A British man named Aiden Minnis, 37, has ignited controversy after releasing a video in which he sets his UK passport aflame, claims allegiance to Russia, and declares himself “now Russian.”

Dressed in military fatigues and brandishing a weapon, Minnis rails against the UK, calls his citizenship “revoked,” and waves what he calls a Russian internal ID.

Originally from Wiltshire, Minnis says he’s joined Russian forces in Ukraine, fighting in Donbas and assisting with explosives. He claims his Russian ID will protect him from UK prosecution.

But legal experts note that this document is not valid internationally—and it does not shield him from extradition or criminal charges back in Britain.

Minnis’s family has publicly disowned him, condemning his actions. He is not the only Briton to side with pro-Russian forces abroad: Ben Stimson, a former prisoner convicted under terrorism laws, has similarly taken up arms for Moscow-backed groups.

The UK government has condemned these actions, warning citizens involved in foreign conflicts risk facing investigations and prosecution once back home. Officials state reports of British nationals participating in illegal invasions are “shocking” and reiterate that citizenship withdrawal or threats do not absolve individuals of legal accountability.

Minnis insists he has no intention to return to the UK, saying he is “starting a new life” under Russian allegiance. He describes himself as ready for combat on Russia’s frontlines, believing he is protected by Moscow.

Key Takeaways

Passport burn, allegiance swap: Aiden Minnis publicly destroys his UK passport, declares Russian citizenship, and joins Russian-aligned forces in Ukraine.

No immunity from UK law: His Russian internal ID is invalid internationally and does not prevent prosecution or extradition.

Brits fighting for Moscow: Minnis is one of at least two Britons (alongside Ben Stimson) openly backing Putin’s war; UK officials warn of legal consequences.

Come home Bob. Alls forgiven.

I saw him on a YT podcast about a year ago, believe Col. Daniel Davis's. He was reporting from the frontline then. Extremely articulate and obviously smart from the decision as tp where his allegiance should be.

"Minnis insists he has no intention to return to the UK". Excellent news.

I hope that the UK government revoke his citizenship as he requests, and leave him to rot away in Moscow

The usual British tactics, join the winners when the war is over.

Let's hope that a GoFundMe selfie of the shrapnel wound will go viral

And yet again a Brit asks Russia to fight his war for him.

Things never change.

If he is serious he should renounce his citizenship. In a few years time he will be like the UK nationals who joined ISIS in Iraq and Syria. When things went pear shaped they demanded to be repatriated and served by the UK foreign office.

In many countries, joining armed forces of another country automatically results in losing citizenship. Don't know the UK law here.

Ah Wiltshire - where "Dumb and Dumber" is a medical textbook rather than a comedy!

There is a reason why quite large tracts of that county are used as an artillery range!

Correct

Russian solders have a one month survival rate.

Not really a propaganda win for Putin to attract insane people.
