A construction worker lost his life after being run over by a pile driver vehicle, under which he had been resting during his lunch break. The incident occurred at around 13:30 on 3 August, at a construction site in Ban Bung district, Chonburi province.

Police were alerted to the scene at a 15-rai site in Moo 1, Nong Chak subdistrict, where pile-driving work was underway. Pol. Sub-Lt. Anan Chalermwatthanakorn from Ban Bung Police Station, along with emergency responders and a medical examiner from Ban Bung Hospital, attended the site.

At the scene, officers found the lifeless body of a male construction worker lying beneath the heavy pile-driving vehicle. His legs and upper body bore extensive crush injuries, with severe lacerations and bruising visible on the whole body. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased has not yet been formally identified. A national ID card found on his person was written in Burmese script, suggesting he was a migrant labourer from Myanmar.

According to 29-year-old Theeraphong, the driver of the pile driver, the machine had been parked since 11:30 for the lunch break. He returned at 13:30, to resume operations and had been operating the pile driver for approximately 10 minutes before moving the vehicle to a second piling position. It was at this point that a fellow worker ran over to alert him that someone had been fatally run over beneath the machine.

“I was shocked,” said Theeraphong. “The engine was running loudly, and we were driving piles into the ground. I couldn’t imagine anyone would be under the vehicle.”

Authorities believe the victim had sought shade beneath the pile driver to escape the midday heat and had fallen asleep, unaware of the machine restarting. Investigators expressed surprise that he had not woken despite the noise of the engine and the pile-driving work taking place above him.

Police documented the scene and have taken Mr Theeraphong in for further questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. The body of the deceased has been transferred to Ban Bung Hospital for autopsy and formal identification.

A two hour lunch break, I wonder where he slept!

I'd say this is tops so far this year for Darwin Award. Even worse than typical nap on railroad tracks...
