Airports of Thailand (AOT) has launched the first phase of development at Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport, aiming to double passenger capacity to 6 million annually. The upgrade is designed to strengthen Chiang Rai’s role as a regional hub for air travel and tourism.

This week, Chiang Rai Governor Charin Thongsuk opened the first public seminar for the project at Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort. The event presented objectives and expected benefits of the development, while collecting feedback from government agencies, businesses, local organisations and the media. More than 100 participants attended. AOT has appointed the CRA consultant group to oversee surveys and design in line with strategic goals.

Governor Charin highlighted Chiang Rai’s unique position as Thailand’s northernmost province, with its natural landscapes, cultural diversity and strong transport links. He said the airport expansion will boost tourism growth, support local economic development and raise residents’ quality of life. The project is seen as key infrastructure for long-term sustainable progress.

Wing Commander Somchanok Tiamthiebrat, Director of Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport, said AOT continues to expand major airports to position Thailand as a leading aviation hub in Southeast Asia. He stressed that the Chiang Rai project is vital to meet rising demand following tourism recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The airport currently handles about 3 million passengers annually but faces steady increases. The first-phase works cover three areas, airside facilities, terminal buildings and supporting infrastructure and airport systems. Plans include a new passenger terminal, renovations to the existing terminal, nine new contact aircraft stands and upgrades to utilities and traffic systems. Once completed, the airport will fully meet international standards.

AOT stated that the project aligns with government policy to strengthen aviation, tourism, trade and investment competitiveness. The seminar was also designed to build understanding and participation, with feedback to be incorporated into design and planning. This approach aims to maximise public benefit from the project.
