Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged strict anti-corruption measures as Minister Chaichanok Chidchob investigates a 40-million-baht monthly bribe tied to call centre scams. Anutin, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, fully supports the inquiry, asserting that no corruption will be tolerated within his government. The controversy arose following Chaichanok's revelation of bribe offers from entities linked to call centre operations in exchange for legal leniency.

Chaichanok, a key government figure and son of Bhumjaithai patriarch Newin Chidchob, aims to maintain transparency by establishing an independent fact-finding committee. The committee, to be appointed shortly, will consist of representatives from several agencies, including the Central Investigation Bureau, Department of Special Investigation, and Anti-Money Laundering Office. DES official Patchara Anantasilp will oversee the panel, tasked with delivering its report by late October.

The probe has prompted different reactions, with former Democrat MP Nipit Intarasombat seeking further investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Commission. Nipit criticizes the political response, stating his actions stem from personal conviction as a concerned citizen. Anutin welcomes all calls for transparency, reinforcing the new government's commitment to rooting out any past misconduct.

Looking ahead, the committee's findings are crucial, with potential legal consequences for implicated officials. Chaichanok, committed to ethical governance, emphasizes that no staff will receive preferential treatment if involved in misconduct. The government's resolve indicates a broader focus on cleaning up corruption, with anticipated measures to reinforce integrity in public service.

Key Takeaways

  • A probe into a 40-million-baht bribe linked to call centre scams is underway.
