Car dash cam.... something reasonably priced and DIY install?

Featured Replies

My trusty rear view mirror dash cam just shet itself after good service for at least 3 years so looking for something else. Was only a few hundred baht from memory and wasn't awesome but did the job. The only reason I wont buy another one is I have a 6 inch tinted strip at the top of the windscreen and it kind of messed things up. Can anyone send a link or recommend maybe a dash mounted one that I can run the wires or plug into cig lighter outlet in the glove box (2014 Isuzu pick up). That's how the one I have now was set up. Not worried about wiring for rear cameras etc. Just something basic and preferably under 1000 baht.

PS: no motherly advice on the benefits of an expensive cam and professional installation please.

Any help appreciated 🙂

The Xiaomi ones have always been very reliable - I have had more than 5 of them, both in Thailand and the UK.

Also, give serious consideration to the Dash-Cams that also have a rear-facing option.

All dash-cams will come with a USB-C or USB-B connection to use with a USB-12 volt power adapter to plug into the 12-Volt Cig-outlet.

Note: The cam doesn't need to be 'dash-mounted' which may make it more unstable - it can still be mounted lower down on the lower part of the windscreen (so long as it doesn't block too much of your view obviously).

As far as wiring is concerned - looks like you know that already - quite an easy job (IMO) to tuck the cables away and make it look very neat (I just fitted a dash-cam to my fathers car in the UK a few weeks ago).

I really appreciate that advice and the effort you put into your reply. I lost faith in Chinese products over the last few years, most stuff I order on Lazada and co often goes straight in the rubbish these days. But I do love Xiaomi stuff, it just works. I got a tower fan of theirs, smart fan thing operated from and app on the phone and its superb. Will check it out and order tonight. Only thing turns me off a bit the sticky back to attach the unit to the windscreen. I have found with other things they don't seem to last long here in the heat....Come back to your car parked out in the sun and whatever you have attached is on the floor lol. Thanks again for your detailed reply, you really went above and beyond 🙂 I seem to recall you helped me in the past with drones, air soft pistols and even the tower fan from memory, though could be mistaking you for someone else

I clean the windscreen with isopropryl alcohol before applying the clear pad.

My daily (which live out doors and in the direct sun) has not come unstuck since I aplied it 5yrs ago.

No worries - happy to help those with decent questions…
- Dash-cams are import here.

Note the sticky stuff may not always be perfect due to the heat of parked outside a lot… but easily stuck back with 3M dual sided tape (about 1mm thick) onto a very clean interior of the windscreen (clean with an alcohol spray).

I don’t usually go for Chinese stuff either, but the Xiaomi ‘stuff’ has proven reliable.

Thanks again Richard 🙏 Did a bit of resaearch and apparently 70mai not exactly a Xiaomi product but the two companies do have a relationship. In anycase they look like excellent products and Ive ordered the A200 off Lazada from the official 70MAI store. Ticks all the boxes for me 😁 Looks like a ton of counterfeit stuff badged 70MAI, not exactly knocks offs just inferior products with an MAI sticker on them. This might apply to the LF9 pro from reviews I have read. The phone connectivity etc on the A200 looks seamless and smooth like Xiaomi products. Looking forward to getting it 😊 thanks so much once again

Oh one final thing, I see most people install these cameras either in the middle of the screen usually under the mirror somewhere or even over on the drivers side. I if possible would like to mount mine (if no ill effects) on the upper passenger side. Anything remotely in my field of vision when driving I find distracting and also my cig lighter outlet is in the glove box on the passengers side of the car. I assume these things you can not only adjust up and down but they have some sideways movement as well if the unit mounted off center? Maybe it can be adjusted with the phone app?

This is excellent advise, also when you do apply alcohol it's best to turn the air conditioner on with the front windshield defroster on, let it run a few minutes and then attached it to the windshield. This helps remove any moisture on the windshield, which Thailand has high humidity and that will effect the adhesion.

Correct:

For brands Xiaomi owns, like Redmi phones or Xiaomi Auto (XU-7), the products are fully under Xiaomi’s control. That means they have to meet Xiaomi’s internal quality standards, design specifications, and software ecosystem requirements. Xiaomi can enforce hardware quality, software performance, and after-sales support directly.

70mai dash cams are a 'partner brand',  which is slightly different. They are not owned by Xiaomi, but because they are officially partnered and often sold through Xiaomi channels (Mi Store, Mi Home, or Xiaomi’s online ecosystem), Xiaomi approves them for compatibility, quality standards and ensures the products work well with their ecosystem and don’t damage the brand’s reputation.

Thus: Think of it as a “quality stamp” rather than full ownership 70mai is Xiaomi vetted.

Given the 'risk' of someone (a motorcyclist) pulling out from either side I've always had my dashcams mounted centrally... (behind the rear-view mirror)... But you mentioned a 6" sun-blocking strip, which I assume is opaque and a dash-cam mounted higher up will not be able to see through it.

Thus: If you wanted a dash-cam positioned across to the left hand side (passenger side) you'll need something with horizontal adjustment as some mounts (including 70mai) cams) are only adjustable along the vertical axis.

Thus: obtaining a 3rd party 'suction mount' would be the best option to give you both vertical and horizontal adjustment.

Anything like this:
