Putting all your money in someone else's name is probably a bad idea.

Actually it's the worst idea.

  • A sad story, but after losing all that property through bad or dodgy deals, the wife is working as a property broker?

Learnt from experience that legal action in thailand is a very slippery slope, firstly being a foreigner is the first strike against you,the second strike is legal representatives seem to be dodgy and strike three the judge tends to discriminate against foreigners, with the police always more partial to their own gains. This does not lead to a good result.

They say it started with a boundary dispute, how come? All boundaries are recorded and officially stamped at the local government land office. They wouldn't have been able to register the land if it encroached of another person's.

I'm not an expert on Thailand, but in the Usa there can be grey areas.

If for example, you build a fence on a neighbors property and it stays there long enough you can argue to a judge that it has become your property through usage.

Or, if a stream feeds your well, you can argue that the stream is jointly owned because it's required for your farm. That leads to the issue of whether you can access the neighbors land and maintain the stream, etc.

You can see something similar here in the courts decision here where they upheld the property sale on the basis of the buyers innocence. They did not know so we can't now punish an innocent party even if technically the sale was fraudulent.

That's why I never liked neighbors coming around my land in the Usa without being invited over. They usually had some sort of issue and seemed to be looking for ways to wiggle into my business.

Nobody on their right mind would withdraw almost their entire pension pot to fund legal fees in a case like this. The tax alone makes this infeasible.

Look on the bright side; he'll feel like he's quids in when his UK state pension kicks in next year!

He gave her too much freedom with his money... sad.. the wife must be from a nefarious and dubious background - who seem to have access to 'black money' - and loan sharks + scammers and low life seedy lawyers - all a very very bad combination for him,....

Keep safe everyone... cut off any seedy woman or girlfriend you have....or you will lose your pants, fortune - or even your life... He is lucky to have kept his life - no use killing him since his wealth is gone and he is already 65... LOL

Yeah she wasn't very smart looking after her own properties was she ?? He should have done what a lot of expats recommend and that is rent and not buy and also he should   have invested his money back home in England where it is secure.

Every Thai has access to loan sharks and 'black money'.

If he had kept his assets in the UK and rented a nice house, he'd be way better off.

Maybe if he had taken out a 30-year lease on the home, whose plot of land he could not legally own, the situation might have been less drastic ?

One wonders if competent independent legal advice was sought in the case of any of the transactions and disputes.  After all, a lot was at stake.  And he was initially well-off.

wife would be my ex wife fast if she borrowed 34K pounds without me knowing and used properties I paid for as collaterals

If you had left a 100 GBP per month pension and your wife was now earning a salary, would you really kick her out that quickly?

Always better to get them with a large age gap.
The older ones have seen it all before and she appears to have outsmarted him.

My thoughts exactly. Shoulhav had a thick younger one.

I always wondered how these old <deleted> could marry these uneducated Issan women and move to the village. I just do not get it. It must be a reflection on the miserable life of the <deleted>.

I travelled to Thailand and back three times after meeting my future wife and buying her house, it was already half built when I met her.

During these times I met and made friends with Farangs of different nationalities.

I had a choice, many of these friends had houses built and put in their wife's name. My then girlfriend is beautiful, comes from a good family, is very well educated with university/college degrees after being in full time education till she was 23 years old.

My choice was staying the rest of my life in the UK with no chance of meeting a girl with any of these attributes.

I have had twenty years of happy marriage now, was I just lucky? After very much thought, and being only a working class guy  after being a professional musician, a private investigator and truck driver, I sold my house in the UK and well, you know the rest.

I'm happy for you that it worked out....

I've been here since 2008... similar story.

Many turned out to be not so lucky

I've always understood that as the basic rule in Thailand: never invest more than you can easily walk away from.

My wife and I keep our finances completely separate, almost all of mine are back in the USA, and only accessible by me. But what kind pension is "£100" monthly? Yikes!

Some others who have never been rich may well just get that amount?

Frozen as if

There are a lot of guys like him here. I lived in Chiang Mai and my neighbor in the condo next door and his gf kept having loud arguments. I put my ear to the wall a couple times out of curiosity and they were always arguing about money. They eventually moved out and I don't know what became of them.

And yet again I see someone with more than enough dosh to live the life of Reilly losing it because they wanted even more.

Can he walk around naked with an erection too? We call him the beanpole.

I am in the main topless in my own home, which of course belongs to my family but when visiting other friends I always jave a shirt on but it causes no concern or no one has ever mentioned it and have had 2 granddaughters who are grown up.
There is always one who think he is a smart alec, right?

I've been working on that, with family and friends to help her find a lawyer and navigate probate.

Mine and the wife's situation is similar to yours, she wouldn't be able to get any of my investments if I die before her because they're in the US and she's not a US citizen. My broker advised me to form a trust--which I did, and also the lawyer I dealt with was willing--for a fee, to sell ALL assets in the US and transfer the funds to my wife's Thai bank account. My broker told me prior to forming the trust, that since she's not a US citizen the accounts would be frozen and more than likely end up going to the government.......something I definitely don't want to happen. I went the lawyer route because I don't have any relatives that could help with this.

Put a shirt on. It's inappropriate around young female relatives and offputting to guys unless you are outside drinking or something like that. If you can't take the heat, get a fan.

Casual nudity in Thailand families is generally normal.

Many are used to sleeping 3 generations in the same room.

And they all seem to think walking into the toilet while you're having a shower or poop is OK.

I was traumatised my first couple of years with a Thai family.

Well at least they didn't get their heads kicked in yet like that other similar story a few months ago.

Could be. Maybe you can share these with us.

This is what happens when an intelligent man marries village swede. How many times have I seen big money wasted by fools. I'm amazed they are still together and wouldn't be surprised if the 'extended family' weren't behind it all. I spent many years living in Thailand and I've seen tragedy

When you let a Thai lady ( wife ) get involved with money 💰 🤑

They think they know better  ways to improve their wealth

Unfortunately greed probably plays a part in this story plus getting scammed

I have sympathy for the guy learning the hard way of doing  business

in Thailand 😱

Why would you do business in a country where you don't, read, write and speak the language

And of course don't understand the laws.

Only if you are a dumb <deleted> who listens to a Thai woman with no financial acumen and has too much money to lose.

Suck it up!
