US goods trade deficit widens sharply in July

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. trade deficit in goods widened sharply in July as imports surged, suggesting trade could be a major drag on economic growth in the third quarter.

The goods trade gap soared 22.1% to $103.6 billion last month, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau said on Friday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the goods trade deficit would rise to $89.45 billion.

Imports of goods jumped $18.6 billion to $281.5 billion. Goods exports dipped $0.1 billion to $178.0 billion.

Yeah, looks like another winning strike.

Imports increase, while exports decline, because trade partners get the goods, they usually got from the US, elsewhere.

And that will only amplify in the future.

Donald Trump must add one more defeat to the long list of lawsuits he’s filed in recent months, as a federal judge just dismissed his $50 million case against famed Watergate journalist Bob Woodward.

And that’s not his only “victory” this month:

Maryland judges lawsuit — Tossed. A Trump-appointed judge called it “potentially calamitous.”

NY civil fraud case — The half-billion fine was voided, but the fraud verdict still stands. He’s banned from running companies, barred from loans, and the AG is appealing to bring the penalties back.

So much for winning.
Trump’s a loser!

Of course, the economy of all countries in the world will suffer at the moment, as that is Trump's aim.

But let's wait and see who suffers the most by the end of this year.

My prediction is that countries who get hit with high tariffs will keep exporting to the US, because it's the American who pays for those taxes, but in the short term will find other countries for their own imports, and in the long term will find other export markets for their own goods.

Not sure what you're talking about, because every day there is more evidence that I'm not wrong.

The info released today by the US government, was just a single example of that

‘Illegal’: Trump rocked by massive ruling

A US appeals court has ruled that many of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which have upended global trade, were illegal -- but allowed them to remain in place for now, giving him time to take the fight to the Supreme Court.

Worth looking at this video link, where you can see how happy business people in the US are with Trump's policies on immigration.

Farmers had to let $2 billion crops rotting in the fields because no harvesters.

Winning.

Smart move.  In the USA you-know-who could very well halt the construction until he gets what he wants, we also know who's bidding he does.  They question the stability of the US and the tacit alliance with The Bear.  And rightly so IMO.

The real damage is being done in the bond and forex markets.

US Treasury bonds that used to be snapped up as a safe haven are now being spurned by investors. China and Japan are not rolling over maturing bonds, which used to be almost automatic. Demand for German bonds is soaring.

Central banks are reducing their holdings of USD. They are seeking other currencies regarded as more stable.

The Fed is between a rock and a hard place. If it reduces interest rates, it risks stoking inflation, already on a knife edge due to tariffs. If it holds the line, job growth figures will get even more dismal, as will capital investment in new industries.

I suppose winning can be found in cheaper exports, except other countries are turning their back on American goods and services.

Russia 'makes a mockery of Trump' with its intention to extend the war in Ukraine

Good morning! After a solid hour of computer updates – I kid you not, an hour, during which I pondered the total reliance we now have on technology, and its various drawbacks, and the merits of returning to a medieval society – we are ready to get stuck in.

It’s been two weeks since Donald Trump met with Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders at the White House, and said Vladimir Putin had agreed to hold a peace summit with the Ukrainian leader within a fortnight. That has not happened. Which, to be frank, is to nobody’s great surprise.

Instead we have fresh comments from the Russian army’s chief of the general staff, Valery Gerasimov, suggesting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will continue through the European autumn. That would mean a continuation of the fighting until pretty much the end of the year, at least.

“The implementation of the tasks of the (invasion) by the Joint Group of Troops will continue by conducting offensive actions,” Gerasimov said, according to Russia’s Defence Ministry.

Because of laws like the Arms Export Control Act and security concerns, advanced U.S. warships (like destroyers and submarines) are not built for foreign governments.

I guess the AUKUS pact to sell Australia secondhand Virginia-class nuclear submarines, and the joint development of new SSN-AUKUS  submarines, does not exist in your world.

So Australia parting with $1.07 billion already was for nothing.

The last time I looked, nuclear submarines are classed as warships, and quite advanced ones.
