Walking Street's LED Upgrade Divides Pattaya Opinions

Pattaya’s Walking Street is now home to an eye-catching LED display, a move designed to enhance the city's allure as a premier tourist destination. While city officials tout this as a step towards modernising public spaces, not everyone is thrilled with the upgrade.

The new installation aims to bolster Walking Street's reputation as a global nightlife hotspot. However, opinions are divided. Some admire the spectacle, while others argue the city should prioritise addressing longstanding issues like tangled cabling and persistent traffic congestion.

To mitigate concerns over safety, officials confirmed the LEDs will be dimmed to 35% brightness at night, but this decision has led to questions about the project’s financial wisdom. Critics are particularly vocal about the costs, with some questioning the logic of dimming a feature that reportedly cost millions of Thai Baht.

Concerns over city priorities were voiced by residents, with one noting, “The cables in this area should be removed; it’s embarrassing.” Another added, “After upgrading the streets for walkers, the shops should also look better.”

Despite such criticisms, the display has received positive reviews from tourists and locals. One onlooker remarked, “Is this a new image? It’s beautiful, like it popped out of the screen.” Nonetheless, practical problems persist, such as motorcycle taxis obstructing pedestrian flow at the street’s entrance. A visitor commented, “It’s beautiful, but the entrance is quite crowded.”

City officials hope the LED project will elevate Pattaya's status as a modern tourist hub, enhancing its international appeal. However, the controversy underscores the city's challenge: balancing aesthetic attractions with functional improvements.

As Walking Street continues to draw millions of visitors annually, this new feature may enhance its landmark status. Yet, convincing sceptical locals that the investment is beneficial beyond aesthetics remains pivotal. Pattaya must navigate these dynamics carefully to ensure both visual appeal and infrastructural progress.

Looks more like an eyesore.

You can see how it is in action in this vdo clip.

Begins at 1:43 to about 2:40 in the clip.

Haven't seen it myself yet, but it surely must be an attraction. Wonder how long it will take before a motorcycle or baht bus driver, distracted into looking at it, ploughs into a group also looking up at it?

I don't care one way or the other about the sign being put up, what I DO find objectionable is the city paying for it. If the Walking Street businesses want such a gaudy sign then they should erect it at their expense. Every other business on the planet pays for their own business signs.

I was thinking how news outlets have to warn everyone when a pending segment contains flashing photography, presuming it has a negative effect on some types. Now one can convulse both indoors and outdoors on  Walking Street.

On the bright side, they got the spelling right. :coffee1:
