No it's not, beccause she was offered first refusal by Big Machine Record and passed. Had she taken up that offer she would have paid far less than 360 million USD which she paid AFTER the masters were sold to Disney's investment firm.

 

Of course none of this would have happened at all if she had been smart and put a few words in the contract that secure ownership of her masters, as some other, smarter aritsts do.

In fact Taylor Swift was offered the masters without paying anything,  the offer that was on the table was that she sign back on to the same record label and if she produced a new album, she'd receive back one of her masters albums and so on for each new album she made.

 

So she didn't have to pay anything to buy back her old masters, but ended up paying 360 million USD.. 

 

The fact that she had to buy back her own music, which she made, merely illustrates how dumb she really is. Outsmarted by a small time male record manager. She should never have been in that position in the first place that her masters were not hers, but she was stupid enough to sign a bad record deal.

That's precisely it, it happened so many times before, a smart person in the industry would surely not make the same mistake. Olivia Rodrigo for instance made sure when she signed with Geffen that she retains ownership of her masters. So did Rita Ora. I guess some artists are not that smart.
