Importing a catamaran to Thailand for personal joy..

Featured Replies

I love sailing and windsurfing.

Since maintenance quality is not to the standard I would like to see and rental options are pretty limited with rental fees exceeding rental costs in Europe by way more than 100% for incomplete equipment I consider importing a catamaran by myself.

Now, it seems it is no problem to import my wind surfing gear from Europe to Thailand (with Lufthansa I can just declare it as personal luggage as I travel with sports equipment and pay a little bit extra to get it delivered to Thailand from Germany with my flight) one would guess that it would not be a problem to import a catamaran as well.

But since the catamaran cannot be carried by a plane I would need to organize handling and shipping by container.

The list purchase price in Germany would be about €17,000, let's say including everything it would be about 800,000 Baht.

As I intend to use it for my personal joy only is there any import taxes to be paid?

I would also consider it importing to Vietnam. The coast north east of Ho Chi Minh City has way better wind patterns during all of the year. So if anyone knows the process of getting personal equipment imported to Vietnam please let me know.
But preferably I would import it to Thailand rather than to Vietnam as I live here and it would be certainly easier to access and use it here in Thailand.

Have you really searched all options in TH, or ordering from CH ?

Some interesting things on FB marketplace.

Yeah, FB marketplace - but I would love to have a fully equipped Topcat (made in Germany). I could not find a such...

Between Facebook and Bahtsold (and others?), I'd look for something local before I'd spend the money to import anything.

just to clarify:

I do not want a yacht style catamaran. To fly in less than one meter over the surface of the water hanging in a trapez/sitting in a harness is an unbeatable feeling, unmatched.

So only sports catamaran like https://topcat.de/en/

are considered. Can not find any in all these available online market places...

I've seen lots of Hobies and NACRAs for sale in Thailand.  (Pattaya and Jomtien).  Pretty good pricing on the 2nd hand market.  But you may have to watch the ads for a few months before one comes available.  Possibly longer for that exact right one...  Then pull the trigger fast because the good deals don't stay up long.

There are also some boat shops that always have 2nd hand stock, but not always the exact right model.  I imagine you'd find even more in Samui and/or Phuket.

I'm not familiar with the TopCat brand.

You do realise you would have to pay import duty on it? No idea what the rate would be but it would not be insignificant.

I'm hoping someone else chimes in with more sites in more locales.  I bought 2 kayaks, an inflatable (with trailer) and 3 small outboard motors from Bahtsold.  Purchased over a period of a couple of years.  I watched the site and picked up stuff that interested me.

Being a little long in the tooth, I really wanted a MacGregor 26' with about a 50 HP engine, but none came up until my contract to work in Bangkok was almost over.  I'm a little old to get full use out of a Hobie Cat.  20-30 years ago, we loved them.
