Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on Thursday that the Thai army has been authorized to address increasing tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border. This move comes amid reports of Cambodian troops deploying heavy weapons near Kantharalak district in Thailand’s Si Sa Ket province. The Second Army Region is tasked with making decisions to defend Thailand’s sovereignty.

The situation began escalating when the Second Army Region Operations Centre observed the movement of Cambodian military forces on Wednesday. Cambodian troops positioned heavy artillery in a manner suggesting potential military action. Anutin, speaking on Thursday night, confirmed that the army has the autonomy to respond appropriately to these developments.

Amid these rising tensions, Anutin emphasized the government's support for the military's actions and readiness to provide necessary resources. Furthermore, Anutin, who also serves as the interior minister, announced plans to personally assess the situation with a visit to some border areas next week.

Experts note that such military build-ups can lead to significant diplomatic strains between neighboring countries. The situation is being monitored closely by regional analysts, who stress the importance of diplomatic engagement to prevent escalation. Community leaders along the border have expressed concerns over the potential impact on local populations.

Looking forward, Thailand’s primary objective remains to maintain national security while ensuring that diplomatic channels remain open. Anutin’s upcoming visit may also serve as a crucial step in stabilizing the situation and reassuring residents of the government's commitment to peace and security.

Key Takeaways

  • Cambodian troops have mobilized heavy weapons near the Thai border.
  • Prime Minister Anutin has authorized military response by Thailand.
  • Anutin plans to visit affected border areas to assess the situation.

Somehow I think you have very little knowledge about Thailand.

About Time, enough is enough with the Cambodians still laying all those mines after all the negotiations and hurting Thai citizens.

Also enough is enough of Thai aggression with its military and police firing rubber bullets and tear gas hurting Khmer citizens and building illegal rubber tire boundaries wrapped with razor wire on Cambodian soil!

Anutin hasn't 'authorised ' anything. He said the army has autonomy, totally different...

History says they will at some point

Didn't Trump claim credit for stopping this? The man is an idiot.

Official statement from the Thailand 2nd Army Area Operations Center. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1AtXCYWU3v/

Overall Situation At 12:02 hrs on 27 September 2025, Cambodian forces once again attempted to escalate tensions in the Chong Ahn Ma area of Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, by firing war weapons from Hill 677 toward Hill 600 and Hill 527, accompanied by intermittent small-arms fire before the situation subsided. The clash remained confined to this area, but both sides continue to maintain a close military presence.

Later in the afternoon, the Thai side was notified by Cambodia that a Cambodian Interim Observer Team (IOT) would visit the Chong Ahn Ma area. The 2nd Army Area assesses this as an effort by Cambodia to create conditions and provoke an incident timed to coincide with the IOT visit—a tactic repeatedly used by Cambodia in the past and again employed in this instance.

Thai forces also detected that Cambodian personnel had pre-positioned cameras near an operations base south of Chong Ahn Ma, indicating a clear intention to record and disseminate footage internationally to portray Thailand as the aggressor, despite the fact that the provocation originated from the Cambodian side.

The use of weapon fire in broad daylight—offering no tactical advantage—underscores a deliberate attempt to provoke a Thai response. Any retaliation could then be exploited to accuse Thailand of violating the ceasefire agreement and to amplify such claims in international forums.

Despite these provocations, Thailand continues to manage the situation with prudence and restraint, avoiding any action that could benefit Cambodian propaganda. At the same time, the Royal Thai Army reaffirms its readiness to fully defend national sovereignty and security, while ensuring the safety of Thai civilians in the area.

Meanwhile, the 2nd Army Area has deployed Civil Affairs teams to coordinate assistance and provide continuous support to residents along the Thailand–Cambodia border, reassuring the public that the Army will not abandon them and stands ready to protect and assist in all situations.

The 2nd Army Area will continue to closely monitor developments and provide regular updates. The public is urged to exercise discretion when receiving information and to follow only official security agency channels to avoid misunderstandings or the spread of inaccurate news.

Yes, important. In my family's village - and every other one, I guess - 'information' travels at lightening speed, irrespective of its accuracy.

Not an overt military action, just a teaser to get Thailand to over react militarily that makes Thailand the aggressor?

Not if Cambodia began firing first, which is what the Thai army is reporting.
