Police in Pattaya have staged an emergency response drill to prepare for potential active shooter incidents at a major hotel. The exercise, held at the Royal Opal Theater of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group, simulated evacuation and defensive responses under the “Run, Hide, Fight” approach. The drill aimed to boost readiness and reassure hotel staff on how to respond in the event of a real attack.

The operation was led by Pol. Lt. Col. Siriwat Katchamat, Deputy Superintendent of Pattaya City Police Station, alongside Pol. Lt. Col. Suchart Dusadee and Pol. Lt. Col. Suwinai Kuibamrung. They were supported by patrol officers from Pattaya City Police Station. Training focused on both immediate action and coordination between police and private security personnel.

Active shooter preparedness has gained attention in Thailand as public safety remains a priority in busy tourist areas. Hotels, being potential high-risk venues, are required to strengthen staff awareness of escape routes, hiding strategies and last-resort defence. The “Run, Hide, Fight” method is internationally recognised as a standard for managing mass shooting scenarios.

The exercise highlighted practical scenarios where participants were trained to evacuate quickly, conceal themselves effectively, or, if no other option existed, defend against an attacker. By involving hotel staff directly, the drill aimed to close gaps in readiness and ensure coordinated action between civilians and police. Officers noted that preparedness helps minimise casualties and confusion in high-stress situations.

Police officials emphasised that such rehearsals are crucial to maintaining safety in a city that welcomes large numbers of domestic and international visitors. The collaboration between police forces and the hospitality sector is expected to continue, with more drills planned to adapt to evolving security challenges. The readiness demonstrated is intended to increase public confidence in law enforcement and private sector preparedness.

Meanwhile on the roads ... lots of dead and injured.

I never forget when I lived in a suburb of Bangkok, their was a car thief in the area. A local policeman lived 100 metres from our town house. One morning he went to his car and noticed forced marks on the cars windows. So around 2 am he sat in his balcony with his weapon at the ready. So along comes the perp, the BIB let fly with 3-4 shots. When he went downstairs there was no perp only 4 slug holes in his Toyota pick up.
