How many lives have been saved with the 30 baht medical program.  How about all the micro loans to farmers.

what I remember is that when Thaksin was PM things were booming,  people were happy.
Famers were being helped for the first time. Famers loved him!

Yes, 3 months of deaths due to a crack downs on drugs which corrupt cops were killing competition or to keep people from talking instead of arresting them. It was on TV almost daily, a terrible time.

1. The 30 baht health scheme is good but unlike the UK's NHS, it doesn't cover adequately all diseases and conditions.

If someone gets a serious disease, they will often have to pay, often beyond the means of the poor.

Secondly, state hospitals often mean long waits for treatment which is why private clinics abound in Thailand, frequently opposite the government hospital! These clinics are usually run by doctors from the state hospital who make far more from their private clinics than their government salary.

I don't want to sound cynical but it's not in the doctor's interest to have all the patients quickly seen to in the government hospital!

2. The OTOP scheme started with a bang but soon fizzled out. Why? Because there were so many tambons making the same products, 7,255 to be exact! No way could these sub districts all make different products, consequently competition was fierce between tambons with subsequent failures.  Drinkers may remember the legal sato rice wine produced by many tambons at the time. There was even talk of a 'drinking street' to promote the various tambons' efforts!

3. Thaksin's approach to agriculture was wrong in my view. In my previous post I mentioned his disastrous decision to promote rubber trees, the price of which collapsed years ago.

More recently, I read that he wanted to convert sor por kor land documents into full land deeds, meaning farmers could legally sell their land to anyone, rather than as now with sor por kor land, having to pass it down to their next generation upon death. If able to sell to anyone, I believe poor farmers would soon lose their land to investors and speculators.

Making money from mono crops in Thailand is difficult, especially on small plots, which is what most Thai farmers possess. Some farmers are successful with integrated farming but it requires knowledge and determination, plus a mindset of self sufficiency, not something Thaksin with his mind always on commerce, fully appreciates

Years ago always talk of minor wives etc. Whilst in Dubai a Thai woman called Lydia supposedly his partner. But she's not been mentioned for some time.

Maybe found even a richer gik.

Do your full 1 year prison term like a man, and more people would have respect for you.  You lose the respect of everyone but your most diehard supporters with the prison hospital stunt.

Nope - he's going to do Prison Hospital 2.0.

Lord Buddha, your sarcasm meter has to be readjusted.

Of course, I was being sarcastic.

Can't stand the Shinawatras, scum of the earth, just like the US equivalent of Thaksin, the orange scum in the WH.

As he never was "sick" in any way, since he fled Thailand 15 years ago with all the stolen money.

I don't need to read his history I was living in Thailand at the time.

My wife, her mother and her dad all use the 30 baht program with no problems. My wife just git her teeth cleaned under the program.   It is government run so its not going to be great.

However he was able to get Thailand to pay the IMF loans back 2 years early. GDP went from just under 5 billion to a little over 7 billion. currency reserves increased from 30 billion to over 60 Billion USD. Thailand was humming along.

Never said it was ok to kill people.

He didnt order anyone to kill people.

Ill say it again,  It was a crack down on drugs inwhich police were killing people dealing in drugs to protect their corruption.

Not saying the guy is a good person, what im saying is he did a good job as PM as Thailand had a strong economy. Our company had to turn down projects as we had souch work.  Factories were expanding, allot of foreign investment at the time.

read the history of war on drugs

When the Independent Committee on the Casualties of the 2003 War on Drugs established by the Surayud Chulanont government published its report in 2008, it concluded that 1,372 of the people killed had no drug related records.

More importantly, the chair of the commission concluded that all 2,873 killings should be considered crimes against humanity.

Thaskin responsible  the buck stops at the PM HE gave the order and policy   you need to google all the documents are online including the orders from thasking  so dont tell me he was not responsible for the deaths of innocent people its is thailands shame crimes against humanity

"Lawyers have suggested that Thaksin's drug war might amount to a crime against humanity under Article Seven of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court [ICC], set up in 1992."

Thaksin finds this funny. "I've done nothing wrong!" he laughs. "I just give the policy."
