used Skype for decades but now it is gone

It's not gone for everyone. If you had existing credit with no time out still remaining on the old Skype, Teams has a link to Skype to use it all up. Some of us still have years of use left on it!

You no longer get 100 minutes per month per person on Microsoft 365. Teams is more for business. Skype is being discontinued

Whats App and similar are FREE to others who have the app.

MyTello has worked OK for me to UK.

Mytello is great and cheap to landlines and mobile numbers anywhere. It's better than Yolla . I like it.

And me

To replace Skype I use Viber on both pc and mobile phone as I did with Skype.

You can sync with mobile phone to place phone numbers into your Viber app, albeit including country codes.

If both caller and receiver both have the Viber app, you can do a video call just like with Skype, Messenger and LINE.

and how does that help the OP call landlines........unless you are talking about paying for Viber out?

I had the same question when Skype was discontinued, I did quite a lot of research on the alternatives (most of which have already been mentioned in this thread) but I ended up going for mytello. It works well, calls to UK and Australia are about the same price as Skype (the US even cheaper) and I've found the audio quality with mytello much better than Skype. It works in any country so I'm happy with the choice I made.

I've been using VoipBuster in such cases for years. Often cheaper than Skype and it let's you display a registered mobile or landline phone number you are calling from.

Anyone tried using Mytello to call 0800 or 0300 numbers in the UK? No detail on their website.

i use my mobile phone (Samsung) to call landlines or any other phone numbers.

I use the web based Skype.

Not sure what happens when the credit expires though.

You are referring to the old Microsoft 365 Skype Plan whereas some of us still have legacy Skype credit plans that predated Microsofts 365s coming into existence. The latter credit plans require remaining credit to be used at least every 180 days to remain active. So a few cents every 180 days could mean several years usage still remains. After that I will consider switching to MyTello like you.

There is a Skype dialpad on the Microsoft Teams app. I found that out today and could call using my Skype balance that I thought was forfeited. (stolen)

Did you not get an email from Microsoft explaining this back in May or thereabouts........?

(and mentioned in some of the threads on here)

I missed it. The email reminder came yesterday but it did not  explain how to log onto Skype but "Google was my Friend"

How do you keep your balance active?

It’s simple. Do any of the following and your Skype Credit balance will be active for another 180 days:

- Call any phone (landline or mobile) - even if the call lasts for just one second.
- Send an SMS message direct from Skype.

Yolla’s been pretty good for me too.

Wish I’d topped up before they closed Skype.

How do you do that now that Skype is dead.  Have tried Teams with my ex Skype account but cannot see any way to make a phone call. only SMS/chat!

From the original email I received -

Here’s how to get started:

  • Log in to the web portal or Teams Free with your Skype credentials.
  • Access the Skype Dial Pad and continue using your Skype paid services.

I saved the page to a favourite so I can go straight there when I need to -

Yes on pc as per my screenshot. I don't use it on android for a long time. However I think the app is dead and you would have to get to it the same way via a browser

Are you using your Skype sign in?

Takes me (eventually after having a code sent to my email) to - https://calling.web.skype.com/

Note that the screenshot log in I saved says to "continue to Skype" .....

Just tried to use a normal Microsoft account log in page and it doesn't seem to get there.....

I did use my Skype sign in on the PC and eventually was taken to Teams but it only offers a chat option (closing shortly) and no Skype reference/pad!

Thanks for the help so far, any idea what I should do next?

I presume you have credit left as if not I don't think you can?

You don't have the original email from them which has direct links?

Search for Skype web portal. When I just did that it came up with https://secure.skype.com as the first result and then try getting in through there. It took me to the login as per my earlier screenshot. Otherwise I am out of ideas - sorry.

Thanks,

Yes I have credit and the original e-mail.  Will try again tomorrow on my desktop.
