Historic Phuket Temple Hall Demolished for Safety Reasons

Residents of Phuket's Thalang District are deeply upset after the sudden demolition of Wat Phra Nang Sang's ordination hall, known as the Ubosot. The ancient hall, central to religious activities, was renowned for its murals depicting local history. Though the demolition aimed to prevent danger due to severe structural damage, it has sparked concern over the loss of cultural heritage.

The Ubosot had long been a symbol of Thalang's rich cultural tapestry, drawing communities for rituals and ceremonies. However, a July 15 inspection by the Phuket Provincial Public Works and Town & Country Planning Office revealed severe structural issues. Despite its designation as an ancient site, the deterioration was deemed a safety risk, leading to the abbot ordering its demolition.

The decision caught the Phuket branch of the National Office of Buddhism by surprise, even though it was legally permissible. Wasan Sangsin, NOB Phuket chief, clarified that the temple’s abbot acted within his authority due to the compromised structural integrity caused by rust and water damage. The history-rich site was notably defended by local heroines in the 1785 battle of Thalang, symbolizing local resilience.

Plans are in place to build a new Ubosot on the site, with sacred items carefully relocated. Chalermwut Phimphiyut of the Fine Arts Department confirmed the reconstruction approval but did not specify if permission was granted before the original hall's demolition. Under Thai law, construction on ancient sites requires prior approval, ensuring that heritage and safety standards are maintained.

This development highlights the delicate balance between heritage preservation and public safety. The community feels a significant cultural loss as efforts to rebuild move forward. Meanwhile, a related incident occurred when a prayer hall in Ratchaburi collapsed, underscoring the pressing need for vigilant upkeep of aging structures to prevent accidents.

Key Takeaways

  • The Ubosot at Wat Phra Nang Sang was demolished due to safety risks.
  • Local residents mourn the loss of the site’s historical and cultural significance.
  • A new Ubosot will be constructed, maintaining adherence to safety and heritage standards.
