  • Until now, the requirement to deposit 800,000 baht was only for the initial visa application, but for renewals, proof of monthly income of 65,000 baht in the Thai account was sufficient. I'm not aware

  • How do you change office when the office is dependant upon the location of your living accomodation? Are you suggesting he ups sticks and move ?

  • Absolutely what I would do.    Be sure to have a one year statement from the bank showing the monthly deposits from abroad, as well as copy of the bank book and bank letter confirming the ac

Yes.

The national law is definitely two months.

But your local office rules you. Literally.

Dr. Jack has pointed out (correctly of course) that there is no need to show where funds came from (for extensions using money-in-the-bank method).

Another related point is that there is no need to show how you spend the 800K baht during the year, although there have been some reports in the distant past of rogue Immo officers (Prachinburi?) who have asked applicants about this.

It is nonsense.  The purpose of the 800k in a Thai bank is to show (1) Financial where with all; and (2) That you have a significant sum to tap into if there are outstanding hospital or legal fees.

That's the same as the 65K-baht-a-month approach.  They don't (shouldn't) care how you spend it; just that you are financially in good standing, and can cover unanticipated large expenses.

I always thought this was crazy as you can't tap into the 800k without losing your visa and right to stay.

It makes perfect sense.  If you have to tap into it, and use up all your funds, they don't want you here anymore.  You can no longer protect yourself (or Thailand) from you experiencing destitution.

Local office says 3 months

Can you point me to an official source or the law where it says 2 months in Thai or English please.

Thank that was my understanding, but my original request was what is the souce of that data, I was just told by an expat friend who deals with another province.

As it now appear they want 3 months and one day which I will fail by one day , can  pay for a 60 day extension to visit wife and then apply for a retirment extension, the extra cost is no concern but i am trying to simplyfy my affairs due to health issues, wife helping family in anothe rprovince, does she have to attend to get a 60 day extension? I did it once in teh Covid period but unsure of what to do.

I appreciate all your invaluable responses and I know that local office are in a Monopoly position and I have little choise to follow their demands even if contrary to  law, i think involving a lawyer may apart from costs create lasting friction which is the last thing I need as I may have to deal with same staff in my remaining few years here.

So if they refuse can I do a 60 extension? I do not wish to travel , leave the country due to medical appointements otherwise I'd be tempted to deal with an embassy.

For 60 day extension to visit wife she needs to attend immigration with you.

my dad's attorney said regarding that: (1) the 65,000 baht per month pathway isn't available, so my dad would need to do the 800,000 deposit pathway;

In this context, "lawyer" is generally the same as "agent," as to how they interact with Immigration.  Brown-envelope money greases the wheels / skips "requirements" thrown at us DIYers.  And, agents do not file extensions based on monthly-income - at least, I have not seen cases of this reported.

Just curious there @Rob Browder how many threads are you going to post your rant about "brown envelopes" under the table payments etc on? 😕 😞

Only those where it is applicable- though I don't read here daily, so may hit a few threads at once, periodically.

I don't want people being naive, then getting smacked in the head with reality - like I was, when my Thai wife and I went in to get a 100% legit extension some years back.  Since that horrible experience (worse for her, than me), I learned how the system works.

Some seem to still think it's all "on the up and up," which could lead to bad outcomes for them down the road.

The source was from Immigrations website which used to post their orders online but have since removed them.
If you didn't download them when available, then unfortunate, and of course we can no longer post them here as a PDF file.
The screenshot I posted earlier is from Immigration order 35/2561.

They are still available to download in PDF format from the partner forum of AN, the Thaiger.

It's a common theme in your posts.

Best to advise (you have the expertise) rather than continual corruption theme.

Boring at best.
