American Language Teacher Arrested for Assaulting Minor in Class

Featured Replies

The police need to do a proper investigation with interviews of other students,

staff, background of teacher and affected student etc…

lots of ignorant remarks in this thread who have no idea of what teaching is like in thailand or anywhere

evidence or lack of will determine guilt or innocence….this story should never have gotten published as it seems totally incomplete investigation by the police as well as no mention of what’s the school own internal investigation revealed if they even did one….

Of course that guy is not a real teacher. Could have been a truck driver a mason an electrician a salesman a hobo in homeland. We all know what this native English teachers stand for. Wanting to stay in Thailand, but not having the finances to f and blow around. So the only solution is English teacher without the skills or education needed for the job. Although I believe it is best not to make any body contact with students, putting your hand on someones head in Thailand is considered disrespectful.

In Thailand, it is considered very offensive and rude to touch someone on the head, even as a friendly gesture like patting a child
. This cultural norm is deeply rooted in Buddhist beliefs, which hold the head as the most sacred part of the body, and the spiritual energy (

Cultural reasons for avoiding head contact
  • The head is sacred: The head is seen as the highest and holiest part of the body, and touching it is an affront to a person's dignity and spiritual energy.
  • The feet are lowly: In contrast, the feet are considered the lowest and least clean part of the body. This is why pointing your feet at a person or a Buddha image is also highly disrespectful.
  • Maintaining harmony: Thais value social harmony and avoiding conflict. Touching someone's head, even with harmless intentions, can lead to uncomfortable misunderstandings.

You obviously don't have the beginnings of an idea of the qualifications which a Native English Speaking Teacher needs to prove to 1) be employed by a school, 2) get a visa, 2) get a work permit.

With her consent is also illegal.  Maybe the embassy will provide him with a supply of KY.  Otherwise he is going to be in serious discomfort for a long time.   Farang play with Thai baby then go to Thai prison where everyone is her uncle.  555

The article is not clear which language the American was teaching.

They should give the scum a year or 2 in the Hilton before kicking him out.

And here we have yet another member with a weird, repressed fixation about bum buggery.

You obviously don't have the beginnings of an idea on how extremely low the Thai Education Ministry sets the bar, their lack of oversight and auditing of the Khrusapa, and the inconsistency of the Thai Labour Office when it vets applications for teacher work permits.

Or maybe you do.

If he worked for a private Language Institute the requirements are even lower.

That's right. Probably he got a work permit for teaching Suaheli. 🥳

The locals English i so poor because the standards of English teaching is so poor. Many aren't fluent or can't speak much of it anyway. My daughter speaks English much better than her English teacher, and they are only given papers to copy English words and sentences, not knowing what the words mean.

My friend owns and runs an English school near me and has been in the business for decades, taught in the US as well, and he gets many students in his school because the local schools aren't doing an effective job teaching the language, so their parents send them there.

Many of the teachers he hires have degrees or at least Tefl's. I helped there because I'm a native English speaker and he wanted the students to hear someone without an accent, as many of his teachers are from the UK or Cameroon, who were taught by UK teachers and also have an accent. No matter what credentials a teacher has, as long as he understands how to give lessons and speaks clear, fluent English,  the students are still learning more English than their regular schools teach. We can't assume this teacher's ability, but just that he's a weirdo that shouldn't be around children.

That is true, and it rather sounds as if he was working in such an establishment; mind you I was replying to @vangrop's fairly incoherent blanket comment on English teachers (I often wonder whether such comments are sparked by not having been able to get a job)!

Strange that he behaved this way though, presumably he was aware that there was CCTV in the classroom!

Actually Africa leads the list, with many other countries similar as to stats to each other.

May I ask where you're from claiming you have no accent?

So damaging, so predatory. Glad I got out of the racket when I did.

The untold story is all the damage that lazy, unqualified *teachers* do on a daily basis. 90% of western teachers both M and F do not belong anywhere near Thai kids. Their only interest is a paycheck and a visa extension

New Jersey. My parents were from Brooklyn, which has a slightly different accent they both lost. 4 of my children were born in Texas, but all sound like me besides the ya'll they use. I have never be told I have an accent, although I do sound like others from New Jersey, which does sound  different than others from the US, meaning the obvious Boston and Midwestern .Edit: I guess it could be considered an accent to others, as this link shows, the Northern type..........https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_English

So, nobody of your family speaks genuine English without an accent, right?

I'd say about equal to UK from my experience here over three decades except US has 360M and UK what a quarter of that population?

The predators I worked with were from UK and Canada. Both male and gay. I quit one school in protest. The other I left as it was EOY. I also worked in another school and I suspect two were on that game... a closet gay and another man I think he liked girls (very very cagey). Both UK.

As I edited above, there are accents. The most easily understood accent worldwide is the American accent.

No, a eg Texan American English (sort of English) is horrible for students to understand. (Outside UK or IRL)

Texans, some,  have a drawl, but it's easily understood.

Yes,  we all speak genuine English, the American kind, which is the most easily understood and native speaking English.

Not for me and my UK and IRL friends. We would like to hear him speaking with subtitles.🤣

My mother's family is from Ireland, and she learned English in Brooklyn schools and from her parents, and she sounded like everyone else from her area, like my dad, brother and I, although I was born in New Jersey. Authentic English, genuine, is English spoken by native English speakers, accents aside, some of which aren't easy for some to understand, as I noted in that link.

Quite so. I had a 24-year-old female teacher from the Northwest of England tell me, after only one term at the school for BOTH of them, that my 5 year-old was an underachiever.

Why did you embrace "the racket" BTW?
