Toyota troubles with EV's

Featured Replies

In the UK, Toyota's profit has tumbled by 96% largely due to the ZEV mandate in the UK.  This mandate sets targets on the volume of cars sold that must be zero emission.

Targets:

  • 2024: 22% of new cars and 10% of new vans must be zero-emission.

  • 2030: 80% of cars and 70% of vans.

  • 2035: 100% of both.

Never get 0% in my Sealion 7 as all the hot air that comes out of wife's mouth when I have the car in 'sports mode' and press on the go-fast pedal. Zooom zooom.

That's a common problem with EV's, it's called nagivation, no gps required.

Have the same problem.  Wife not understanding winding mountain road speed limits are just a suggestion.   Or why don't bother with 120 on straight highway when legal to.

One is actually driving, the other, 'we'll get there, when we get there'.   She doesn't know how lucky she is, that my back can't take hours on a motorcycle any more :cheesy:

On topic, Toyota is just so far behind, along with enlightened customers aren't riding the reputation coat tail any more, and they lost that trust a long time ago.

Instead of hearing, 'I bought it, because it's a Toyota', now it's 'I bought it, because it's not a Toyota or VW".  :cheesy:

Seemingly reluctantly legacy Japanese auto makers do not fully support substitutes for ICE cars such as EV's but with exotic hydrogen fuel cells, hybrids and improved efficiency for ICE. I assume the hybrids would have less impact on auto sales than EV's in Japan given the lack of EV charging stations.

Allegedly, reasons for focus on Japan's non-EV's include consumer preferences for compact cars, challenges with home charging for apartment dwellers. Albeit, Japan is a major fossil fuel importer. Yet, Japan is a world leader in solar PV capacity.

I think there is a risk in Japanese auto makers switching their cars to HEV.

The owners are likely to find they like the silence of that one km range on electric and likely to want more.

They will probably buy a BEV next from “New Toyota” (aka BYD).
