances marketed to get us addicted.

Being financially supported all your life, not having to do much if any physical work, not having to do any mentally draining tasks either.
I bet they reason some monks live into their 90s is simply the lack of stress.

It's an interesting discussion, and some things come to mind. First of all living a life without passion and pleasure creates unhappiness, so why avoid everything that is supposedly unhealthy only to end up unhappy and unfulfilled?

What on Earth about smoking makes people happy? People smoke because they're addicted and most smokers that I talk to barely enjoy it. Ganja is completely different. But even with ganja for me it was only enjoyable when I did it occasionally, and the people that I know who do it daily do not seem to enjoy it much, as sobriety then becomes the novelty, not being high.

And lastly I think happiness is a nearly impossible quality to define, so I've resorted to using fulfillment as a gage, as it's much easier to make a determination based on that.

A simple mind discussion! Let's reverse the question: In what form is drug use, including alcohol, healthy? The same applies to smoking and unhealthy foods... Healthy? And don't give me the psychological aspect of healthy! Preferably from reputable universities, not "Facebook Findings" if possible.🤣🤣🤣

Have you investigated the Hash House Harriers?

It's a shame everything I like is either improper, illegal, or fattening.

lot's of things are fun ..   and the older I get (70) the easier it gets to have fun ..

last night I went out back @ 2am  with a fresh brewed cappuccino and the dogs playing in the yard

pulled out a lounge chair and watched for meteors whizzing by ...  some really good ones ...   I had a blast

There is some educational points to these claims, and that is when you have been off sugar, and all these kinds of unhealthy options for a longer time, it doesnt taste as it used to anymore.

Clean meat, fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables are so incredibly more tasty than what you find in the shops where they have been treated or stored for a longer period.

Taste for Chocolate is one thing that never goes away, but again, it is about the amounts you eat, and chocolate can be healthy as well.

Coca Cola I stopped drinking decades ago and as well most sugar pops, and fast food to, and it doesnt taste at all anymore, unless you have been hiking in the mountains for a day or two, then you start dreaming about hamburgers, sausages, and whatever food that has the fat needed.

For a happy feeling as said, nothing beats clean fresh food and exercise, but is it fun? Not really, but it is a good life

You are a definite candidate for the phrase "Get a life" because you obviously don't have one right now

It's a question of preferences and lifestyle. Being happy – which includes having fun – is a great way to longevity. You can be happy, and have fun, without smoking; without need of alcohol – even that alcohol might actually be healthy in smaller lot for people aged above 40 years, which multiple scientific studies has proved – healty food can also be gourmet dishes; if we are happy, we don't need drugs to escape from this "world"; sex is actually healthy, so more sex could also be (much) more healthy...

I'm (still) happy, and more happy since I gave up smoking; enjoying a glass of wine, or two, with my gourmet dinner, but I don't drink alcohol when I'm having a fun night in the town preferably twice a week; I really ejoy my realtive healthy, mainly Mediterranean-style, great tasting meals😋; I've tried drugs, last time cannabis in Easter 1970, but I don't need it, I'm (much) more happy without it; still ejoy (lots) of healthy sex...

Change of lifestyle – which can be done in small lots, just you have the gust – might solve the view of happiness is only unhealthy stuff...:whistling:

I watch them driving past anything up to 80/90 mph on a country road.....on their phones......overtaking on blind sections.

Had a car upside down outside the front gate last year (Brit as it happens)....nope, no biking for me.

Don't know about my 'spiritual poverty', but I quite enjoy my sex, drugs and R&R, along with all the other stupid sh!t I did, that I somehow survived.  Builds character, and I've told, 'I'm quite the character' :coffee1:

Their mistake was making it a lifestyle instead of simply a hobby.  And not choosing wisely, fun vs addictive substance.   That includes alcohol, and one of the worse.
