Khon Kaen police have arrested a Dutch man for stealing an ATM from a shop in the city’s Ban Thum community early on 21 September 2025, at approximately 01:00. The suspect, identified as 6-year Thai resident Mr. Sijtse [surname not provided], was found hiding near the scene after using a car and chain to remove the machine.

The arrest followed a call to local police from a witness, prompting officers from Ban Ped Police Station and the tourist police to respond immediately. At the scene, a black pickup was found with a large chain securing the ATM at its rear. The suspect was located in nearby tall grass and taken into custody for questioning.

During the police interview, Sijtse reportedly said he had previously given his Thai wife more than 10 million baht to open a restaurant and support their household. He claimed a recent argument over insufficient funds prompted him to drive out and commit the theft, by using the pickup, belonging to his wife’s relative, to drag the ATM away from the front of the shop. He stated he has lived in Thailand for six years and resided with his wife in Khon Kaen.

Authorities have charged him with nighttime theft causing damage to property and using a vehicle to facilitate the crime. The bank has also filed an official complaint and police have opposed bail at the investigation stage. Investigators are continuing to examine CCTV footage and vehicle records to determine if anyone else was involved.

Key Takeaways

• Dutch man arrested in Khon Kaen after stealing an ATM with a car and chain.

• Dispute with his Thai wife over finances reportedly motivated the theft.

• Police have charged him and opposed bail while investigation continues.

  • Aaah, yes, the old story...........Foreigner gives wife millions of baht, things go pear shaped.    Oh well, original ending, ATM theft. 😂 I love the Dutch 👍

  • Unpopular opinion.   It's always long timers causing the biggest problems 🙄

  • An old Dutchman attempted to steal an ATM. This sounds like something out of a bad movie.

He has forgotten the PIN number of his debit card. Therefore, this was the only way to get his own money. That's the way they do it in Dutchland, not Deutschland.1698532715486p_800x800.webp.25b65ee8b4b57e954f455b3dbec3b85b.webp

Canabis is legal in Dutchland...

It's not legal , But it's tolerated !!, Cannabis remains a controlled substance in the Netherlands and both possession and production for personal use are still misdemeanors, punishable by fines. Coffeeshops are also technically illegal but are flourishing nonetheless.

Cannabis in the Netherlands is illegal, but is decriminalised for personal use. Recreational consumption of the drug is tolerated, and it is available in coffeeshops.

Gotta give the guy credit for creative thinking. Speaking of movies, there's a great scene in the series "Breaking Bad" about a stolen ATM.

Probably closer to the movie "Barbershop" and ATM plot

Why is it the majority of farangs who are ripped off by their Thai wives are related to the Issan Region.

I think the connection is ex bar girls, if they can sell themselves for years then it is nothing for them to rip off their stupid farang husband.

He should be put in a rehabilitation centre for the abused until he gets his senses back. 😄

So he gave a woman all his money, 10 million baht, and the woman was still not satisfied and asked him for more money.

And another man's life ruined by a woman.

just another normal Farang male/Thai lady(!) relationship in Thailand!

Thanks for the unwarranted insult!

Where did I make any reference to my personal experiences wrt this topic?

Just go to the Thai newspapers/AN and read about similar incidents in Thailand that happen on a regular basis!

What did she spend the money on?    No, the restaurant for sure.

If she has gone through that much money, i would say she is a chronic gambler.

I have seen a number of expats here distraught when they have found out how much money their wives have gambled away.

Because your comment made it sound like it was normal and common, re-read your comment back to yourself and you will know what I mean, you are the one making the insult, otherwise you would know it is not 'normal' .

lock this idiot up

NO look the truth of it is simple

The ATM stole his card so he decided to arrest it and take it to the cop shop but he thought it was going to get away so he chained it to his motor and drove away but sadly the ATM fell apart and he got scared so he left his motor chained up and ran into a field to hide, but this caused alarm in the cop shop because they got beaten to it and the best laid plans were defeated so they arrived at the scene with there guns drawn _ _ _ _

More like how many farangs are fooling themselves by believing a very young attractive woman is with the old git for love and not for their money.

99% of Thai couples are of a similar age just like the rest of the world, why do these idiots think they are the exception to the natural rule.

But it is true many such women are after that big bulge in their pockets.

No not that bulge, the bulge of a wallet, they can spot it a mile away. 😃

Just read two post above your post and tell me it is not common!

It does seem to be more common in Issan, I do admit most of the stories I have been told directly about this are related to Issan women and farangs.

But most of the stores I have heard from farangs is all is OK with their relationships as most Thai women do not come from that region.

This happens all the time in Latin America, even in the USA. The moment you opened your wallet to a Thai women, you are screwed. Her needs will never end. And if she has relatives, every month it will be a new emergency that needs money.

10 million baht for a restaurant that must have been a pretty fancy place maybe he was going for a Michelin star. Sounds like the wife tapped him out and the man got desperate, but an ATM of all things. Of all crimes, this has to be one of the dumbest. The chances of succeeding are just slightly higher than the chances of robbing a bank successfully.

Where is grandpa?

Last time I saw him he had a chain, a crowbar and a balaclava; said he was going to draw some money.

This is odd my wife yesterday asked my advice about investing in a restaurant!

Now where do I buy some chain!

🤔☻☻🤣🤣🤣

Not the first time he did that. We had a few of this happening when I was a security, and it takes some knowledge to pull it off like this.

Haha, bit of a Darwin Awards case here. I mean, how did his deluded mind think this was going to work out properly?

Even if, and it's huge if, he somehow managed to get the ATM somewhere concealed, how are you going to open it without getting sprayed with the nasty ink that goes all over you and the notes so that it all can be traced... including you? There are other security features too that he probably doesn't know about either... much more complicated to open an ATM than just grab an acetylene torch and off you go, oh no.

Bet the cops at that station are having a right good laugh over beers after work about the Dutch numpty foreigner.

Then ink is a major problem, and those ampoules goes off at once the atm is dragged off the wall, or first attempt, so ?

Before they used some special cleaning stuff to clean it off, not sure if they improved it by now.

Really stupid people about stealing a ATM machine from a shop and hoping to get away with it  or driving away with it

It seems in the USA if a politician opens his mouth he is shot, I wonder which persons are the worst the Thai women or the Americans doing the shooting.

It also seems to be a common practice to go to schools and shoot school kids, i suppose there is nothing wrong with that?

I remember I read in news that some Serbs did it in 2007 if I remember well. It also didn't work well

Bullying is very common in American schools. Some of those kids can not take anymore and decide to use guns to defend themselves. The USA has always been a  very divided society in ethnical lines.
